'Freedom city'? Going beyond 'sanctuary,' Austin, Texas, vows to curtail arrests

One of the new city resolutions requires officers who question immigrants about status to also say that their questions about immigration need not be answered. The other resolution directs police to avoid arrests for misdemeanors, including those for smoking marijuana, having drug paraphernalia, and taking part in petty theft
What is going on?
When does stealing become an ok?
By the way the city council of Austin is run by Democrats

San Francisco, CA did the same a couple years back and the result is a 80% uptick in car burglaries.

You'll hardly see crimes like that in Muslim countries!

Of course not ... they remove the hand that did the bad deed.

"... and taking part in petty theft"

Does that mean anybody can now help themselves to low-priced items in a store without paying or is that "privilege" reserved for illegal aliens only?

From what I read, its for anyone. Anyone can steal from a store without fear of going to jail.

Oh, good. So Austin will become a theft mecca like other places have become druggist centers.

From the OP...

One of the new city resolutions requires officers who question immigrants about status to also say that their questions about immigration need not be answered. The other resolution directs police to avoid arrests for misdemeanors, including those for smoking marijuana, having drug paraphernalia, and taking part in petty theft — crimes that city data shows frequently end in arrests of black and Latino residents.

Cheap, race pandering vote grab.

Avoid dealing with the root cause of the problem by declaring that the problem isn't really a problem.

Theft is not a victimless crime.
These idiots think this way are so strange I can believe they hold political power.

These are really some of the worst crimes too for communities to deal with - almost on par with gang violence.

I am all for legalizing pot. Doing so would help a lot. But, what is a person to do when
taking of another person's property without that person's permission or consent with the intent to deprive the rightful owner of it. The word is also used as an informal shorthand term for some crimes against property, such as burglary, embezzlement, larceny, looting, robbery, shoplifting,
happens. Are they to take the law in their own hands? This could be a pandora's box.

I wonder how protecting your property or protecting yourself from assault and using justifiable defense goes

That is what I am wondering about. What if...your kid just got a new bike, and someone else wants that bike? The bike is by your front door. Can't call the cops, because it is ok for someone to just take the bike.
Or may be you grow a productive garden. You put in months of hard work, you tend to it, and when the produce is ripe for harvesting, some neighbor comes and picks it all.

Theft should always be a crime and still is . . what is going on here is they are encouraging less arrests . . I do NOT agree with that "fix"

but there is a problem. When you are doing the arrest vs other things like fines etc disproportionately that needs fixed! Doing less arrests period isnt the answer. And more than likely it still wont fix the issues, it will still remain disproportionate but over all the numbers will be down. Thats not a proper solution at all, and no doubt it will probably come with an increase in petty theft of course.

Isn't being a sanctuary city, which in turn draws in more people who are competing for resources, possibly increasing the crime rate?

I dont know is there anything to support that? In general I would think the crime rate wouldn't fluctuate that much at all and the proportion of criminals to non criminals would just remain the same. BUT maybe criminals are more likely to flock to that location if ONE of the ways they can get caught goes down, which is very possible.

This is why Liberals should not be allowed to run cities.

Not arguing against your point
But I wanted to point out that when someone has committed a crime such as petty theft, they are not issued a fine on the spot like a speeding ticket, they are arrested and taking to the jail cell to be processed and released usually within an hour or two with a court date and if found guilty they issue them a fine as punishment.

thanks! but i was just speaking in general terms not necessarily this specific case, i meant in regards to all crimes and interactions with the police but i was not clear in that point, my mistake. Processes also very from state to state on different offences.

The whole reason behind the law change is so people don't get taken into the jail for processing because Texas has taken an anti-sanctuary policy stance and works well with ICE agents. So they are hoping for less deportations.
