Trump administration withdrawing from UN Human Rights Council [W:141]

Re: Trump administration withdrawing from UN Human Rights Council

Really, to what benefit? Do they support anything about the US or have our back in any way?

Why would you even expect such a body to "have your back"?

" .... On a number of human rights issues, the United States has been internationally criticized for its human rights record, including the least protections for workers of most Western countries,[5] the imprisonment of debtors,[6] and the criminalization of homelessness and poverty,[7][8][9] the invasion of the privacy of its citizens through surveillance programs,[10] police brutality,[11][12] police impunity,[13] the incarceration of citizens for profit, the mistreatment of prisoners and juveniles in the prison system, having the longest prison sentences of any country, being the last Western country with a death penalty, abuses of illegal immigrants, including children,[14] the continued support for foreign dictators who commit abuses (including genocide),[15][16] forced disappearances, extraordinary renditions, extrajudicial detentions, torture of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay and black sites, and extrajudicial targeted killings (Disposition Matrix).[10][17][18][19] ..."

Re: Trump administration withdrawing from UN Human Rights Council

It's so comforting to see the citizens of Trump Fan Nation all of a sudden be concerned with human rights violations. A week ago today they were tinkling their panties with giddiness over Trump's new found bromance with North Korea's dictator, the worst human rights violator since Hitler. I guess next week they'll sway whichever way their dear leader tells them to sway.

Re: Trump administration withdrawing from UN Human Rights Council

So first Trump was criticized for not supporting our allies, and now he's criticized for supporting an ally. Makes sense.

I swear. When you look up the word hypocrisy in the dictionary the first definition is simply liberals.

Re: Trump administration withdrawing from UN Human Rights Council

You mean the legislation he's following, legislation designed by congress in 1996, is that the law you're referring to? ;)

Separating children is a policy initiated by Sessions in April.

If your neighbor asks you for a cup of sugar do you say "what's in it for me?"

Forget human rights, some of us have withdrawn from human decency.

Re: Trump administration withdrawing from UN Human Rights Council

We should take it one step further and just withdraw form the UN entirely! Joke of an organization anyway!

Tim-

because you just can't wage war when you like .... the Un was not founded to allow America or any other country do as it pleases .... if you want out of the UN you may as well build a wall around America as you are slowly closing America from the International community

Different allies, different situation.
So yes, it does.

Re: Trump administration withdrawing from UN Human Rights Council

No matter how many times you tell them that, they will ignore it. Sean Hannity has them convinced otherwise.

But if President Trump comes out tomorrow, and says "Yes, this was not a law passed by the Democrats. It was my idea, and AG Sessions implemented it", the citizens of Trump Fan Nation will then come out applauding Trump for his ingenuous plan of separating babies from their mothers, and complaining that the Democrats didn't have such a brilliant plan in 1996.

Re: Trump administration withdrawing from UN Human Rights Council

At least to our benefit. They recently criticized Trump for his policy with separating thousands of children within a few weeks, but if we are on the council, can we not better defend ourselves or block any real efforts against us? I think the real thing here isn't so much that the UN HRC is supposedly "anti-Israel", I think that's a convenient excuse for Trump. I think the real reason for this move is the fact that they criticized his recent policy change that has resulted in thousands of children being separated from their families over the course of several weeks.

The UN isn't the greatest organization out there, but it's better to have a nice prominent seat on it than not.

No, he ordered that it be enforced, ya know, enforced the law that was and is on the books!

Totally called this before you even posted.

According to many, we’re the absolute worst about it.

To your question, I absolutely don’t expect anything from them. Pretty much don’t have much reason to care what anyone who sees no value in this country thinks.

Unfortunately, it was founded that way. The United Nations is a toothless organization set up for failure by its own charter. It will never accomplish any of its missions so long as national sovereignty is valued above human rights.

Without the US funding, the UN will disband, period! It already has no teeth, how much do you think it'll have without the US? Think bigger, man!

For many, the real problem here is immigration laws being enforced and the kids are just useful in attacking those laws.

Re: Trump administration withdrawing from UN Human Rights Council

I don't know enough about the UN Human Rights Council to know whether it actually lives up to it's name and tries to forward the cause of human rights.

If it doesn't, then maybe this isn't all bad.

Is the decent thing to do really to then try to club the guy who does give out the sugar because he shouldn’t have so much to begin with?

Re: Trump administration withdrawing from UN Human Rights Council

The UN human rights council is a farce... look at the countries sitting on it, more than half of them have shocking human rights records, it's pure hypocrisy for them to sit there and tell everyone how it should be.
Egypt
Rwanda
Tunisia
South Africa
China
Iraq
Japan
Saudi Arabia
Croatia
Hungary
Brazil
Cuba
United Kingdom
United States

Children have never been separated by any other president this is a policy that is inhuman and devastating to these families. This is not a solution to illegal immigration. We need to be better than this. This deterrent will not work. Many of these people are fleeing a much worse situation. I do not disagree we need to reform our system, but this is not the way.

Heh, I think I’ve had enough for today. Think I’ll do something more pleasant, like beating my head against the fireplace.

Apparently the UN Human Rights Council is anti-Israel. But it seems to be yet another group Trump is withdrawing us from as he continues his attempt to isolate the US and diminish our international clout.

The UN Human Rights Council is a joke. Burundi, Egypt, Rwanda, Cuba, Venezuela, China, India, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are members.

"international clout" PFFFT! The world can take care of itself. Lets not pretend for a minute that UNHRC likes us, or does anything for us, except tell us how much they don't like us. Lets also not pretend that they do anything useful at all; They do not, they are a pointless organization. They have made it a point to prove that they do not need us, in any capacity. So I say, give them what they ask for, and withdraw, and they can carry on doing nothing by themselves.

And when they pass a law that stops it, they'll be complaing about sex trafficers. That'll be President Trump's fault.

Apparently the UN Human Rights Council is anti-Israel. But it seems to be yet another group Trump is withdrawing us from as he continues his attempt to isolate the US and diminish our international clout.

The UN Declaration of Human Rights was spearheaded by the US in 1948, after the horrors of WWII. It was designed to prevent atrocities like what the world had just gone through, and create a more humane world, and therefore more political and economic stability. These rights included the rights of all humans to food, water, shelter, a basic education, and healthcare. It was designed to prevent people having to face situations no human being should have to face.

Today’s Republican Party has systematically rejected these human rights and no longer believe in them. It is working to gut them here in the US as it pursues a policy of social Darwinism here at home. It is also no longer interested in whether they are pursued anywhere else in the world either.

So this is really no surprise. RIP ideas of human rights. It was a nice thought. But we are entering a brave new world now.
