Police: Mom shoots carjacker trying to steal car with her kids inside

DALLAS – A suspected carjacker is in the hospital after a North Texas woman shot him as he tried to take off in her SUV with her two young children in the backseat, reports CBS DFW. The incident happened just after 10:00 p.m. Wednesday, when Dallas police say the woman stopped for gasoline at a Dallas Shell station.

The mother, who didn't want to be identified, told the station she left her children, 2 and 4, in the SUV while she ran inside the convenience store. Before she returned, a man jumped into her vehicle and tried to drive away. The woman said she saw what was happening and jumped in the car.

The woman told CBS DFW she tried to get the man, later identified as Ricky Wright, to stop, but he refused. She then opened her glove box, pulled out a gun, and shot Wright in the head, according to police.

COMMENT:-

Rather commendable restraint on the lady's part in my opinion. Fortunately she was well within the distance that her pistol was accurate for.

What could possibly go wrong

Probably didn't hit anything vital....

The keys should not have been left in the vehicle, for sure. The gun (useless if not loaded) is generally not allowed in the convenience store by law (signs are posted to remind folks of this) and hauling the kids along (to simply pay for gas?) is a hassle. Kids, believe it or not, can be trained and trusted not to open the glove box.

They were two years and four years old. You can't train a two year old not to stick his head in meat grinder.

You can if they are strapped into a child carrier in the rear car seat. It is also not difficult to secure the glove box/console.

Yeah, ok, strap the two year old in. But four year olds are downright devious. The second you're not looking, the probability that they will do something you told them not to jumps by about 10,000%.

Take the four year old to the range and he won't play with a gun. He might even save friends by telling them to put one down.

I and my two younger brothers somehow managed to survive while growing up with with guns in the house. Usually they were not left (unsecured) in the car/truck with us.

Or, maybe the jackass shouldn't have tried to steal the car? Is he blameless?

Glad things turned out well for her. It could have gone wrong having left the kids in the car, keys in, with a loaded gun. Thankfully the carjacker didn't find the gun. Of course the best thing would have been to take the kids and turn the car off. But it can be tough being one parent with two kids, unstrapping them from their seats, taking them into the store, coming back, strapping the kids in, etc. So it's hard to completely be all high and mighty saying "well she should have taken the kids in" blah. Though I suspect that she will from now on.

Well the kids are restrained in the back seat, for one thing.

But nice of you to blame the victim.

There is zero excuse for stealing a car.

I doubt this guy learned his lesson and he will probably sue her for malicious injury.
good for her in shooting this dirt bag.

Agreed that leaving keys in the car was stupid, the rest... rolling my eyes at you.

From the article:
Wright crashed into a light pole and was later taken to a local hospital. Thursday morning he was said to be in serious but stable condition. As he recovers the mother wanted to tell Wright something. “I wish I would’ve killed you, if I didn’t already,” she said.

Wright has been charged with two counts of Unlawful Restraint and Unauthorized Use of Motor Vehicle. Court records show he has been arrested more than 20 times on a variety of charges — including unauthorized use of a vehicle, possession of marijuana, evading arrest, assault and theft.

Considering that she was able to get back to the car and get in it before the guy drove away I'd guess she was just making a quick purchase and was watching the car as she did so. That's something that lots of people would do. Unstrapping the kids - who may be sleeping in any case since it was at night - to make a 2 minute purchase is a lot of work. I'd surmise, though it's really a guess, that it was probably hot and she may have left the engine running to keep the A/C on.

Smart? Maybe not but I'd venture that 99.999% of the time you do something like that absolutely nothing bad is going to happen.

I understand leaving the kids in the car, should be a locked car tho, with windows partially open.

But leaving the keys? I never ever do that, and I'm not leaving kids in there.

But none of that justifies someone stealing the car and taking the kids.

She was probably paying at the pump.

I have a 2 yr 10month year old and she is SMART, Kids are not just Kids they are tiny adults. They are VERY smart. They know what they want.

You teach them and engrave things enough you could Potentially train them NOT to stick their head in a meat grinder.

My daughter has had firearms training since she was able to open a cabinet door, 10months (she started walking at 9 months) I introduced her to a nerf gun to teach her not to stick her finger in the trigger well. I then taught her NOT to point it at Daddy and Mommy. As she got accustom to the Nerf gun I introduced her to an Airsoft gun @ 1 year..... she understands the weight and were the trigger is, as well as the safety mechanism.

During this period there were times after the range I had to clean my firearms, in a small condo the space is limited, So as I broke it down my daughter would climb on the chair and watch me. (REAL firearms) she would understand NOT to touch while daddy was cleaning, and If I allowed her to touch she understand what and where to touch.

KIDS are NOT stupid, Kids again to me are SMALL adults, They just need proper guidance....And continued guidance. PERIOD. Negligence is NOT an excuse. Firearms responsibility is EVERYONE's Responsibility

He didn't just try to steal a car, he was kidnapping, possibly with the intention of selling the children.

The guy got what he deserved and those kids mom is a hero.
