Japan, EU to sign trade deal eliminating nearly all tariffs

The European Union and Japan are signing a widespread trade deal Tuesday that will eliminate nearly all tariffs, seemingly defying the worries about trade tensions set off by President Donald Trump's policies.

The signing in Tokyo for the deal, largely reached late last year, is ceremonial. It was delayed from earlier this month because Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe canceled going to Brussels over a disaster in southwestern Japan, caused by extremely heavy rainfall. More than 200 people died from flooding and landslides.

European Council President Donald Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, who arrived Monday, will also attend a gala dinner at the prime minister's official residence.

Both sides are heralding the deal, which covers a third of the global economy and more than 600 million people.

COMMENT:-

Another example of how America is victimized by other country's unfair trade practices. It's time to REALLY penalize America's enemies like the EU and Japan by imposing REALLY stiff sanctions on them (and maybe "sequestering" all of the assets in the US that are controlled by America's enemies the EU and Japan as well).

Besides, this so-called "deal" only covers 1/3rd of the global economy and doesn't even touch the 2/3rds of the global economy that is the American portion.

Right?

Have you lost your mind, what do you think will happen to our economy if we “impose REALLY stiff sanctions” on Japan and the EU?

And when did they become enemies?

after Trump let all of our (former) allies know that Trump is the enemy ........

Of the world's 10 largest economies, four are in the EU and Japan is number 3 on the list.

Currently, the U.S. is number one, but it's just a matter of time before it becomes number 2 and eventually number 3. It's not even a question of whether that'll happen. It's just a matter of when.

The trade cluster**** into which Trump has lurched the U.S. is exacerbated by our falling behind in science (social and natural) spending because the U.S. current comparative advantage is in intellectual capital, but we also have an absolute advantage in that as well. When we no longer have an absolute advantage, our primacy and competitiveness at all levels will become entirely dependent on trade terms, terms that, as the #3 economy, we won't be able to dictate and strong-arm as we do now.

Well, according to Mr. Trump, what will happen is that millions of manufacturing jobs would move back to the United States of America and both the EU and Japan would allow American goods completely unrestricted access to their markets (and neither would raise the least objection to any tariffs that the US put on goods from either the EU or Japan).

The US economy would boom and all of those precious American natural resources which are currently being stolen by other countries (in the guise of "imports from the United States of America) would be preserved for the benefit of future generations while American manufacturers would devote their production to the American market. That, of course, (because of the economic multiplier effect) would mean that for every dollar NOT spend outside of the US the equivalent of SIX DOLLARS would be spent inside the US. That would result in America's GDP rising by AT LEAST 300%.

I know that the above is true because I have a degree in Economics from Trump U.

And when did they become enemies?

Haven't you been paying attention to Mr. Trump's speeches?

Your Sarcasm Detector model A1H1 needs recalibrating as it is failing to detect sarcasm in high concentrations

It's been in negotiation for years. OUR problem isn't the deal so much as the BBC is reporting it as wonderful, but omitting to mention that if Brexit happens, we won't benefit from it.

It seems just like it was only a year and a half ago, the United States was the world model for democracy, fair elections, and free trade!

How fast things change! Well, I suppose, if Donnie don't want us to be a world leader anymore, other nations will pick up the torch and carry it now!

Well Trump considers everyone a foe, so... ;)

I think the OP's sarcasm was lost on you.

It is too bad whatshisname nixed the Transpacific Partnership. It would have relaxed tariffs.

If Mr. Trump imposes tariffs on European cars/trucks, and the Europeans reciprocate, and Japan and the EU have a "tariff free" agreement, what will that do to the sales of American cars/trucks in Europe?

If Mr. Trump imposes tariffs on Japanese cars/trucks, and the Europeans don't, and Japan and the EU have a "tariff free" agreement, what will that do to the sales of Japanese cars/trucks in Europe?

There are no prizes for guessing correctly.
