Trump threatens to send military to southern border with Mexico

President Donald Trump on Thursday said he would deploy the U.S. military and close the southern border if Mexico did not move to halt large groups of migrants headed for the United States from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.

"I must, in the strongest of terms, ask Mexico to stop this onslaught — and if unable to do so I will call up the U.S. Military and CLOSE OUR SOUTHERN BORDER!" Trump wrote on Twitter.

Trump threatened to withhold regional aid as a caravan with several thousand Honduran migrants journeyed this week through Guatemala to Mexico in hopes of crossing the U.S.-Mexico border and escaping endemic violence and poverty in Central America.

COMMENT:-

Since those troops will "... not perform law enforcement duties or have contact with migrants at the border.", exactly what will they be doing?

Please note that I'm not in the least questioning Mr. Trump's right to "deploy American troops to bolster America's national security", I'm just asking "WTF difference does he think that this is going to make unless the ROE get changed to allow the troops to shoot on sight?".

PS - Mr. Trump is also making noises about abrogating the terms of NAFTA 2.0 even before it has been formally adopted - or even afterwards if the Mexicans don't do - in Mexico (regardless of what the laws of Mexico are) - what they are told to do by the President of the United States of America. This, of course, is going to bolster the degree of confidence that the Mexican government has that the US government will actually abide by NAFTA 2.0.

This is all just for show to his base. There isn’t a whole lot the military can do except for surveillance and even that is limited.

He can literally shut the border down. I hope he does if the migrant invaders are not stopped by either the countries of origin or Mexico. Shut it down to any crossing of any kind. Do that for a awhile, and the Cartels will take care of the problem for us. I wouldn't want to be a migrant then.
 
What about the new strain of dangerous and untreatable polio that travels worth these people?

Of course that would make it highly unlikely that NAFTA 2.0 will get approved by the Mexicans.

After all why would they bother to sign a treaty with the US that the US government has already indicated that it will ignore whenever it feels like it?
 
As long as they are there to actually help arrest and detain illegal crossers then I have no problem with the military on the border. But if its this bull**** that Bush or Obama did of only having the military on the border to notify border guard of illegal crossing with no authority to arrest or detain illegal crossers then I don't support that. There are people who already do that **** for free.
 
These people really expect Trump to just let them in?

Someone should inform them that America has a new sheriff, and he's established a Zero Tolerance policy on illegals.

The military are armed, they could actually shoot at the immigrants, after all, crossing the border without following custom procedure could be accurately described as a threat to national security.

Seriously? With all that wall crap? Trump has no interest in stopping illegal immigration. The people who's opinions he values have no interest in stopping illegal immigtion. They make big bucks off cheap labour, cheap labour that entered the country legally. Google it, see how many legal crossings happen each day at San Ysidro alone. Tens of thousands. At one crossing. And Trump has all his pet trumpanzees stomping and cheering their 'new sheriff' at the prospect of a wall snaking across hills and valleys for hundreds of empty miles.

They made their choice. The consequences are on them. By law they can seek asylum in Mexico. As far as I am concerned Trump closing the border is the correct choice to defend our sovereignty.

Most illegal immigrants cross the border legally, at customs crossings. They're going shopping, or visiting friends or family, or on a holiday. And then they just stay.
But hey, if the thought that Trump will stop a few from wading the river floats your boat, enjoy.
