COLUMBUS, OHIO [FONT=&quot]Leading moderate Democrats forcefully argued this week that the party can embrace a robust agenda of change while still praising capitalism and downplaying income inequality.
In other words, everything the empowered liberal base has spent a year and a half mobilizing against.

Democrats gathered here in Ohio’s capital city on Thursday and Friday in what was an opening salvo of the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, part of a conference organized by the center-left think tank Third Way.

IMHO, this is the democrats best chance to defeat Trump in 2020. This coupled with a solid message of what democrats would do in a platform, rather than a bunch of socialist pablum would be a serious challenge to the inability of republicans to get it together....

That's called healthy debate. Something the GOP forgot about when their Messiah arrived.

I'm just calling it like it is.

I am assuming this is more or less exploratory, just to determine the best course to ensure enough support to deal with 2020. I doubt the voice of the far left is intended to be diminished anymore than the moderates, probably just trying to ensure they cover enough of the subjects that appeal to the majority of them ideally to make Trump a single term President.

FYI: "Opportunity Democrat" is a term that Pew started using some time ago.

What even is the "far" left agenda?

They should focus on the center, but I don't think they will.

Only problem is that they are going to have to come up with more than "Make Trump a one termer" as their platform....Progressive liberals got blinded with hate the moment that McConnell made a statement about making Obama a one termer, yet now it's all good...? I guess that was what was called faux outrage right?

It's called:
what's good for the goose is good for the gander
An eye for an eye
If they play dirty, we have to as well.

It's like the bully who punches you, and when you punch back they start crying about it.

Not really what I am trying to say.

During Obama's time Republicans were all about "nothing Obama," and now we are seeing during Trump's time Democrats are "nothing Trump." That should surprise no one that we are seeing that sort of polarizing behavior from our two party system.

My comments were about what I suspect will happen as we approach 2020.

It is safe to assume that at some point the various factions within the Democratic Party (including the far left Democratic Socialist leaning voters) will need to organize behind a candidate and on a handful of platforms that they hope will secure enough votes. It is going to be fairly easy to use Trump's own actions and words against Trump among those that already do not like him, the issue will be what appeals to the most voters including Independents to get someone past Trump in 2020.

That is what I think these meetings will become about. Who of the front runners will secure enough votes.

Ok, got it....I think you're right, I am just interested in what they are going to come up with...As I watch and listen to some of the more left leaning news out there, they seem to be egging on the more radical elements of the liberal left...This to me is dangerous....

When things are as bad as they are for gops, you can continue to expect republicans to do this.

We know their Nixonian game of divide and conquer. We are unified and energized and that scares the you know what out of them.

What "far-left" polices are you talking about? Defending Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the ACA from Republicans that want to eliminate them? Those are hardly radical programs or are they radical positions.

To frame this discussion as 'Democrats want socialism' isn't just false, it's dishonest. Even Bernie Sanders believes in capitalism.

What even is the "far" left agenda?

My guess....

College tuition being free
Single payer health care
Government imposed limits on CEO/executive pay
$15 dollar minimum wage or higher
Significant government action relating to climate change (carbon tax, increase tax and regulation on fossil fuels companies, massive subsidies for alternative fuels)
Amnesty for all currently here illegal, massive widening of our immigration policy focused on low income, low educated, and or diverse populations in an effort to provide them a better chance.
Significant increase in tax on the upper income earners via numerous forms (income tax, death tax, cap gains tax, etc)
Taking efforts to equate sexual orientation and gender orientation as classifications under the law on even footing with race
Substantial decrease in military spending, size, and investment
Significant gun control actions such as a wider banning and/or significant limiting of certain types of weapons, magazines, and ammo and potentially registration of weapons

However, I would imagine...by and large...it'd be similar to asking what the "far" right agenda is if someone was actually being honest, not rhetorical in a rush to just propagandize, with such a question. The easy answer, in both instances, is "pretty much the same agenda as the 'staunch' or 'moderate' [left/right], only pushed to a wider/more significant degree".

A "far left" agenda is going to be focused around climate change, social services, reducing the scope of the military and guns, minority rights, more open and caring immigration, and siphoning greater money away from the "wealthy"; much like any "left" agenda in the US. The question is simply the degree and scope.

Similar to how a "far right" agenda is going to focus around limiting government influence into businesses and the individual, robust support of defense both nationally and with the individual, protection for and embracing of traditions and cultural norms, a more selective and secure immigration policy, and minimizing the transfer of wealth via government means. Like above, the difference between the "far" and "stuanch" or "moderate" wings is a matter of degree and scope.

You can believe that if you wish, but don't come to me later and ask me how we got here....;)

I love reading what conservatives think liberals believe in.

That's all I figured it was. The way the Right blasts on the "far" left, makes me think that Stalin and Mao are running things.

The right called Obama a socialist for 8 years. They have no ability to measure where people are at on the political spectrum.
