New York Times investigation: Trump helped his parents evade taxes

Right. I attempt to evade paying as much tax as I can. I look for all the loopholes.
This isn't news nor is it criminality on Trump's part.

Tax avoidance, using legal loopholes is permissible. Tax evasion is criminal.

New York Times investigation: Trump helped his parents evade taxes, 'including instances of outright fraud'

President Donald Trump helped "his parents dodge taxes," according to an analysis Tuesday from The New York Times, including what the paper calls "instances of outright fraud." Trump received today's equivalent of at least $413 million from his father and much of that money came from schemes to help his parents evade paying taxes on the fortune his father amassed in a 40-year career, according to the report.

The Times' report claims that Trump and his siblings hid millions of dollars in gifts in what the Times describes as a "sham corporation." The story is based on a months-long investigation that involved reviewing more than 100,000 pages of financial documents, interviews with Trump's father's business associates and documents from "public sources -- mortgages and deeds, probate records, financial disclosure reports, regulatory records and civil court files."

Wonder if trump will try to cut the IRS b[udget now? Oh... too late.

Another bombshell from the NY TIMES, eh? Wonder how long it will be until they walk it, or portions thereof, back?

On the contrary, the article said such thing:

To translate for the normally not ignorant, $200,000 in today's dollars was $18,850 in 1949 dollars. He most definitely was not a millionaire at that pace.

Yes. You could also be alluding to the fact some of that million could be hard to liquidate...and how many 8-year-olds can get loans especially if (and I'm guessing) most of toddler-Trump's money went into a trust?

I'm not alluding to anything. Even the reference to the equivalent of $1 million a year after graduation (1968?) would only be about $140k. Still not a millionaire.

Is your point to ignore the facts and pay attention to your theme? The article says no such thing that he was a millionaire by the age of 8, that you just made up.

As for what the article did say: "He began earning money from his father when he was a toddler, and after college graduation his father gave him the equivalent of $1 million a year."

Which figure would you, or young Donald prefer. $1 million a year, or the equivalent of $1 million a year?

https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-tax-fraud-fred-inheritance-millionaire-by-age-8-2018-10

Trump was reportedly earning $200,000 in today's dollars by the time he was 3 years old. And he was a millionaire by age 8.

Another bombshell from the NY TIMES, eh? Wonder how long it will be until they walk it, or portions thereof, back?
What makes you think they need to walk any of it back? They have tens of thousands of documents -- more than any other story that they have ever run, to write this story.

Do you really think they would run such a momentous story without assuring they got the facts straight?

The more relevant question is when will Trump cultists realize that they have been worshiping a false god for three years?

You guys just stay focused on trying to bring him down, any way possible. I know you'll get there (not!). In the meantime, we'll go forward with all the jobs, great economy, foreign policy, etc... Hey, did you hear, he made a deal with Canada? Not as important to the left as listening to a porn lawyer's latest burp and such, but there are other things going on.

It's coming eventually and when it does, all you brainwashed minions owe us a great, big, loud apology for enabling a criminal to destroy this country that our brave men and women have died for. Their deaths are now on your conscience because they never mattered to you, the only thing that mattered was your tribalism and unfailing allegiance to a lowdown, crooked, dirty, immoral, common NY crook. And, you all fell for it because your minds are putty that he squished with his words and made you filled with hatred. In the end, you're going to lose because you're on the wrong side of morality here.

Show us laws broken, actual illegal behavior... otherwise, this is more of the same BS, different chapter, same book...

It's outlined in the article in detail. Read it for your answers.

Trumpet are fine in ignoring half a billion in unpaid tax and prefer to use man power to go after the dreaded welfare recipient.
From my local paper today, "Colbert was arrested on Aug. 23 and faces misdemeanor charges of fifth-degree welfare fraud, petit larceny and misuse of food stamps. He’s accused of stealing $468 in public assistance benefits while he had $4,388.70 in his bank account, authorities said."

My God, what is wrong with people?

Your post reminds me of the story of Lord Beaverbrook, a powerful Canadian-British media magnate, and a visiting American actress. In a game of hypothetical questions, Beaverbrook asked the lady: ‘Would you live with a stranger if he paid you one million pounds?’ She said she would. ‘And if be paid you five pounds?’ The irate lady fumed: ‘Five pounds. What do you think I am?’ Beaverbrook replied: ‘We’ve already established that. Now we are trying to determine the degree.”

