Kim agrees to dismantle main nuke site if US takes steps too

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) — The leaders of North and South Korea announced a wide range of agreements Wednesday which they said were a major step toward peace on the Korean Peninsula. But the premier pledge on denuclearization contained a big condition, with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un stating he’d permanently dismantle his main nuclear complex only if the United States takes unspecified corresponding measures.

Compared to the vague language of their two summits earlier this year, Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in agreed in their second day of meetings to an ambitious program meant to tackle soaring tensions last year that had many fearing war as the North tested a string of increasingly powerful weapons.

Kim promised to accept international inspectors to monitor the closing of a key missile test site and launch pad and to visit Seoul soon, and both leaders vowed to work together to try to host the Summer Olympics in 2032.

But while containing several tantalizing offers, their joint statement appeared to fall short of the major steps many in Washington have been looking for — such as a commitment by Kim to provide a list of North Korea’s nuclear facilities, a solid step-by-step timeline for closing them down, or an agreement to allow international inspectors to assess progress or discover violations.

It also was unclear what “corresponding steps” North Korea wants from the U.S. to dismantle its nuclear site.

COMMENT:-

A truly suspicious person might conclude that this "agreement" is purposefully vague so that the two Koreas can set conditions that Mr. Trump has no choice but to reject in order to take the position "Well, if the government of the United States of America doesn't want to go along with Korea resolving Korean problems in ways that are acceptable and beneficial to Koreans, then we are simply going to have to do it without the involvement of the United States of America. We'll start with this joint declaration '[1] The hostilities between the ROK and DPRK have stopped; [2] The DPRK has withdrawn its armed forces to the 38th parallel; and [3] the ROK does not require Member States to render every assistance to the United Nations in the execution of this resolution as UNSC Resolution has been fully executed.'.".

For further reading "North Korea agrees at summit to shutter test site, major nuclear facility" with its "... Moon and Kim signed the joint declaration that included steps to end military hostility between the two Koreas, plans to continue inter-Korean exchanges and an invitation to Kim to visit Seoul in the near future. ..." might be of interest. Mr. Trump's "tweet" appears to be along the lines of "They have agreed to deliver the pianos and then talk to us about whether or not we'll pay them for them." which, I suspect, isn't quite what was agreed to.

*president trump is the first president in decades to sit down with north korea to try and hash out problems*
*liberals outraged*

In other words, he will retain his nukes and missiles and we give up a bunch of somethings, pass on the crap deal.

Trump accomplished nothing with NK, no outrage required.

It's always about sticking it to the libs with you, isn't it?
You couldn't care less about the substance of the story, except as it might pertain to an angle which you can use to stick it to the libs.

It's kind of hard for us to pretend to have the moral high ground on telling people not to have nukes when we've got more than the rest of the world combined, are the only ones who have used them to kill people (hundreds of thousands of civilians), and have a president saying we should be actively building bigger and better nukes. Why the hell should anyone listen to us if we do the exact opposite of what we preach?

In my opinion, the US should underwrite a Reunification Line of Credit, with the World Bank.

your temper tantrum is noted.

Which means the ball is now in our court.

This is just another ruse by Kim, as he knows that the we're not going to concede much, if anything at all, which will enable him to make us look unreasonable before the international community, and he can convince China and the South to cut us out of further talks.

Of course, this clown car of a WH and it's sycophants and fanboys are too ignorant to understand this.

Even if the ball is in our court, am sure he knows pretty well that whatever agreement they came to in Singapore, they had to have made it clear to him at that time that complete denuclearization had to be done before we fulfill our end of the bargain. But now with the recent news, one can only guess he is either trying to see if there would either be a bit of leniency or testing if the US is trustworthy.

Republican voters truly are just children with drivers licences and voter ID cards at this point.

All they know is "NAH, NAH, NAH, BOO BOO, LIBERULZ!" and incoherent rally cries and slogans about how they're the "real America!". Even as they bitch and whine that their farms are going belly-up because of tariffs, and their health care is being taken away, all they can do is rage vote as a proverbial elevator fart to repulse the rest of us.

They are the best argument any dictator could use against self government.

I don't really care if we have the moral high ground or not, not on this anyway.
And if we never use those weapons again, also fine with me as well.

But other nations getting them? Like North Korea? Nope, not fine with that, and again, I don't care about any moral high ground.

Much of the world does, especially the one's we're telling not to make them. If America wants a nuclear weapon free world, it can lead that effort, but it doesn't, it wants sole ownership of nuclear weapons for purely selfish power purposes, I.E. the same reason everyone else wants them. Nukes are literally the only thing keeping America from invading NK and taking out Kim. He has no reason whatsoever to give them up. Remember how well it went with Gaddafi? America's word means nothing.

Understood.
I still sleep better knowing Kim doesn't have them, even though I know there's no way he could ever use them and live to tell about it.
