Wouldn't it be more appropriate to say the Union went to war to end slavery? Technically speaking the Confederates were defending their land and way of life (obviously slavery was a part of that).

For the record, I 100% agree slavery was an evil practice that needed to be abolished. Just curious as to the wording of your post.

The only thing I can say in response to that is that I realize I'm thankful to have a degree of control over my emotions. Life must be difficult for those whose emotions dictate their thoughts and actions.

But the specific part of the "southern way of life" that they were trying to defend was the practice of slavery. They made that very clear in the writings of the time, even though later generations would seek to "revise" that.

After all, that was their whole objection to Lincoln---they were terrified he was going to end slavery.

That is the reason for my wording.

If you really thought both sides were bad, you would be happy that at least some of the bad guys on one side have been arrested.The fact that you are eager to to quickly tell us there are "communists" on the other side tells us clearly where your sympathies lie. You are no objective observer. Would you be so eager to tell us about how bad the Nazis are if some of the Antifa protestors had been arrested?

The two sides are clearly not the same for you. Both sides are not "the same garbage" to you, clearly. That's fine. But don't try to paint yourself as some objective observer. You have your side picked. It's transparent.

I'm not disputing that. When you say the Confederacy went to war to protect slavery, it implies they were the aggressor. They simply wanted to keep living as they had been and the Union (imo, correctly) said no that wasn't happening and went in to force compliance.

Not everyone that supports civil war monuments are white supremacists either. Having said that, once people start marching down the street saying Jews will not replace them, it would be a good moment to disassociate yourself from that crowd.
