Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating what local officials are describing as a mass casualty incident after a limo speeded down a hill and crashed into bystanders at the Apple Barrel Country Store around 1:55 p.m. Saturday.

It is not clear how many of the victims were in the vehicles that crashed at the intersections of Route 30 and Route 30A and how many were bystanders. The Apple Barrel's parking lot was filled with people and parked cars at the time of the crash.
Reports are the Limo had a wedding party in it.

20 dead, confirmed.

Schenectady.........where everyone who’s anybody goes about drunk, and everybody else is trying to catch up.

Thoughts and prayers.

Terrible news. I used to live in Schoharie County. Held the distinction of being the most economically depressed county in all of NY state. Literally the poorest county in the state.

I grew up in Schenectady and those country stores can be really crowded on the weekends. What a mess.

Reports are the limo was speeding- yes,a terrible day, dozens of families impacted from what appears to be a preventable tragedy

That is sick. Really sick

Waitll they show the results of the investigation. Alcohol will be a major contributing factor.

Yeah. In those areas speed can be a real problem. The roads are mostly tree lined which cuts down visibility, there's hardly a straight stretch anywhere and deer, raccoons, skunks and all other manner of critter can be around every bend. On top of that, stores like what they describe tend to be at intersections or a well known bend. This time of year they'll be packed on the weekends with cars lined up and down the street, kids playing around and parents that are often more focused on produce than traffic.

Appears 18 dead in the Limo which was carrying the wedding party, 2 bystanders.

SCHOHARIE, N.Y. — A crash involving a limousine at an upstate New York tourist spot killed 20 people, officials said Sunday.

A person with knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press that 18 of the victims were in the limo and two were bystanders. The person was not authorized to discuss the preliminary information publicly and spoke Sunday on the condition of anonymity.

Wow. From the pics, it just plowed straight through that corner.

I can't imagine being called to respond to a scene that tragic.

I can understand bystanders being struck and killed but the report says 18 of the 20 deaths were limo riders.

How did it manage to kill 18 passengers unless it rammed into something and rolled.

Are these limos even safe?

Well, they aren’t as safe as a regular car if you are in a crash. I have been in a few, though not with that many people, and most people are sitting sideways and there are no seatbelts. The passengers would have become projectiles, slamming into each other. My guess is the driver was either inexperienced or under the influence.

I doubt the limo passengers were wearing seatbelts.

Or a mechanical failure.

True. Malfunctioning breaks is a possibility. We should know fairly soon if that is the case.

I thought I heard that the limo was going down a hill? Do you recall that?

Worst traffic accident in the US since 2009.

“Twenty fatalities is just horrific,” NTSB chairman Robert Sumwalt told reporters Sunday. “This is the most deadly transportation accident in this country since February of 2009.”

Google Earth shows this to be a T intersection.

Police said that just before 2 p.m. Saturday, they received reports of an accident involving two vehicles: A 2001 Ford Excursion limousine traveling southwest on State Route 30 “failed to stop” at the intersection and flew into the parking lot of the nearby Apple Barrel Country Store and Cafe.

The limousine struck a 2015 Toyota Highlander that was unoccupied in the parking lot, New York State Police first deputy superintendent Christopher Fiore said at a news conference Sunday. Two pedestrians standing nearby were also struck and killed, Fiore added.

Apparently everyone in the limo was killed; 18 people. That thing must have been flying.

With that death rate you would expect a very high rate of speed was involved.

Or did it intentionally.

He was going at least 60 mph, according to witnesses.

Is it just me or are these "People acting stupid and people die" stories getting more common?

Last week it was selfie takers falling off cliffs to their death.
