WASHINGTON — The White House lowered its U.S. flag to half-staff, raised it back up and on Monday lowered it again after the death of Senator John McCain, in an unusual and confusing break with protocol on the passing of a national leader.

McCain, a prisoner of war in Vietnam, longtime U.S. senator from Arizona and 2008 Republican presidential nominee, died of brain cancer on Saturday at age 81. That prompted many Americans to lower flags to half-staff, a traditional gesture of honor.

But President Donald Trump, who had clashed with fellow Republican McCain over various issues and said during his campaign that the senator was "not a war hero," wavered in his approach to what presidents normally treat as a gesture of courtesy and respect.
Even Even in death he still hates an American Icon
And for my friends to the South, he was widely admired up North and around the world
The Child in Chief, has shown no class, just hate and grudges.
Sure glad he is yours as he would never get elected in many countries
What is shameful are the Republicans pillorying McCain while praising or making excuses for Trump

"Despite our differences on policy and politics, I respect Senator John McCain's service to our country. "

Thank you, Mr. Trump. Was that so hard?

Trump began the day showing he's not a hypocrite. Then the world called him petty. So he reversed himself, thereby showing in the same day he could be both petty and a hypocrite.

I was unaware Democrats cared about flag protocols, they sure don't seem to care when the flag is disrespected during the Anthem or the Pledge.

Pretty disgusting how Trump dumps on former POWs and Gold Star families.

19 months in and Trump has yet to visit with any US soldiers in a war zone.

I suppose 18 holes of golf at his various properties is much more important.

Oh give us all a break. The “democrats aren’t patriotic in the way I think they should be patriotic”?!?! Really? That old trope died years ago with McCarthy. Trump humps the flag on stage— would it satisfy you if democrats did that? — yet he doesn’t get what a democratic republic or the rule of law is all about.

I am old enough to remember Nixon’s gracious words at the death of JFK, a man he could argue stole an election. Don’t try to obscure Trump’s lack of anything resembling class in speaking of a deceased opponent.

the flag thing that he did today was a dickhead move.

At least Dems know there aren't any 'blue' stripes in the American Flag...unlike DimWit Potus. Even the little kids he was coloring flags with didn't commit that silly blunder.

It took veterans and veterans organizations like the VFW, American Legion, AmVets etc. to get on Trump's case. A veterans backlash one might say to over come Trump's bruised ego that McCain didn't kneel down in front of the king. Trump has a long history of creating feuds with and against anyone who even whispers a bad word about him.

Had it not been for the American Legion pressuring him,the flag would not have been lowered again, and he wouldn't have issued that disingenuous lip service tribute to McCain today.

i like presidents who aren't banned from the funerals of long serving senators.

The Democrat party is the party of double standards. Suddenly they care about flag protocols.

About as lame as his stupid battle with the female comedian Rosie O'Donnell.

McCain is dead now so there was no need to act like a jerk.
These are all the signs of a spoiled child who was never told no during his childhood.

Have we had a day in 19 months without a “dickhead” move?