$18,000 is about what high-level executives earned in 1949. For an infant to be receiving that compensation is ridiculous. The actual numbers are really not relevant to the event. Trump Senior funneled money into the hands of his infant son and most likely deducted it from his corporate taxes. Whether that was legal or not is up to tax experts. Quibbling about whether he was a millionaire or not isn't really the crux of the outrage.

Perhaps Trump should order the FBI to investigate.:lamo

What's outlined is tax reduction, some of it by his parents, how do you hold a kid responsible for their parents actions? Oh they are a Republican...

It's easy to tell which people didn't bother to read any of the article. It is long, but the NYT has a bullet pointed story out there if you need something shorter.

You're right--leaders telling lies in this country is standard fare. Probably other countries too.

Men like Brennan, Clapper and Bush receive commendations for their lies.

Interesting. Who could have seen the "everyone does it" defense coming?

Colbert is not the president of the United States so nobody gives 2 cents about Colbert. Trump is a criminal and so are all the spawn of this creepy disgusting sleazebag mob boss. I've grown up knowing about Trump and other criminal types in NY like John Gotti, Sammy Gravano, Sam Giancana....they're all the same. Arrogant and defiant of the law. But one by one they got taken down and they're gone. There'll be many more like Trump but none of them will ever win the White House again, never. Once Trump and his disgusting, lowdown shape-shifting lizard cabinet is purged from Washington, maybe we can start to rebuilt this republic, but at this point I'm not counting on it. Trump has taken this country down so low that it may not be salvageable anymore.

I'm relieved you agree that Trump was not a millionaire. If either Trump broke the tax laws, then punish them according to the law. If there is only you being offended, I'm comfortable with that.

Great. No one cares.

Trump was, of course, reliant on daddy's money from the day he was born until the day Fred died, and afterward. He's a spoiled rich kid who was born on home plate, but pretends he made it all on his own, when the facts show he repeatedly failed as a developer and would have been wiped out repeatedly without daddy stepping in to bail him out. Along the way, the Trump family's fortunes were greatly helped by engaging in rampant and obvious tax fraud, that continued once again at least until Fred (daddy) died in 2000. Further evidence of Trump's failures as a developer is the family was forced to liquidate the empire Fred built within 3 years of his death because Donald needed the money to pay off his creditors.

These maneuvers met with little resistance from the Internal Revenue Service, The Times found. The president’s parents, Fred and Mary Trump, transferred well over $1 billion in wealth to their children, which could have produced a tax bill of at least $550 million under the 55 percent tax rate then imposed on gifts and inheritances.

Im ok with this. The estate tax is immoral, so most anything people can do to avoid the IRS taking your property when you die is right, so long as it doesnt directly harm others.

What's outlined is tax reduction, some of it by his parents, how do you hold a kid responsible for their parents actions? Oh they are a Republican...

No, that's not what was outlined. Yes, some of it was by his parents, much of it was with Trump and his siblings as willing accomplices, and which strategies were arrived at with DJT sitting at the table with tax advisors and others devising ways to cheat the Feds out of taxes. The All County Building Supply and Maintenance arrangement was a decade long scam, for example, as was Fred selling his share in one building worth $millions to Donald for $10,000.

If you didn't bother reading it that's OK, but you shouldn't make claims that are obviously untrue for those of us who did read it.

Unfortunately the law doesn't give a damn whether or not you think it is immoral or not. What is also a bit troubling is our POTUS doesn't respect the laws he swore to uphold or believe they should apply to him - just little people. Much smaller amounts of tax fraud land little people in prison, not to mention drug laws, etc.

I don't know how we can blame a toddler, soon to grow up to be a "self-made man," for getting a 200k annual salary.

Clearly you do.

Of course, that's only the opening paragraph in a pages long story, much of it involving Trump as an adult and therefore presumably knowingly engaging in outright tax fraud.

But even on that narrow, really irrelevant point - no, we can't blame the toddler for being a spoiled rich kid who lived his entire life suckling on daddy's financial teat. What we can do is point out the myth that Donald presents of himself as 'self made man' (except for that little $1 million in working capital to get started....) is a lie. Just as one example, when his casino was in danger of being taken over by regulators, daddy bought $3.5 million in casino chips to allow DJT to make a loan payment, not disclosed of course was where that windfall came from until later.
