Mexico's new president offers the migrants traveling in the caravan schooling, housing, and medical care. Along with temporary ID cards and work permits if they stay in Mexico. According to the BBC reporting.

"Today, Mexico extends you its hand," President Peña Nieto said.

But he added: "This plan is only for those who comply with Mexican laws, and it's a first step towards a permanent solution for those who are granted refugee status in Mexico."

The plan envisages:
◾Temporary ID cards and work permits
◾Medical care
◾Schooling for migrants' children
◾Housing in local hostels

And the majority of those "poor" asylum seekers told him: "Up yours!"

"ARRIAGA, Mexico — Several thousand Central American migrants turned down a Mexican offer of benefits if they applied for refugee status and stayed in the country's two southernmost states, vowing to set out before dawn Saturday to continue their long trek toward the U.S. border. ..."

Goes to show how "desperate" those people are .../sarcasm

Now that's sad.

Sad that migrants who are looking for asylum get it from a big country but they refuse it because they want to be in the US, that's not fleeing persecution, that's selectively wanting to be in a different country then their own.
The only reason they still are coming to the US is they know they will be let free into the states and have to come back to for their asylum court hearing which they wont go to and force ICE to come find them. Which everyone knows they don't grab but a very small percentage of. Its a form of illegally crossing the border pure and simple.

If many of them are seeking asylum from Guatemala, then once they're in Mexico, they've got that done. And, if Mexico will support them, great.

It may be great for them but why would they not except it and try to continue to the US border?

Because we're going to turn them around, I hope. The Mexican government seems to, according to the BBC anyway, be offering them a safe place to live and a work permit to support themselves and their families. Why would they not want to stay there?

The argument is that most are seeking asylum for a safe life. If Mexico offers that to them, then that should be enough.

However, if they are actually economic migrants, and not seeking asylum from life threatening danger, then they need to get in line and follow US law regarding immigration rather than trying to come here illegally.

And watch the outrage from lefty MSM and lefty congressmen when they get to the border. And watch them actually get in to wait for their court hearing which only 18% ever go to.

Mexico has just as much violence as many of these smaller Central American states. "Asylum" in Mexico is like going from the fire into the frying pan--- its better than where you were, but not by a whole lot.

I read, just yesterday, that less less than 2% actually show back up for their hearing after they have been released in the "catch and release" program. Either way, 18% or 2%, releasing them into the country should never happen.

Of course the Democrats and many in the media will complain. Many of them are for open borders, and are looking at these folks as more Democratic votes.

Hell, in at least one California town, there are illegal immigrants that have been elected to the damned city council: In a first for California, immigrants here illegally get seats in city government - Los Angeles Times

Not really. Mexico is like Chicago - your home town. Certain parts are damned dangerous and deadly, others are just fine and very safe. In that train of thought, if they can't stay in Mexico, they sure can't be in Chicago either.

A small correction: Pena Nieto isn't Mexico's new President. He's the current President who will leave Dec. 1.

Anyway, I'm thinking the majority of those migrants will be taking Mexico up on their offer after they are stopped from entering the US.

Good for Mexico, as this could resolve the problem for some or many of the migrants. They are still eligible to apply for asylum in the US, but the offer fits the notion I refugee work of "burden sharing," where nations cooperate in these situations.

That the current president leaves office soon could be problematic if they can't get the new guy to honor the commitment.

International law says that asylum seakers must go to the nearest safe country. In this case, that's Mexico.

If they refuse Mexico's offer of asylum, they're no longer asylum seekers.

US law supercedes International law...and Mexico is not a country we have a safe third country treaty with....our law does not require they settle in another country before applying for asylum in the US.

In actuality can be more dangerous...just having an accent that isn't Mexican in Mexico makes you a target of the cartel.

Are you saying this is true of CA collectively? Half the kids in (all of ) CA have an immigrant parent?

Yes that is what that report shows. And people think of migrationpolicy.org to be more liberal then the other big named group cis.org

Mexican education?

Isn't that an oxymoron?

Anyway, American free stuff is more to be desired than Mejican free stuff.

Duely noted earlier, thank you

He also cannot unilaterly welcome them without his Congress agreeing...he can say lots of stuff....Congress has to agree...so does the incoming president...he is a lame duck.
If he does that...great...but he doesn't do it for his own people...he also will have to offer them personal protection from being kidnapped by cartels until they speak like Mexicans and look Mexican.

The international law that requires The United States to consider their application for asylum, however, does require asylum seakers to apply in the nearest safe country.
