Depends on the extent. Republicans decry Socialism, but it is woven into the very fabric of America. Social Security, Medicare, the Interstate Highway system, the Apollo Program that beat the Russians to the moon, are just a few of the programs that the government runs with our tax dollars. Fact is that we have what is called a mixed economy of Capitalism and Socialism. Americans might argue over whether it is balanced too far one way or the other, but at the present time, people are not starving to death, and by the same token, the government is not treating America as an ant farm experiment. What I don't want to see is either..........
1) A new 1890's Guilded Age in which people literally starved, workers died due to poor and dangerous work conditions, only the well off received a basic education, hospitals were a place for the dying to be sent, and the life expectancy for the average American was less than 50 years.
OR
2) Socialism run amok, with the government controlling every aspect of our lives. Ronald Reagan said it best - The scariest words in the world are "This is the government, and we are here to help you".
America works best when there is a balance between the forces of Capitalism and Socialism. Neither force should dominate, but should compliment each other.
