Social media faces EU fine if terror lingers for an hour

The European Commission is planning to order websites to delete extremist content on their sites within an hour to avoid the risk of being fined.

The regulation would affect Twitter, Facebook and YouTube among others.

The crackdown would lead to the EU abandoning its current approach - where the firms self-police - in favour of explicit rules.

The shake-up comes in the wake of high-profile terror attacks across Europe over the past few years.

Julian King, the EU's commissioner for security, told the Financial Times that the EU would "take stronger action in order to protect our citizens".

The BBC has confirmed the details of the report.

COMMENT:-

Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube are **A*M*E*R*I*C*A*N** companies and The Socialist Hordes Of Europe are threatening to prosecute **A*M*E*R*I*C*A*N** companies for exercising their **A*M*E*R*I*C*A*N** constitutional rights.

This is totally intolerable and Mr. Trump should do something about this flagrant violation of **A*M*E*R*I*C*A*N** law.

A good first step would be a total embargo on all European products and a total ban on all sales to Europe (anyone selling [or even attempting to sell] to Europe is, obviously, a traitor and should be punished accordingly).

The real test of Free Speech is whether you defend even the right of others to say things which you find offensive.

Right?

Right, but Trump should stay out of this.
Let's the EU try to fine American social media companies. Unless I misunderstood their intentions, this is laughable.

How can they fine something like FB? Cant FB just shut down in the EU?

Let's see how that would go.

Shutting down in Europe would likely see its second most important market being shutdown, opening up the possibility for a competitor to take up the Euro space and eventually work its way into the US social media sphere. Facebook works very well because it is the dominate player in its field so it gets the ad dollars that other players do not. Shutting down extremist messages would be a small cost compared to the threat of its business model

People who don't understand the average business model of a social media website won't understand how it is possible to fine them.

No, FB isn't going to shut down in Europe. FB cannot afford shutting down in Europe because European and American companies are behind most of the ad revenue depends on.

It is simply easier, cheaper, and more pragmatic to delete these pages. Don't like it? Go Daddy is your solution.

I mean, someone else would just make something to replace it. It's not like, at this point an time, something like Facebook is technically difficult to produce.

But Facebook will probably have different usage in the EU, that's not hard either. Google operates all sorts of places, and has different rules, like in China all the restrictions upon its search engines.
