Iranians vent anger at Trump as the wheels come off their economy

Tehran, Iran (CNN)Davood Taraji stands by the refrigerator, listing the price rises that have slowly emptied his otherwise swanky, double-doored appliance over the past weeks.

"The price of an egg has doubled, and milk is about 40% more expensive," he says, putting a half-empty bottle back into the chill. "Fruit and vegetables have gone up 100%."

This is the everyday world of a Tehran taxi driver, caught up in the onslaught of the Trump administration's policy toward Iran and the country's economic slide.

Taraji has been particularly hard-hit as he drives a foreign car, a Toyota, and spare parts for these are under renewed American sanctions that kicked in a week earlier. This means mending the family business is now impossible to afford. The local currency has dropped to a third of its value in 2017, and their plush, yet tiny, two-room apartment feels it hard.

"It's caused us to work longer days to make ends meet," he says. Their home may soon be up for sale if these hardships continue. But he worries most about the education of his children, Artin, 7, who dutifully recites from his English textbook, and Asal, 13, who plays a gentle Siciliana riff on her acoustic guitar.

COMMENT:-

This article is hogwash. It should be completely obvious that the Iranian people don't put a single iota of blame on Mr. Trump for what is happening in their country and put 100% of the blame on the Iranian government.

I know that this is true because that's what Mr. Trump said would happen.

Ya, it has to be hogwash:

If Omarosa was able to pull this stunt on seemingly everyone working for Trump including the president of the United States himself, can you imagine what the leaders of hostile foreign countries have been able to get away with while in the presence of the president and his team?

And that is the real lesson here. When Trump is alone in a room with Vladimir Putin, who do you think has the upper hand? The dictator whose darkly ingenious disinformation and espionage campaign has plunged America into a years-long political crisis? Or the guy who got punked by Apprentice loser Omarosa Manigault Newman?

Leave it to CNN to get the story so bonkers.

Let's dissect this by starting with something simple: Can you tell me the Iranian sanctions imposed by the US that impact the price and availability of eggs and milk?

Could it be that the Iranians are imposing sanctions on their own people and blaming the US? Nah, couldn't be! Them Iranian Mulahs are stand up guys, Obama and CNN told me so!

I think that you have missed the point here.

Mr. Trump took the actions against Iran so that the Iranian people would blame the Iranian government and toss the Iranian government out of office.

It doesn't appear to be working out that way.

PS - You do realize that the article is about PEOPLE and not a nation", don't you?

What would your reaction be if an Iranian were to say "So sad that the American people are suffering because their government wants the destruction of Iran is suffering."? Would you consider that statement to be callous, unthinking, unfeeling, and bigoted?

You might want to try something unusual. It's called "reading for comprehension".

Actually, Americans who have visited Iran, like Rick Steves or Anthony Bourdain, Have been amazed at the warmth and hospitality of the average Iranian on the street to Americans.

That’s what their current government wants. People on the street wear TShirts with Beyoncé pictures and Apple logos on them. The people of any given country are not some huge monolithic faceless crowd. They have all sorts of different and conflicting opinions about all sorts of different things. I am sure there are many who hate the United States. And many who don’t.

Don’t confuse geopolitics with people. Very different things.

I am actually OK with the sanctions on Iran right now. But that’s just because I like what it’s doing to the government there. The people suffering there are a completely different story and perhaps at best an inevitable casualty of all this. But I am under no illusion that they’re all these evil people who deserve to suffer.

I remember I think back in the 80's when during some street protests against america in Iran and all the people where screaming "DEATH TO AMERICA" and "USA IS THE GREAT SATAN!" talk... I think it was Dianne Sawyer who put on a hijab and walked through the crowd and they were all just happy to see her and were asking her questions.

Which is laughable because Iranians have always been, for the most, fans of Western styles, customs, and they think American people are jolly well okay. It's the US Government they won't trust as far as they can spit.

The article...speaking about the Obama Iran deal...

The agreement brought a string of billion dollar deals with Western firms for airplanes and oil exploration in Iran. But the benefits were largely stymied by a fall in global oil prices and the election of Donald Trump, which introduced uncertainty for investors. For the average Iranian, the results have been lackluster, and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has been criticized for making concessions that extracted little in return.

This means that Trump's sanctions are not the problem.

In any case, why do US sanctions bother Iran when the EU and other countries are not going along with them? I mean, the US can't be the only supplier of Toyota spark plugs in the world.

I can show you protest of Americans in KKK rallies chanting “Jews will not replace us!”, or Antifa protestors saying all sorts of crazy things. Are you going to say that all Americans are the same as those people and treat them as such?

Next thing you know, CNN is gonna call on Americans to send CARE packages to Iran and Turkey - no Spam, please. (grin)

Oh come on NOW!!!!

If you don't allow people to classify entire populations as __[fill in the blank]__s based on the behaviour of a small portion of that population what would the bigots have to do between the end of "Tractor Pull Season" and the start of "The Winter WWF/MMA Season"?

“Then look at Saudi Arabia. It is the world’s biggest funder of terrorism. Saudi Arabia funnels our petrodollars – our very own money – to fund the terrorists that seek to destroy our people, while the Saudis rely on us to protect them.”
