Georgia officials removed an estimated 107,000 people from voter rolls because they decided not to vote in prior elections, according to a new report.

An APM Reports analysis found the voters were removed under the state's "use it or lose it" law, which starts a process for removing people from voter rolls if they fail to vote, respond to a notice or make contact with election officials over a three-year period.

After that three-year span, those who don't vote or make contact with authorities in two elections can be purged from the voter rolls under the Georgia law.

Such laws, generally enacted by GOP governments, have been growing more common, with at least nine states now having them, according to APM Reports.

The GOP does not want Democracy, they will do everything they can to stop the will of the people. They want to target new voters who are disgusted with Republicans and may be voting for the first time.

While there may be a partisan intent here, I think it is a reasonable law. I believe the election authorities will allow anyone so affected to re-apply to become registered.

The alternative is to allow anyone to vote at any polling station. That is not reasonable.

Remind me who is trying to get non-citizens to vote? Oh that is right it's the democrats.
Playing the Democracy card.... Beyond hysterical!

What does your belief that people are trying to get non-citizens to vote have to do with removing removing people's right to vote?

You have a point, but if the partisan intent is real (and I believe it is), there are many who will have to reapply every cycle, and may be purged even after that application.

If you aren't listed, no picture of your re-app on you cell phone of anything else will get you a vote. There is a point at which this is reasonable, say someone who hasn't voted in 8 years, but regardless, the gubment needs to show that they are purging right wing areas in exactly the same manner.

How is this law targeting new voters?

It's really a pretty reasonable plan. It gets dead people and people who have succumbed to dementia off the voter rolls. It gets people who moved off voter rolls. It prevents ballots from going to people who may not be the intended recipient or who are incapable of making conscious choices.

A few years back my grandmother, who suffered dementia, was in a memory care facility. The majority of the residents couldn't reasonably choose what to wear in the morning much less make an informed decision regarding who to vote for. A "voter's advocacy" group came into the facility and "helped" all these people fill out their ballots. That didn't really serve the residents at all. It served the political party these "voter advocates" chose to support.

They are not removing their right to vote. If they wish to vote they can simply go register again.
they still have their right to vote.

How do you know they’ll have the time and opportunity to vote again? Has everybody shared their personal calendars with you?

most states have online voting registration. they can easily do it on their phone, tablet or computer.
they don't have to leave the comfort of their own home.

if they don't have the time to vote then well that is their thing.

I have to go out of town before the election this year. I went and requested a mail in ballot i just sent it off the other day.
you can also request those online as well. it takes off of like 5 minutes to do both.

your excuses are just that. The chances of someone voting who hasn't voted in 3 years or more is slim anyway.
however they can still re-register there is nothing wrong with that.

“That’s there thing.” So you were being deceptive when you said they would have the time and opportunity to vote.

BOTTOM LINE: The leftwingers support voter fraud.

What does your belief that people are trying to get non-citizens to vote have to do with removing removing people's right to vote?

No one lost their right to vote because of this law. They're all free to register.

I was curious if this was a new issue so went and took a look at the voter database purging to see what was behind this process. From research it seems several states do this same thing (voter roll purging/"use it or lose it") and it has been going on for decades. For example, Ohio:

"In Ohio, the Secretary of State sent out this form warning voters who have not cast ballots in two years to confirm their eligibility or risk having their voting registrations canceled. The practice has been state law under Democrats and Republicans for more than 20 years."

"Six other states — Alaska, Montana, South Dakota, Tennessee, Georgia, and West Virginia — also consider voter inactivity when striking names from lists of registered voters."

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/inside-ohios-fight-voting-rules

So for me, based on that process, had I lived in those states, I likely would have been dropped from the voter roll and required to re-register. I think it's crappy they may do it without proper notification to a voter that they are about to become purged and/or need to register again. If I had turned up to vote after living overseas for a few years I would have been surprised. Also, there was one POTUS election I sat out of (didn't like any candidate) and might have been purged after that.

