WASHINGTON — A Russian woman who tried to broker a pair of secret meetings between candidate Donald J. Trump and the Russian president, Vladimir V. Putin, during the 2016 presidential campaign, was charged Monday and accused of carrying out a secret Russian effort to influence American politics.

The Justice Department said in court documents that the woman, Mariia Butina, worked to establish “back channel” lines of communication with American politicians. “These lines could be used by the Russian Federation to penetrate the U.S. national decision-making apparatus to advance the agenda of the Russian Federation.”

Another indictment against a Russian agent. Meanwhile, Trump says no Russian interference because Putin said so.

In other news, former CIA director William Brennan has come right out and used the 'T' word - Treason.

Maybe AF1 can file a new flight plan......

Yet, no matter what, where or when there is absolutely NOTHING the Trump apologists will not dismiss, excuse or accept as normal. It just goes to show that today the GOP and self proclaimed conservatives/libertarians, with very few exceptions, are the low intellect morally bankrupt degenerates, who place their victory above the interests of the nation.

Also, an interesting tidbit about initially filling the Secretary of State position:

It mentions guns rights organization. The NRA can't be the only one.

It isn't, but the NRA was her platform for engaging possible ties with Trump in particular and Republicans in general:

Butina, a former Siberian furniture store owner, founded a Russian gun rights group called the Right to Bear Arms and became an assistant to Russian central banker and former senator Alexander Torshin, who is a lifetime member of the NRA.

She began reaching out to NRA members and other American gun enthusiasts in 2013, on several occasions hosting NRA executives and gun activists in Moscow, including one delegation that included former Milwaukee Sheriff Dave Clarke. She and Torshin also attended a series of NRA events in the United States starting in 2014.

As she traveled the U.S., she had a number of key interactions with the Trump campaign. In June 2015, as Trump announced his candidacy, Butina wrote a column in the National Interest, a conservative U.S. magazine, suggesting that only by electing a Republican could the U.S. and Russia hope to improve relations.

The Republican party is up to its balls in Russian spies and shady Russian financial interests.

I'm inclined to believe the NRA accepted that she was working for a "gun rights" organization without knowing that she was a Russian agent.

And I think they knew something about her was off and they ignored it.

The good news here, is that the effort to combat Russian meddling has expanded past the Mueller Investigation proper, and into the DOJ at large.

You may have noticed that Mueller handed-off the latest indictments to another department within the DOJ. Mueller's also been handing-off work to other agents in other departments. Now we see this.

So regardless of the actions taken by Trump & the GOP, I'm feeling a little better as of late that we may be protected. But this protection is predicated upon the FBI staying intact, and we see Trump & the GOP trying to take it down. This is why taking the House in November is so critical. The FBI needs the protection of Congress, and they will get it from the Democrats.

The relative silence of the GOP on Trump's defectory remarks today, shows - among the plethora of other evidence - that they will embrace anyone or anything to seize power.

According to Chuck Schumer, Republicans in the House have refused to bring her in for questioning. Surprise surprise.

The indictment was filed by DOJ National Security lawyers. Anyone know the significance of that?

Maybe to prevent a single point of failure? Get the investigations spread out among a number of departments and jurisdictions so that there's no real way to stop it.

That's true. I've heard someone mention that Mueller has passed cases to the state level to avoid pardons. Of course, we don't even know if Mueller is related to this. It could be a completely different investigation.

Kudos for your optimism. I am concerned that the Russian cancer has spread to infest the vital organs of American democracy.

I'm tellin' you buddy, if the Dems get the House, this crap is going to freaking explode!

Can you imagine how much **** Nunes & the GOP et al, have suppressed from us? Stuff that only those on the committees and in the intelligence community know of?

I'm predicting a virtual avalanche! And that is why the GOP are acting so desperately. Because they are desperate. They can con their base, but they can't con the country at large. They know what they did, what they kept hidden, and what's going to come out in late January '21 ff.

Their complicity will be unveiled, and I suspect some may even suffer legal exposure.

My optimism is predicated upon the Dems regaining the House, and restarting the committees & investigations in a transparent manner, preferably televised live as were the Watergate hearings.

But you are right, in that without Congress protecting the DOJ-FBI, we could be in dire straights.

(also my "feeling better" in my earlier post, does not necessarily imply "feeling good")

Yup, though it does seem well within the scope of his investigation. This is a Russian agent actively communicating with the Trump campaign to commit illegal activities. So even if he didn't discover it, I can't imagine the other investigators not seeking Mueller's input.

As a side note this isn't a small indictment. This is proof that Russia attempted to collude with the Trump campaign. Mueller is under tremendous pressure to produce results. The only way Mueller lets another group make this indictment is if it's insignificant to what's upcoming.

I just sent this to my lame duck (since he has almost no chance of being re-elected) senator.....

"...I just sent this to my lame duck US Senator....

I certain you witnessed today's spectacle of a US President diminishing himself to be an equal of a ruthless Russian dictator who recently orchestrated a full on assault of American democracy. Pres. Trump had an opportunity to stand and defend America or to bend over and ask for another. He chose the later.

You have yet to make any stance separate from Trump. Your silence being an affirmation of the President's policies and actions. You now face yet another, and maybe your last decision point. Do you stand for America or do you stand for Donald Trump. They most clearly are not the same thing.

History watches, begging for leadership from members of the co-equal branch of government. You silence to date reveals you character. It appears to most of your constituency that you do NOT stand for America, but like Donald Trump, stand only for your shallow self interests. Men have given their life in the defense of American democracy; you appear to be too much of a coward to even risk your seat. As such, you are losing the right to even be in the same room as an American veteran.

America demands leadership from its elected officials. The time is now! Are you a leader or a coward? Are you a patriot or a Trump cultist?

History is watching. Today is your day of reckoning. Its the day the people of Colorado entrusted you with. Its time to do the right thing. Your silence is your answer, November 3, 2020 is your day of judgement, American history is your legacy...."

I urge others to exercise their democratic rights. Let your Con senator that you see through their "con-job".

Maybe not, but considering that there was potential involvement of a Russian oligarch with donating 130M to the NRA to spend on the campaign, that sort of increases the possibility. She also specifically has been linked to the NRA.

Someone had pointed that out to me. I was completely unaware of her history with the NRA.
