"BRASILIA (Reuters) - A 200-year-old museum in Rio de Janeiro was hit on Sunday by a massive fire, images from television station Globo showed, threatening its collection of more than 20 million items ranging from archeological findings to historical memorabilia."

Reporting now that it is possibly a total loss. They were unable to contain the fire and the building is now collapsing and fully engulfed.

The building had no fire suppression system, and was largely stone and wood construction. People are now outraged to learn how poor the saftey systems were given the money taht was spent on the Olympic games.

That sucks I hope they save something

OMG, what a tragic loss of irreplaceable history for the people of Brazil, and the world itself. Very, very sad.

Awful. Rio de Janeiro has been plagued with social problems, and what appears to be a significant if not total loss of a national treasure will deal a further blow to their psyche.
