Rep. Maxine Waters said Thursday she's seen an increase in threats since she made controversial comments last week encouraging protesters to heckle and harass members of Trump's Cabinet in public spaces.



The California Democrat canceled two scheduled appearances in Alabama and Texas this weekend after saying she got threatening messages and "hostile mail" at her office, including "one very serious death threat" on Monday from an individual in Texas.


"As the President has continued to lie and falsely claim that I encouraged people to assault his supporters, while also offering a veiled threat that I should 'be careful', even more individuals are leaving (threatening) messages and sending hostile mail to my office," she said in a statement.

Well, it is entirely possible since this involves the fanatical state of Texas. But she doesn't get to behave stupidly and then whine when that gets thrown back at her. Even Pelosi publicly criticized Waters for calling for supporters to publicly confront Trump administration officials over immigration policy. Isn't it her job, as the elected representative, to be the one who publicly confronts policy? Despite her wanting to pass the buck, I'm not sure where she told people to simply be "UnAmerican."

But then, of course, you went ahead and did this...

- You acuse the Left of "suppressing free speech" while insisting that the Left should keep its mouth shut about confronting political opposition.

Seems to me Max, unlike Sanders and Nielsen, for example, has better sense than to show up in venues where she's not welcome. To the extent that's so, one can say she's obtained a level of prudence and perspicacity that Sanders and others have not.

To be fair, Waters didn't call for violence. She said that when you spot a Trump White House official you should "get a crowd" to gang up on them, get in their face and scream nasty things at them, and whatever physicality that might ensue isn't Water's problem or responsibility.

Waters received information about potential threats, so prudently canceled her events. What warnings did Sanders and Nielsen receive prior to their encounters? How would they know they weren't welcome? In Nielsen's case a crowd came into the restaurant where she was eating, so how was she "unwelcome" at the restaurant?

Might want to think a little before posting nonsense.

The Red Hen Restaurant welcomed Sanders and her family to come in and sit down for dinner, and then the owner showed up and told them all to leave because of politics. That's pretty shabby. And here you are making excuses for it. How utterly pathetic. How utterly, utterly pathetic.

Do you know what the words "perspicacity" and "prudence" mean?
  • Perspicacious:
    • denotation: of acute mental vision or discernment
    • connotation: implies one has unusual power to see through and understand what is puzzling or hidden
  • Prudence (denotations)
    1. the ability to govern and discipline oneself by the use of reason
    2. sagacity or shrewdness in the management of affairs
    3. skill and good judgment in the use of resources
    4. caution or circumspection as to danger or risk
And don't try telling me they are "fancy" words. They're both standard high school vocabulary.

I have to ask if, before reading the content at the links above, you knew the meaning of those words because I find it hard to believe someone who does would have posed the question you did.

There is also the matter that as an adult who's ascended to the level of being a principal as all three women have, among the things one is expected to glean without being told. What might such things be?
  • All three of them:
    • The fractious climate in the U.S.
    • The climate of "everybody's fair game"/"Wild Wild West" attitude that pervading the country.
    • Decorousness has become rarefied. (That should have been obvious when a member of Congress interrupted a SOTU address.)
    • The hoi polloi are, as they've always been, the least likely to comport themselves politely.
Quite simply, once one leaves the civility of the big city and/or exclusive retreats, there's no telling what sorts of folks one may encounter. Some will be deferential to elected officials/celebrities and some will not. One just never knows.
Sanders and Nielsen are "Trumpkins to the max," and they are just as imprudent and un-perspicacious as are the rest of them.

You can't guarantee that nobody on the right would. The first day Maxine started encouraging harassment, I said this could escalate. It seems that it did.
We...the right, the left... have to learn effective communication, and not resort to bullying tactics. That included shouting out opposing povs. Listen, hear, think, respond.

Hmm... are those venues defined as anywhere accessible to the public? It takes a precious snowflake, indeed, that would publicly call for the harassment of others (yet only by others?) and then cancel their own public appearances out of 'prudence'.

With comments like "push back on them" and "harass them", the lines are a bit blurred, Kobie. People don't like to be pushed and harassed, including you, me and Maxine. Maxine didn't directly call for violence, but she can't be naïve enough to think that pushing and harassing will not be answered in kind.

Wasn't it you who wrote that Max received threats in advance of going to the venues? How prudent must one be to eschew such places/events? I would think that in the wake of such threats, and particularly after the Arlington shooting, a public servant, especially a Congresswoman or WH principal, need not be very prudent to yet consider the risk to the literal safety of him-/herself and those who may be in his/her presence, and thus determine that those folks' safety is worth demurring an appearance at a political event.

Getting in people’s faces with a crowd to “absolutely harass” them would lead to violence, Waters’ denial notwithstanding. Now Waters sees it might be her own blood running in the street, so she bows out.

How can anyone who calls themselves a progressive defend Waters? Every time she opens her mouth Democrats lose 2 percentage points.
