Americans rank Barack Obama as best president of their lifetimes: Poll

A new Pew Research Center poll says more Americans rank former President Barack Obama higher than any other when asked which president has done the best job in their lifetimes.

Obama was named the best or second best president by 44 percent of Americans in the survey that came out Wednesday. Thirty-one percent ranked him as the best president in their lifetimes.

President Donald Trump comes in fourth after President Bill Clinton and President Ronald Reagan, with 19 percent of Americans ranking him as the best or second best in their lifetimes.

While 19 percent might seem low, 20 percent of Americans ranked Obama as the best or second best president in 2011, at a similar point in his first term and the last time Pew conducted this poll.

COMMENT:-

Naturally, since the pollsters didn't ask every single American (especially you) what there opinion was the results are completely invalid.

Right?

PS - An interesting analysis of the data has suggested that the increase in Mr. Trump's popularity amongst Republicans could potentially be due to the fact that Republicans who formerly supported Mr. Trump and who no longer do so are not "self-identifying" as Republicans right now.

How that would work is:

  1. Assume that there are 200 people 50% of whom "self-identify" as "X" and of those 100 60 support "Y". That means that "Y" has the support of 60% of those who "self-identify" as "X".
  2. Now assume that there are 200 people 40% of whom "self-identify" as "X" and of those 80 60 support "Y". That means that "Y" has the support of 75% of those who "self-identify" as "X".
  3. That means that the support for "Y" amongst those who "self-identify" as "X" has increased - even though there has been no actual change in the support for "Y" when you consider the entire 200 people.

In other articles Mr. Trump is loudly proclaiming that his support amongst Republicans is the highest that any President has ever had (aside from the fact that that simply isn't true) the question is "Is Mr. Trump merely the same sized frog in a smaller pond?".

PPS - The linked poll has some reasonably interesting demographic breakdowns of the data for those who are interested in doing more than skimming the surface.

so, we went from 'best' to 'worst' .................... we are sooooooooooooo ****ed ............

Obama at this time was dealing with two wars and a brutal economy. Trump has been given the best situation if any modern President other than George W. The fact he’s polling around where Obama was says a lot.

Poll skewed by short memories and young people who only lived through three presidents with a fourth just now getting started.

Things have been on the decline since Nixon, really. Successive generations of Americans have been accepting the gradual loss of their freedoms, not knowing how good it was before, so of course they are going to say someone like Obama was great. If you compare him across several generations, he's not so great.

ROFLMAO, just goes to show we have more entitlement mentality liberals in this country who expect someone else to fund their personal responsibility issues because the economic and foreign policy results sure don't support that ranking. there isn't any economic data in context better than Bush's and his foreign policy including the Arab Spring and ISIS were a disaster but what the hell, he supported gay marriage and that is all that matters to some people

Obama at this time was dealing with two wars and a brutal economy. Trump has been given the best situation if any modern President other than George W. The fact he’s polling around where Obama was says a lot.

That is a lie, Iraq war was won and the Status of Forces agreement was signed in November 2008. TARP brought us out of recession and Obama's policies led to the worst recovery in history, why don't you tell us specifically what he did to warrant your support and post the data to support it? You have been indoctrinated by the leftwing marketing quite well and I know the elites are proud of you, using you to their full advantage

Looks to me like a lot of revisionist history and people who don't have a clue about what is going on in this country buying what they are told but never verifying it

Edit: the best part is the Iraq war was “won” in 2008.

Great no but coming out of recession yes and oh by the way Democrats controlled the Congress and Democrats passed the Obama stimulus on almost day 1 so answer the question what did he do to deserve this ranking?

Ike was the best president of my lifetime.

As I said, about an hour ago in another thread, most get a D from me. (Nixon and Cheney get a F.)

Obama gets a C for holding things together while the other party was determined to rip it apart.

You got me. Best economy and 2 won wars. What else needs to be said?

So Obama was in office in 2008? Interesting didn't know that. As for the best economy, post the numbers to support that claim because official numbers make you look foolish.

I bet this thread will be filled with conservatives who are happy that Americans see Obama possitively and not conservatives whining that President Trump is seen as an asshole.

:)

And no doubt Michelle was the greatest first lady of all times & let's not forget Holder towered over all previous AG's.
Hope I didn't miss anybody!

I like Ike. :) As for Nixon, he was paranoid and crooked, but he did do some good things, like opening up Russia and China and Creating the EPA. His character could have been used in a Shakespearean tragedy, in which almost all the protagonists had a major character flaw. As for Trump? Shakespeare would just shake his head, and exclaim "Too much bull**** in this for me, I'll pass". LOL.

Nixon didn't like the EPA. But he was smart, and passed Superfund. Which tied the EPA into knots. It is also known as 'The Lawyers Full Employment Act'.

We opened a relationship with China, to play China off Russia. That worked for that era, not so great at the moment.

He also started the Drug War, which has killed about a million people.

He overthrew a democracy in South America so AT&T would get the contract to replace their phone system. They didn't want or need or even afford a SOTA phone system, but that's what they got. Along with a dictator.

He had a group of Right wing nutballs review CIA materials for him. You need to understand that every layer on intel added about 10% to their estimate, just to be safe, CYA. The B Team added another 20%, and suddenly every Russkie was 10ft tall and shot bullets out their ass. Nixon panicked.

There's a ton of other crap Nixon did, that's just off the top of my head.

Obama was the weakest ***** of a President we have ever had.He was incompetent. We have a real man now in office.

I think a better indicator of just how great Obama was would be the American voters opinion of him and his agenda from 2010-2016
His party lost nearly 1000 seats at the local and state level during that timespan, and they lost the majorities in both the House and the Senate.

And he had the media on his side the entire time. The reality is he was a horrible President. His signature piece of legislation turned into such a Political albatross, Democrats running for re-election in the midterms had to pretend it didn't exist.

His foreign policy with respect to the ME seemed to center around empowering our and Israels enemies in the region and ignoring the rise of radical Muslim groups like ISIS as they gained power and destabilized entire regions

His administration also did very shocking and indefensible things. Like shutting down a investigation into a Hezbollah drug running scheme which allowed dangerous and illicit drugs to continue to pour into American towns

Or using the IRS to target and harass American citizen based on their political viewpoints. Or spying on American journalist including designating James Rosen as a criminal co-conspirator under the 1922 Espionage Act.

Or flying in billions of dollars into Tehran knowing they were the worlds leading state sponsor of terror

No he wasn't that great of a President at all and his party payed for it. Hillary ran on Obama's agenda, and not only was she defeated by Trump, he managed to flip 6 Blue States

He's undoubtedly the best of my lifetime. I very much agree.

I do believe he failed in warning us about Trump's problems, though. But I doubt anyone could have seen this unique singular mess coming ...

Yep, and then they got one of their own, and they indeed did rip it apart. And they're now going after the rest of the world ...

And no doubt Michelle was the greatest first lady of all times
Well, at least she did finish college, did not pose nude and did not become the third wife of a 25 years older womanizer.
