The campaign to re-elect US President Donald Trump has raised more than $88m (£66m) in the past 18 months, according to the US Federal Election Commission.

The political war chest gives him a sizeable lead on his eventual challengers in the 2020 election.

Trump filed reelection papers his first day in office. The pity here is that I doubt this country can handle 4 more years of Trump.

Where does the money go if, for some reason DJT doesn’t run in 2020?

I wonder if he asked Putin for a few bucks, at the meeting?

It's been awhile since I was doing this stuff at the local level, but at that time you used to be able to declare it as personal income, pay taxes on it, and keep it!

In fact, there were some fringe or out-of-power two-bit never-going-to-win candidates that regularly did this, ostensibly as a side business.

I have no idea if this followed at the national level back then. And the money had to have been held by the candidates personal candidacy organization, not their local or national party. However it could be moneys from the party that were given to the candidacy organization.

Yep, strange but true ...

This country would be lucky if it could handle another 4 months of that treasonous traitor.

Where did the millions of $$$ left over from the 2016 Trump campaign go? I heard they were siphoning it off to pay all the lawyers that are trying to keep them out of jail or worse.

The country isn't going to have him complete the first term if things keep going the way their going.

That's fine about raising political funds but the concentration by our President is today's events.

My understanding (and feel free to correct if you have more current information)... they still have to track it and keep it separate from personal funds. It can be used to pay campaign debts (which is why politicians will 'loan' money to their own campaign), but can't be used personally. They can donate it to a charity that they don't get paid from, and doesn't otherwise benefit them. They can roll it over into the next campaign, or donate to someone else's campaign (within campaign limits). They can roll it to a pac or party campaign account.

They cannot keep it, or use it for personal expenses.

What are the sources of this money?

Sources of campaign money influence the candidate, influence rising in direct relation to the amount of money.

More money = win used to be a standby in the established systems.

That system is breaking down, which is a good thing.

You wouldn't get any disagreement from me on that, no one should be able to buy their way into office.
