New York Post:

Workers will finally be bringing home the bacon — salaries are about to break out of a decade-long slump.

US professionals nationwide will soon be taking home their biggest paychecks, as the tightening labor market and economic recovery will spur companies to confidently raise salaries and pay bigger bonuses, according to a new study by Willis Towers Watson Data Services.

A positive business climate, lower regulations, and lower taxes makes all the difference.

Flip side, from your article:

Today’s average US wage has about the same purchasing power as it did 40 years ago, according to Drew DeSilver, an expert at the Pew Research Center. Most gains have flowed to the top tier of workers, like bankers and dealmakers on Wall Street.

I wonder how many people are aware that under Trump's new tax laws, personal exemptions were stripped ( about 4500 dollars per person per household ) off-setting any money they will get on their 2018 pay checks. They will pay the reaper in 2019 when they file their taxes.

But after 15 years of working at Walmart, they finally gave some shmuck replaceable by a robot an extra thousand dollars!

We're making gains here buddy, super gains! America has never been better.

Let me know when that happens

It already has..Call H and R block,or any other tax person for verification.

Single mother with two kids likely to end up paying more in taxes.

And then there's the health insurance premiums increasing due to Trump...

Oh! And the situation gets worse in 2025 when many of the goodies expire but the tax hikes do not. But hey, that's for Future Logician Man to worry about, right? Screw that guy.

ummmmm.NO, Buddy.A good economy, which started under 44,and whose coattails 45 is riding,is not the primary determining factor in what makes America great.

my raise didn't even keep up with inflation this year. i got slightly more than usual for a bonus, but that isn't permanent. i think the claim that the average worker is seeing significant gains in salaries is horse****.

“Biggest paycheck in years” is economically insignificant when looking at purchasing power on a trend line. The very underreported story here is both measured and unmeasured inflation, then whom is seeing all this.

From the OP article...

“But, of course, adjusted for inflation — and factoring the vast expansion in the ranks of low-paid workers nationwide — it’s not a picnic for everyone.

Today’s average US wage has about the same purchasing power as it did 40 years ago, according to Drew DeSilver, an expert at the Pew Research Center. Most gains have flowed to the top tier of workers, like bankers and dealmakers on Wall Street.”

... more work needs to be done before we all reach for the champagne.

"Single mother with two kids likely to end up paying more in taxes."

What an odd factoid. What is the source for that statement? Seems like either it would be or not be, not likely.

I wonder if you are aware of the doubling of the standard deduction which will likely mean you won't have to itemize your tax returns.

That has been discussed since the tax cut was on the drawing board.

Under current law, a single parent with two children can claim a standard deduction of $9,350, plus personal exemptions of $4,050 for herself and each child. This reduces her taxable income by $21,500.
Under either the Senate or House bill, this same parent would only be able to deduct the newly proposed standard deduction of approximately $18,000.

"The head of household filing status helps divorced women, especially if they have dependent children," said Avani Ramnani, director of financial planning and wealth management at Francis Financial in New York.

"Under that status, these filers get a higher deduction and the exemptions," she said. "To take that away is pretty big."

The odd thing would be assuming every single mother with two kids has a tax situation identical-enough to make statements about how much they will pay as certainties instead of in terms of probabilities (i.e., what is "likely" or not).

That's fake news if I ever saw fake news.

Have you ever wondered why republican candidates on every level have stopped talking about tax cuts? Its a losing proposition on top of the fact of a massive increase in our deficits.
The only winners have been corporate America.

.. I was laughing at the premise that these gains after nearly 2 decades of stalled progress are meaningful.

I'll definately be itemizing due to my personal financial portfolio.

‘Stuck in a belligerent doldrum’: Wages rise in the nation’s hottest job market — but so do costs

Moctezuma, 39, worked this summer in the restaurant’s kitchen for $11.50 an hour — less than what she had made as a cook six years ago....

Moctezuma lives in what might be the nation’s hottest job market — the metro area with the lowest unemployment rate, a hard-to-imagine 1.5 percent. It’s not a new claim to fame. Ames has boasted the country’s lowest annual average unemployment rate for more than two years.

The jobs are plentiful, but the widespread prosperity usually tied to ultra-low unemployment has failed to materialize here, especially for workers such as Moctezuma. Wages have risen, but not much faster than in other places. At the same time, costs such as rent have continued to rise. And other measures of economic health have failed to improve.