I think this one will (should) be taken up by the ACLU as a case (for Georgia and the remaining states that do it) and a better notification process needs to be implemented.

The law does not target new voters. It removes those who haven't voted in awhile IE not new voters.

Getting people removed from the voter rules because they have not voted in years or responded to notices does not mean that their Right to Vote is being removed. Anyone that does this may re-register to vote. Even if they show up to the voting booths ON voting day without first registering to vote, they can still vote. Your claim is disingenuous at best.

Neither party wants Democracy, both want to remain in power forever. If the democrats accepted democracy and election results they wouldn't have begin trying to destroy Trump the day after the election.

Each party wants to destroy the other even if that destruction includes this nation and its democracy. The problem here in Georgia is both parties nominated wackos, Extremist. One from the left and one from the right. It's deja vu all over again of the 2016 election where each party nominate a candidate 60% of American didn't want to become their next president. That 60% was made up of different people, but basically 25% who didn't want and disliked both candidates along with another 35% added to that 25% who didn't want Trump, but Clinton and another 35% who wanted Trump, but wanted Clinton.

Far as I'm concerned, our two major parties have become made up of extremist morons who only goal is to force either the lefts or the rights extremist views upon the people of this country. No wonder both major parties are shrinking fast. Why more and more folks are deserting them. From 2006 independents have risen from 30% to 43% as more and more have left the two major parties.

The problem is the two major parties still retain all the power in our two party system. I don't think either cares if they shrink to just 10%, as long as they maintain all that power.

That isn't the government's fault.

How do you feel about requiring people with firearms to supply certifications for newly performed Federal and State background checks? The certificates would need to be less than a week old before election day in order to mitigate the chances that illegal aliens forged them so they could vote in the election. The newly performed checks would also have the bonus of catching felons like MS-13 members with warrants for their arrest as well as finding and deporting illegal aliens before they even reached the polling stations.

That isn't the government's fault.

Why don’t the Dems have an army of lawyers dragging these officials into federal court? They have the dough. They should be suing in every state with a hint of voter suppression. Secure injunctions on these purges and let the states work their laws out AFTER the elections. This last-minute bull**** can only have one motivation: removing people’s registration while they may no longer have the time or ability to rectify it. And the fact that the Secretary of State who’s running for governor is overseeing this is a travesty.

Because Democrats have less a leg to stand on since the Supreme Court struck down anti-discriminatory voting laws in 2012. And even if that didn't happen, we now have a DOJ headed up by someone who supports these discriminatory laws anyway.

Plus, even if neither were true, Republicans need only enact such measures as to inconvenience enough people long enough to steal the election. Even if Democrats successfully challenged each of these voting suppression measure, the measures need only happen close enough to the election to make an impact. No court challenges would retroactively change the outcomes of an election that was stolen.

Mr. Trump stated that 3m Americans voted illegally in the last election, which implied they didn't vote for him. He has been in office for two years and has not started any investigation to this regard.

As a former political party worker in Canada, I came to the realization that maintaining a 100% accurate voters' list is impossible. We should be happy with 95%. But that 5% can cause some discredit to the electoral system. So I think both Mr. Trump and his enemies were trying to bend that 5% to portray unfairness to their side.

As I understand the American system, both D's and R's are appointed to these electoral commissions. If there are deliberate attempts to keep D voters off the list, the D's on those commissions are the ones to blame, not the R's. All these squabbles should be settled months and weeks before the election. It is impractical to settle them on election day. If they remain unsettled after the election, then the D's on those commission need to make their case to the media and court system that the R's were cheating. But from this side of the border, I hear only complaining and not seeing much action to fix the problem---from both sides.

The again, secure injunctions from lower courts. There are bound to be sympathetic judges. Doubtful any of this makes its way to the high court between now and Election Day. You don’t just sit on your hands and complain to the press.
