President Donald Trump told lawmakers on Thursday he wants to scrap a pay raise for civilian federal workers, saying the nation's budget couldn't support it.

In a letter to House and Senate leaders, Trump described the pay increase as "inappropriate." "We must maintain efforts to put our Nation on a fiscally sustainable course, and Federal agency budgets cannot sustain such increases," the President wrote.
An across-the-board 2.1% pay increase for federal workers was slated to take effect in January. In addition, a yearly adjustment of paychecks based on the region of the country where a worker is posted -- the "locality pay increase" -- was due to take effect.

Trump said both increases should no longer happen.

Consumer Confidence Index, just out, is the HIGHEST IN 18 YEARS! Also, GDP revised upward to 4.2 from 4.1. Our country is doing great!

1.5T tax cut for the wealthy.
4.7B bailout for farmers.
20B+ for the wall.

But we can't afford 25B for federal workers getting a customary yearly raise? People who will spend that money on their families in their local communities?

Inflation is at a six year record high of 2.3% so during this "booming" economy average Americans are taking a pay cut while the top is gobbling up trillions. #MAGA.

Well damn, if he’s still in office in 2020, I know who all those federal employees aren’t gonna be voting for.

Its just scraps.

The 2.1% rise is mandated to be less than the private sector gets anyway, but he's forcing government employees to pay for his $1.5 Trillion tax cuts with their $25billion in salary.

Meh. Millions of private sector workers haven't gotten a raise in several years.

I work for a scumbag corporation mega-accounting firm, and hell they just gave me a 4.2% increase.

GOOD TRUMP! We need more cuts and government employees get incredible benefits already!

All the raises I ever got were merit based. Theirs should be too.

Where, exactly, is the customary pay raise for other workers that (according to you) are taking a pay cut? The idea that it is customary to increase federal spending (across the board?) annually is part of the problem and thus not part of the solution.

And the thing is the wage cuts won't save ANY money - not a penny. The spending caps are still in place and Trump can't really reduce them because that's Congress' job, so it will free up a little bit of money for the agencies to spend on something else other than wages for workers.

This is just politics, and sticking it to federal workers. The hardest hit will be those in D.C. and other places with high cost of living - those people are going to be hit with 25% pay cuts. He invoked some mumbo jumbo about national security to justify the cuts, but he's lying as always because they won't save money, and if he or the GOP actually cared about the deficit, he'd have invoked the mumbo jumbo to cancel some precious tax cuts

Because of inflation, it's a quiet pay cut.

Yep, just like it is for the ordinary folks that do not get an annually increased federal paycheck - the horror.

With # of federal employees in VA it could hurt Comstock and other GOP incumbents in close races.

-_- The rich get the most tax cuts because they pay the most in taxes. Ignoring that for political gain is just SAD!

I collate and bind tax returns of the extremely rich including some public figures that you yourself are aware of. And having to look through them all day long, I can tell you that you are flat out wrong.

Sorry...I just can't bring myself to feel sorry for federal employees. My youngest son just got a job with the Feds. They are paying him 40% more than he was making for the exact same job. Amazing. Even my son was surprised...but of course he didn't turn it down. And now he can work from home several days a week. Making great money in his pajama's. You gotta love our government...... it ain't their money.

You think being able to work from home “in your pajamas” is limited to government employees? This is modern working world, large numbers of employees that work for corporations work from home. It’s extremely cost-effective for the employer and that’s just smart business.

So you're happy workers got a pay cut in part to pay for tax cuts for the $billionaire donor class.... I guess I don't understand the thinking here.
