Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross accused of swindling business associates out of more than $120 million - NY Daily News

President Trump’s commerce secretary may have bilked business associates out of more than $120 million and could rank “among the biggest grifters in American history,” according to a report released Tuesday.

The investigation — which included interviews with 21 people who have worked closely with Wilbur Ross in the past — alleges that that the 80-year-old stole “a few million here and a few million there” throughout his career as an investment banker, Forbes reports.

The magazine previously reported that Ross fudged his finances in order to appear on the publication’s elite list of billionaires.

Disclosure forms Ross filed after his Trump cabinet nomination showed he actually had less than $700 million in assets. Forbes removed him from the list last year.

“He’s a pathological liar,” a former colleague told the magazine.

Just two weeks ago, Ross quietly settled a $4 million lawsuit brought by a former employee who alleged Ross stole his interests in a private equity fund and then tried to cover it up with bogus paperwork.

Similar charges have been leveled against Trump’s economic sidekick in the past. A former vice chairman of Ross's private equity fund, WL Ross & Company, sued the New Jersey native for $20 million in 2005, alleging that he was cut out of his interests.

Another lawsuit alleges that Ross and his firm improperly charged at least $48 million in fees on investments.

Others painted a not-so-rosy picture of Ross’ private life, telling the magazine he is a cheapskate who is obsessed with money.

Drain the swamp my ass. This Trump Administration is literally swimming in it.

There has been no more slimy, disgusting, crime riddled Admin.. EVER. And it's only been a year and 1/2..

And it's so sad Trumpsters still believe this Con Man is 'draining the swamp'. Him and his crime family and friends are raping the country. God I wish when this all blows up, and it will, it will only will hurt the Trumpsters.. Bu it won't, it'll take the whole country and it;s economy down. Yet another Republican Prez who'll screw things up and then a Dem will have to pick up the mess.

I think Mueller is going to be the one doing the draining.

So who ain't dirty and corrupt in the Trump administration?

I would assume so.

The SEC fined his firm 2.3 million dollars in 2016. That's not exactly ancient history. Amazing how this Administration purposely seems to placing a fox in every government chicken hen house. Like go ahead and grab all you can.

This tells me that our entire criminal justice system is about ignoring the crimes of the wealthy and focusing solely on the poor and middle class. The police were initially hired to protect property and the wealthy. They apparently still do the same job. Think about it for a second. Do you feel as outraged by him stealing millions as you do a homeless guy stealing a pizza?

Probably more to do with there being so many more poor than there are rich.
We are talking ratios of millions to billions here.

The US has about 5M millionaires and a few dozen billionaires. For that type of population they have specialized guys like Mueller. Mueller scares people like Trump because of how good they are at figuring out the plots to stories like Mannafort's.

It's not because the police or even law enforcement agencies believe the rich are privileged and should be able to commit crimes freely.

If a man steals one dollar from a million people on Wall Street, do we want to catch him or do we wait until he steals it all?

We want to catch them, but not every street cop has an MBA to figure out Wall Street theft.

And here is the sorry truth of it all. The GOP has done everything it can to deplete the ranks of investigators, IRS agents and the like to pursue white collar crime but if one Mexican picks two strawberries in Fresno, ICE is going to arrest that poor son of a bitch.

If there was a settlement, it's irrelevant.

Everything is relevant. It speaks to the character of the man, or accurately the lack of character. This would not appear to be a man worthy of the public's trust. It's not like we are speaking of one isolated incident. But rather a disturbing pattern of illicit and unethical behavior.

depends. if a settlement is not enforced by a judcial court then it is not a matter of public record nor does the agreement show up anywhere.
only if it is enforce by a court will it show up. https://www.rcfp.org/florida-open-courts-compendium/g-settlement-records

Ummm this isn't a quick check for a mid level telemarketer. Vetting should mean (Used to mean) a much deeper back round check with the FBI interviewing former business associates/banking officials/school/private club members/local judges/relatives/former wives/lovers/boyfriends....

While the actual judgement maynot pop up in the first vetting round, there should have been plenty of indicators of corrupt business practices though I doubt over valuing assets would have upset Trump...

It would appear Trump's crew barely checks mailing addresses and how long the nominee has been a Trumper… :peace

Possibly the ones initiating the vetting see it as a positive attribute.

This is a passage from that Forbes article.
Those who’ve done business with Ross generally tell a consistent story, of a man obsessed with money and untethered to facts. “He’ll push the edge of truthfulness and use whatever power he has to grab assets,” says New York financier Asher Edelman. One of Ross’ former colleagues is more direct: “He’s a pathological liar.”

Wilbur Ross figured out at some point that money, or the aura of it, translates into power. Forbes has previously documented how Ross seemingly lied to us, over many years, launching himself onto, and then higher on, our billionaire rankings, at one point even lying about an apparent multibillion-dollar transfer to family members to explain why his financial disclosure report showed fewer assets than he claimed. “What I don’t want,” Ross said, “is for people to suddenly think that I’ve lost a lot of money when it’s not true.”

Such machinations now seem pathetic. But his billionaire status was not lost on another person obsessed with his net worth. Donald Trump termed Ross a “legendary Wall Street genius” and named him to his cabinet. “In these particular positions,” Trump explained to a crowd of supporters, “I just don’t want a poor person.”

Hmmm. Obsessed with money and power, untethered to facts, pathological liar, obsessed with his net worth. All sounds very familiar, doesn't it? You could say that whenever Trump looks at Ross it's like he looking into a mirror.

The only thing missing is a son that he will throw under the bus.

... he even scarfed Sweet’ N Low packets from a restaurant near his office, so he wouldn’t have to buy the synthetic sweetener for himself ...
only the best

if he is willing to swipe sweet n low packets, what would he not stoop to steal
