Senate passes massive defense and health spending bill, tries to delay border wall fight to after midterms

The Senate on Tuesday passed a short-term spending bill that would keep the government running through Dec. 7, aiming to avert a government shutdown and put off a fight over funding for President Trump’s border wall until after the midterm elections.

The short-term bill came attached to a massive budget package containing full-year 2019 funding for the Pentagon as well as for the Labor, Education and Health and Human Services departments. GOP leaders designed the package to combine key Republican and Democratic priorities in an attempt to garner overwhelming bipartisan support. The package also aims to satisfy Trump’s desire for more military spending.

The 93-to-7 vote came less than two weeks ahead of a Sept. 30 deadline when government funding will expire unless Congress and Trump intervene.

....

Still more defense spending. Peachy.

But Trump promised not to sign another bill like this, so that could get interesting.

To 100 senators .....it did.
Ha. So it impelled them to pass a measure with far more than the 2/3 required to override any veto and ignore his pissing and moaning. I guess I buy that.

Or, both parties move into the mid term election a little more smoothly without all the baggage?

Reagan proposed to do away with the Dept. of Education. Reagan was wise beyond his years, but he did not find enough support from Americans to follow through with that idea. Sadly, Americans are racing towards fiscal ruin with ever increasing spending plans which have no reasonable payment plans to go with them. Americans don't seem to understand the reason we keep facing government shutdowns is because we do not have enough federal income to pay the excessive bills that have been running up out of control for years.

Well sure. Almost no one wanted a shutdown ahead of the election. But the veto-proof majority, assuming the expected similar result in the House, basically tells Trump to shut up and color with regard to his stupid border wall and his demand for cuts to healthcare.

Screw this.

We haven't had a real budget passed by Congress for nearly 10 years and still, Congress won't do their job.

You know, I didn't think you and I would ever agree on anything, but here it is. I've served on legislative bodies before, often with people of radically different perspective. Congress has been dysfunctional for a little over 15 years, and it just seems to be getting worse.

Massive spending is only a problem to republicans if the democrats control the house and/or senate and the president is a democrat.

Absolutely! Republicans hold all 3 legislative branches. Where's this balanced budget? Not only that, but they are skyrocketing the deficit. It will soon be over $1 Trillion.

The U.S. budget deficit widened to $898 billion in the 11 months through August, exceeding the Congressional Budget Office’s forecast for the first full fiscal year under the Trump presidency.

The budget deficit rose by a third in the October to August period from $674 billion in the same timeframe a year earlier, the Treasury Department said in a statement on Thursday. Spending rose by 7 percent to $3.88 trillion, outpacing revenue gains of 1 percent to $2.99 trillion. Revenue from corporations fell to $163 billion, down by $71 billion from a year ago.

Our laws are increasingly via Executive or Judicial Decree. That was NOT something the founders intended.
