Some of the people inside the compound and with the best vantage point to know think the government started the fire. Regardless the attack on the compound was a gross abuse of power and led to the deaths of small children and women. Koresh could have easily been arrested in town on one of his frequent tips to town. Pulling up in front of the compound with a cattle trailer full of AFT agents was just plain stupid. Its entirely possible the surviving Davidians are lying but its also possible the government is lying to protect their asses and careers.
Ah, so we are supposed to take the word of cultists----in other words, the people who A) weren't capable of seeing David Koresh for who he really was in the first place and B) really would have a number of reasons to try and blame the government rather than accept that their precious cult was responsible.
Yes, the cultists' own stupidity did lead to the deaths of many of their own people, but there was no "abuse of power" involved in enforcing the law.
Could things have been handled better? Certainly. But they weren't, the right turned a colossal scumbag and his followers into martyrs, and then a hundred plus more people die when a far right thug decided Koresh's cultists need to be "avenged".
