2 police officers among 4 killed in Canada shooting; a suspect is in custody

(CNN)Two police officers were among four people killed in a shooting in Fredericton, New Brunswick, police in the Canadian provincial capital said Friday.

"No names are being released at this time. Please appreciate this is a difficult time for their families and our colleagues," Fredericton police said on Twitter.

Of the four people killed in this morning's shootings on Brookside Drive, two were Fredericton Police officers. No names are being released at this time. Please appreciate this is a difficult time for their families and our colleagues. We will provide more info when we can.

A suspect is in custody, and the crime scene has been "contained," police said. They said the investigation is ongoing and the suspect is being treated for serious injuries.

COMMENT:-

There seems to be a minor difference in police procedures between the Fredericton City police and a lot of American police forces.

Here we have an "active shooter" incident and two dead policemen and the remaining police "take a suspect into custody" rather than "gun down a killer".

Oh well, I guess that those Fredericton City Police officers simply didn't "think that my life and/or safety and/or the lives and/or safety of others might possibly be being threatened" enough to warrant not "deescalating" and/or "using less than overwhelming levels of lethal force".

I dont know much about Canadian police procedure and arms. For instance, would those officers have been wearing protective vests, like our LE? Did they know if there were hostages?

You are painting with a very broad brush arn't you? Each police involved situation would be very fact specific. Are you saying that when an officer is killed in the United States that the suspect is gunned down by the police for no reason?

To the first - yes.

To the second - so far, don't know.

Subject to later information, it appears that the loser shot the police officers as they were getting out of their car.

Nope.

I'm saying that the general pattern APPEARS TO BE that if anyone shoots a police officer in the US they end up dead - rapidly.

Not only that, but the general pattern also APPEARS TO BE that any police officer in the US has their "I thought that my life and/or safety (and the lives and/or safety of others) was being threatened and so I followed departmental procedure and neutralized what I perceived the threat to be." accepted uncritically - UNLESS there is absolutely incontrovertible evidence that it's total BS with absolutely zero chance of being based on actual facts.

I am NOT saying that even a significant percentage of the police officers ROUTINELY fall into either of those two categories.

PS - The "reason" is "He killed a cop - or, at least I thought that he did.".

Lots of words that say nothing about the subject. Again this: You are painting with a very broad brush arn't you? Each police involved situation would be very fact specific. Canada had a mass shooting?!?

Yep, Over the past 50 years Canada averages (roughly) around 0.57 mass shootings (4 or more fatalities) per year.

The US rate (during 2017) averaged (roughly) 52 per year.

Adjusting for population size, that would put

  • Canada 5.7
  • the US 52

Canada's "Gun Control" laws aren't all that much stricter than the ones in the US (except for CC and OC laws) so it's possible that it isn't "Gun Control" that is at the root of the difference.
