Trump says he misspoke on Russia meddling following Putin meeting - Chicago Tribune

Update: President Donald Trump says he meant the opposite when he said in Helsinki that he doesn't see why Russia would have interfered in the 2016 U.S. elections.

Back at the White House on Tuesday, the president told reporters that he said he meant he doesn't see why Russia "wouldn't" be responsible. (Double negative admitted by Trump.)
=================================================
The Waffler-in-Chief came as close as he could to admitting that he had made a mistake when he spoke at the news conference yesterday in Helsinki: he stated this afternoon that he misspoke when he said 'would' instead of 'wouldn't.' This is called spin or 'walking back' a statement that he actually & intentionally made.

It's called walking back a statement and true to form, it didn't put out the 5-alarm fire on top of the Never Trumpers' heads:lol:

I’ll just repeat what I said in the other thread.

He’s only backpedaling now because he got a **** ton of backlash from all sane people around the world and had to shut up his critics. We all know how the real trump feels, and that was put on full display yesterday. Cue the trump cultists who actually buy this bag of nonsense. Utterly insane and comical. What a never ending circus.

That's cause he's given us no reason to believe him.

My goodness, the incompetence, or the dishonesty, is staggering.

Which is most of America. Given that we have a democratic form of government, when the President is out of step with most of the country, its a major problem.

...the reality here, however, is the walk-back is essentially a clarification analogous to "no, I didn't mean 'guilty', I meant 'not guilty'..... that is a little tough to believe as a walk-back, especially since the ongoing MO is far more consistent with the first statement than what he is trying to sell us today.

It did not put of the 5-alarm fire because his history of recklessness with the spoken and tweeted word is legendary. Most people believe he meant the first statement, with today's statement nothing more than a heartless apology.

May we also point out that today he tried to tell us he firmly believes the intelligence community and then, in the next sentence tells us that Russia may not have been the only one interfering in the election. That would be contradiction to his first statement of "firmly believing" since the intelligence community said it was RUSSIA. (that would be Russia PERIOD). In essence, his first statement was a lie as he does not want to believe his intelligence community.

Anybody who believes the utter crap that Trump just said is a complete and utter fool. But they are the ones not to be afraid of.

The ones who should inspire fear are the ones who know its crap and know Trump is lying but who will accept it because it advances their political agenda. Those cynical Machiavellian types are the devils marching along side the Satan that is Trump.

What's even more remarkable is how this piss poor spin will actually be used by his defenders.

All he's doing is trying to put a band-aid on the gunshot wound he made for the GOP in the midterms, but it's far too late for that. Trump has already given the Democrats everything they need to wipe out the GOP in November, and his blabbering isn't going to stop that.

Never a need to listen to the BOILs — Blatant Outrageous Irrational Lies — from this presiDUNCE.

IOW: you know he's lying and you don't care at all.

I can picture the Dem TV ads now with DJT center stage bowing to Putin.

So that should clear it up.

Easy enough.......so why are you still whining?

What he hasn't denied, and what is being somewhat lost in the greater outrage, is that Trump thought it was an "incredible" offer to give up what he perceived to be a US citizen for "help" in the Mueller investigation.

For sure. The left is always ready to forgive anybody in their club who acknowledges a misspeak or who apologizes for an inappropriate statement. And they pretty much ignore blatant lies from their own leaders.

But if Trump says something cringeworthy, it is always going to be presented as a federal offense, a major gaffe, something impeachable, or worse, and no amount of explanation (or walking back) or changing his mind or correcting something will appease the deafening drumbeat of condemnation.

Such is the new normal.

Don't these never-Trumpers know that he was there in Moscow for his annual performance review with the boss, and couldn't just say it while he was standing next to him? At least wait until he is home before they expect him to try to walk it back. Sheesh!:lamo

I posted back when I signed on here the this man is not qualified to be president.

What's more outrageous is that he's now on record stating that he believes US intelligence agencies which state that Russia meddled in the election, yet he took this meeting and continues to praise Putin. Remember also that Trump called the Mueller investigation (of which the recent indictments were a part) a "rigged witch hunt" and congratulated Putin personally on his Twitter for the World Cup.

So that should clear it up.

It's so cute when you actually believe trump is telling the truth.

IOW: you know he's lying and you don't care at all.

No, I believe that Trump accepts that Russia meddled, but if he gives that one iota of acknowledgement, the Left will pounce and say "See! Told ya he's not legitimate".
And I say again, Trump believes that Russia meddled.

So was he miss speaking when he **** all over all our European allies just before he submitted to putin or is he just saying he misspoke only during the great trump surrrender summit?

He didn't make a mistake in Helsinki. His staff made him backtrack today. Did Trump immediately clear up his "mistake" during his exclusive Fox interview immediately after the infamous press conference with Putin in Helsinki? No. He boarded Air Force One and was soon pissed at the criticism by virtually everyone, particularly Congressional Republicans. After a meeting this morning in the White House with his staff and Republican leaders, they came up with a piss-poor day-after excuse and made Trump read it. He looked like a hostage reading a ransom note. And then he stupidly goes on to extemporaneously negate what he just said.

1. Yesterday was no 'contraction' slip of the tongue. Trump merely said in Helsinki what he has said again and again to his base ... Russia didn't meddle in the 2016 election.

2. Today was enforced damage control by his closest handlers. It was probably either that, or looming Executive branch resignations and a damming Congressional resolution.

Speaking of which, where's Auntie Maxie? Shouldn't she be inciting some mob over this?

"I have great confidence in my intelligence people, but I will tell you that President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today," Trump told a joint news conference with the Russian president.

"I have President Putin; he just said it's not Russia," Trump said. "I will say this: I don't see any reason why it would be."

That's what Trump just said happened. He meant to say "wouldn't" rather than "would." Do you believe him? Does the phrase "I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be" fit with the rest of his statement?

I watched it again and I am now convinced that Trump expects to fool nobody with this and knows that all his normal critics will heap ridicule upon it knowing it is a lie.

This was for the GOP in congress and his base who also know it is a lie but need a fig leaf to stay with him and need a reason to stop their new found criticism despite knowing Trump spoke his true beliefs in Helsinki on Monday and said what he truly believes about Russia and our intelligence agencies.

And that makes Trump and those who willfully be fooled by this totally and completely deplorable and irredeemable.

This is for the wife who catches her philandering husband in bed with another woman - for the umpteenth time - and then allows her husband to convoke her that it was the woman fault and he was just a harmless bystander just so she can avoid divorce and all that goes with it.

Sometimes its easier for the willfully delusional to get punched directly in the mouth and then pretend that it was suppose to be a kiss that just went accidentally and horribly wrong through no fault of anybody.
