Wilmington, North Carolina (CNN)Hurricane Florence has the potential to cause "massive damage" to parts of the southeastern and mid-Atlantic United States -- and not just in the coastal areas where the storm aims to make landfall Friday morning, officials warned.

More than 1 million people face mandatory evacuation orders Tuesday in coastal areas of Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina, as one of the strongest hurricanes to churn toward the eastern seaboard in decades -- currently a Category 4 storm -- nears shore.

I am listening to a broadcast now......

"We are urging everybody on the coast to evacuate immediately. Run for your lives. To those Trump supporters who don't trust the media, feel free to stay put".

This is not about trump supporters. It’s about every last American in the way. I have family on the SC/GA coast ordered to evacuate inland, TOWARDS the rain. That part of the coast will be spared.

My other family in NC will not be spared the flooding on already soaked landscape. Tree work, power outages, roads washed out; none of this is about trump. It’s about America.

The ‘flood’ of Americans coming in to help in the aftermath will be Awesome. Endless examples just this decade; out-of-staters coming to my Illinois from ‘red’ states After tornadoes; who cares where they’re from; no one cared about that with Harvey;

And I see there may be some development of a depression in the gulf of Mexico eventually more organized headed for Texas now too.

That one is going to hit northern Mexico or South Texas as a depression, maybe a storm. Houston will get about an inch or 2 from that. We are getting more than that today. Still under flash flood watch until tomorrow morning.

I have experienced several hurricanes and lived through more hurricane watches and warnings than I can remember. If you have lived on the east coast, especially in Florida, or on the Gulf coast you come to realize that most - not all - but most hurricanes don't hit the coast and kill people. That and the fact that you can't simply board your house up, pack the car or truck, leave work for 3 or 4 days and spend nights in hotels in towns you'd never otherwise visit, provided you don't have to drive all the way to Atlanta before you can find a room are the reasons people often DO NOT evacuate. There are additional valid reasons but the truth is most people don't leave home 2 or 3 times every hurricane season.

Media makes it worse. Jesus! It's non-stop. Terror news. GET OUT! GET OUT! And every 15 minutes your news channel shows a newsperson "on the scene" describing wind (often nothing more than a heavy breeze) and occasionally piddling rain for days before the storm. LEAVE NOW! WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE! In most cases it is little more than news channels flogging disaster that never happens. Ratings and all that.

After years and years of that **** it is little wonder that most local people do not evacuate.

We are not evacuating. I'm on the NC/VA line in a high part of the city. Got plenty of water, food, propane, guitar strings, and booze.

We've tied down stuff and moved things in garage filled up cars. Now it's a waiting game.

The local news has been at normal flooded areas hyping up the devastation to come. With normal runs on bread and milk those who wait may be screwed

Best wishes to you and yours.

Thank you. I'm pretty confident we will be ok further south will be nailed and inland will get flooding.

I hope everyone is safe.

Quoted for truth. Former FL resident here.

Joking about people dying is not funny...

First of all people don't automatically die in hurricanes.

Second of all I wasn't joking about people dying.

I was laughing at this:

You are on the North side of a cat 5....please be careful...

This is karma for tearing all those statues down

On the S.C./NC line bout 8 miles from the beach, getting out tomorrow. My kids are excited for a road trip and to visit Zoo Atlanta. I could do without this nightmare. Hope the damage is not too bad.

Good luck, it seems like it’s going to hit more south. Hate the waiting game, gives me more anxiety than the actual storm!!

There is breaking news, were FEMA spent $9.8 million to build camps this summer with illegals. Taking away money from South Carolina with rebuilding.
