U.S. to require drug companies to include prices in their ads

Of course not. Drug companies do not retail drugs. Retailers sell drugs. Drug companies have no power over what retailers sell their drugs for, anymore than a manufacturer has no power over what their products are retailed for.

Actually manufacturer's have a lot of power over the price charged in its distribution channel, beginning with they get to decide who is in the distribution channel. The usually control the MSRP and hold the channel to use it as a boogey.

I find it rather ironic that the generation that grew up on "don't do drugs" is now in the role of being a drug pusher ("ask your doctor aboutr...") over our "airwaves"

You'd be right to be skeptical about drug company's R&D bullcrap talk.

The Make-Believe Billion
How drug companies exaggerate research costs to justify absurd profits.

As posted by another poster.

Agreed Regardless if they do or they dont charge legitimately..... seeing it through transparency will allow us to make a better valuation more so judgments to lawmakers. That scumbag Scirelli guy.... what a scumbag.... but Is there any context that the exprimental drug cost his company made was justified...(likely not) but maybe to a certain point? AT least we the PUBLIC could know?

Personally, I feel this is a fail by the Trump administration.

Why? I don't think drug companies should be advertising on television at all. Much like was done to the cigarette industry, I think the Drug Companies should be prohibited from public advertising like they do. The drug companies are creating an artificial product demand for a public that is already pill crazy. The drug companies already rip us off, why encourage more of it via their advertising?

U.S. to require drug companies to include prices in their ads
Drug companies had offered to point consumers to websites that listed prices

Drug companies will have to give list prices for their products in television ads under a new proposal the Trump administration released Monday.

The new rule, which is open for discussion, would affect any drug covered by Medicare or Medicaid.

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar announced the new proposal just hours after the lobby group that represents big drug companies said its members would start indirectly mentioning prices in their television ads.

...and to your point, of which I agree.....

Doctors hate it when a patient comes in and asks for a specific drug they saw on TV.
Why does Big Pharma advertise to us in the first place?
Doctors hate it when patients ask for drugs they saw on TV.

AS A SIDE NOTE:
I found out why Big Pharma absolutely hates the Kratom I use for my chronic pain.
I found out you can not patent a plant.
Kratom is merely smushed up leaves of the Mitragyna Speciosa plant, of which they can not patent.
This is why they want it banned by the government officials they bribed and have in their hip pocket.

So, knowing that, last night I ordered a plant to place out in the jungle behind the house when the weather gets warmer.
Indoors until then.
This way even if they get it banned I will have a supply. It does not take much and has no side effects (in my case).

You don't want to know the price? Holy crap, do I ever have a used car to sell you...... LOL.

No, I want them to be banned from advertising (period). Btw, they can quote a market price here in USA that has no reflection on the price they sell a drug for in other markets.

Case and point: A prescription of Vimpat is $900.00 bucks in USA, $40.00 for the exact same drug in the same package in Mexico. Do you think the drug companies will tell you that?

These drugs shouldn't even be allowed to be advertised to people to begin with. Don't really think this will change much though.

If doctors, hospitals, etc, were allowed to negotiate prices for drugs from other countries, big pharma would bring their prices down. But they aren't. Too many congress critters receive campaign cash from big pharma, and that's a big part of the problem.

We are subsidizing other countries medicine because our government (those donation bloated politicians) allow big pharma to rip us off because they know they can get away with it.

That needs to stop.

There shouldn't be ads in the first place. Pharmaceuticals are supposed to be restricted medicines, not products. People shouldn't be going to their doctors and asking for a drug. It should be prescribed because it's the best fit for the situation.

Of course, doctors are all being paid off now. If you live in the U.S. you should look up your doctor here to see if they're getting big pharma kick backs.

I worked in pharma sales for about five years. I can tell you from personal experience that direct-to-consumer advertising works very well. It drives drugs sales. When my company started advertising on TV in my territory, my monthly prescriptions doubled and the number of doctors who were prescribing increased by almost as much.

Having said that, I am against D2C advertising. Patients simply do not know enough and it interferes with the patient/doctor relationship.

75% of US consumed prescription drugs are produced in the US, so its not like its an import ban that is causing the price differences. Clearly the Pharma co's are simply selling their products based on what the market will pay, which is quite typical for any product.

Lots of manufactures of other products advertise prices as MSRP, which is what I imagine this will involve.

I can see it now:

Get $1,800 off MSRP on the new 2018 gottahavit pill! Hurry, as we need to clear out the 2018 to make room for the new 2019 model!

Warning: Gottahavit pills have been known to cause baldness, itchy crotch, and, in extreme cases, deciduous dick syndrome, but shouldn't you ask your doctor?
