Re: At least 9 people shot in Toronto and shooter is dead, police say
Why does this have to be warped into a partisan bickering match about gun control. People died in an unfortunate act of violence.
(Disclaimer: I go on a bit of a rant here, and when I rant I tend to make a mess with "universal you's"... None of this is directed at you, Dig...well, none of the ranting, anyway...
)
As much as I appreciate the above sentiment, I think it's worth pointing out. We have strict gun control, and a totally different gun culture, and stuff like this can happen. Root cause is NOT guns, and frankly as a Canadian I'm pissed at mayor Tory (who has always identified as conservative, by the way) for defaulting to the usual "Guns are too easy to get" cop out. Sure, gun control can be PART of the equation, it needs to be, but without addressing root causes such as poverty and treatment / management of mental illness, it's just a ****ing slogan to help people sleep better at night without actually doing anything. **** that, if you don't want to do anything, maybe don't say anything either, and let those of us who would like to find a real solution get some work done. It's worse than the "thoughts and prayers" default, as you're pissing off the people who need to be involved in coming up with a real solution. You'd literally have a better impact if you did nothing at all.
And a word on "thoughts and prayers"... I'm sorry, to those who hate that expression, what do you want done? The victims are dead, the killer is dead, what exactly would you like people to do, other than tell us they we are in their thoughts and prayers? In lieu of any other useful thing, I appreciate it. It's human. We could all use a little more humanity, if at no other time then certainly when we face tragedies like this, and especially when our countries seem so angry with each other.
This was a tragedy, like all the others. It was a bad bad day. Just like all the others. And strict gun control didn't stop it...and thoughts and prayers didn't make it worse. While I'd rather the families of the victims be left to mourn, there are a few lessons in this that it would be a shame to waste.
