Deal reached to end violence in southern Syria

BEIRUT – Rebels said Friday that they have reached an agreement with Russian mediators to end violence in southern Syria and surrender the crossing point with Jordan after Syrian government forces, following an intense aerial campaign, captured new areas along the border.

Syrian government forces launched a wide offensive on June 19 to retake Daraa province and the nearby Quneitra region that borders the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. The attack has displaced some 330,000 people and left dozens dead.

Ibrahim Jabawi, spokesman for the rebels' joint operations room, said they have reached an agreement with the Russians in which insurgents will begin to hand over some of their heavy weapons in return for a government pullout from several villages.

Jabawi added that Russian military police will deploy along the border with Jordan, including the Naseeb border crossing, and that rebels opposed to the deal will be evacuated to rebel-held regions in northern Syria.

COMMENT:-

Strangely - there isn't any mention of how Mr. Trump managed to negotiate the deal in this FOX News article. I wonder why?

Obama negotiated the deal when we agreed to hand the Syrian democracy movement to Assad and ultimately Russia at the red line. Short of boots on the ground, there was no possible change after that.

Trump was working hard on it behind the scenes, when the truth comes out, we will all hail Trump as the man behind the peace in Syria

Sarcasm aside, it could very well in part because of Trump not supporting Syrian rebels as much as was done by Obama.

It will be interesting to see how many deals that Russian and Iranian 'negotiators' manage to make in (other) nations in the ME. Meanwhile, we maintain our (endless?) 'presence in the region' (with very expensive military and support contract personnel) and hope for change.

The city of Daraa is where civil protests against the Assad regime first began in 2011. Soldiers from the Assad regime then entered the city (98,000) with tanks and destroyed many homes (occupied) with tank fire. Many local women were raped and abducted for ransom. Many men were arrested and shipped off to Syrian military intelligence (read torture) facilities and never heard from again. Many more joined rebel organizations. Today Deraa is ~90% destroyed from Russian carpet bombing.

HERE is an article with some additional photographs, some quite graphic showing the death and destruction from bombing. You may not have seen this article.

A deal to end violence in Syria, now that is funny right there. The story tomorrow will be the same, more killing in Syria.

No, no, with hope for greater profits for Raytheon et al. ;)

Quite likely.

On the other hand, if it had been an "American brokered deal" would your opinion be the same? (The odds that "The story tomorrow will be the same, more killing in Syria." would be equally true are very high.)
