North Korea has previously called the joint drills a "grave provocation" that could escalate the region "to the brink of nuclear war."

When President Donald Trump agreed to pause military exercises between the U.S. and South Korea on Tuesday, he gave Kim Jong Un a concession on an issue that has angered North Korea like few others.
=============================
Trump gave a big concession & got hollow promises in return. Even the Pentagon was surprised. And I'm sure the SKs are not happy about this. Result: Kim !+; Trump 0.

When are you people going to realize that this isn't that big a deal?

We don't do REFORGER in Europe anymore, either. Did the NATO collapse?

It is not a "big concession."

I served 18 months with the 2nd Inf. Div. and participated in two annual, and a couple of minor battalion and brigade military exercises while there.

Cancelling one is no big deal; it's not like he agreed to withdraw all troops from the DMZ.

Trump could turn over our nukes, and Trump supporters, would defend him. It's what they do.

it seems like Kim wants to turn over his nukes. Going to be hard for democrats to minimize that, when all they gave us was the iran deal.

v. To give the impression of being; appear: The child seems healthy, but the doctor is concerned.
v. To appear to one's own opinion or mind: I can't seem to get the story straight.
v. To appear to be true, probable, or evident: It seems you object to the plan. It seems like rain. He seems to have worked in sales for several years.

Yeah, from what I remember of that exercise when I served my response to this concession is...meh.

Skipping it for one year will have no negative effect. And I imagine whether or not we skip it for a second year will be entirely dependent on NK doing the right thing. As for South Korea being upset about it? I am sure they aren’t happy about not being warned about the concession, but SK has been a much greater driving force in regard to bringing NK to the table than the US has been. They have been making their own concessions.

We don't do REFORGER anymore in Europe because the Soviet Union collapsed. North Korea isn't going to collapse any time soon. The Chinese will see to that. The situations are completely different.

Well, is that inaccurate?

The North Koreans always agree to turn over their nukes. The just never actually do. What evidence do you have that they will this time.

the evidence is that there is no evidence to walk away from negotiations. They've passed the first test, by committing. We will have to see, obviously, if they continue and what further demands are placed. This is Kim jong Un's country now, not his father's.

When are you going to realize the great negotiator he isn't. He gave and gave and NK wrote him a note saying diddly squat. The Art of the Flim Flam.

Kim Dynasty has passed the first test of nuclear weapons a dozen or so times over 15 or so years. This time makes Trump look like he wuz born yesterday. A sucker born every minute kind of thingy. Five will get you ten the first thingy that comes of this is a Trump Hotel in Pyongyang. After that it's every man for himself. Don't you guyz know everything Trump does is a real estate deal. This Trump Hotel will have an ICBM decoration on the roof.

I don't understand why this would have surprised anyone, he had made comments about stuff like this during the campaign.

They are just looking for something to whine about.

I have a few friends from my Navy years still stationed there and there no issue to be had. So it's most likely that progressives are looking so hard for some way to spin this in their favor. That they are just unable to recognize what reality actually is now.

This coupled with the fact that if Obama had gotten on his knees for Un and smiled like a donut. The progressives would be clamoring for a chance to give him a damn award or something.

You musta liked kimchi too. When I was in SK in the late 90s the big excited cause was to make the national food of cabbage and various roaring hot spices "as popular in the world as American pizza." Trouble was the cans kept exploding during shipments. In the classrooms I always opened all the windows if you know and have any scent of what I'm talking about as well you should know and appreciate.

At least when OB met with Raul Castro in Havana while rightwingers screamed bloody surrender we got an embassy out of it. I'd keep Trump out of NK for fear Kim would throw him in prison and demand negotiations with Jared. Or Dennis.

As to your Navy friends in SK from your Navy years you definitely would do better to listen to their commanders both Navy, Army and Air Force who say they've received no instructions, direction or advice and that -- just to let Pyongyang know -- they are ready to fight tonight. Trump The Spaz is the global center of instability and risk not to mention danger.

Seeing as none of that is actually likely, nor are we really getting any information like that from our people in SK. I will take your opinion, however detracted from reality it may be. Under consideration.

I'm with Mattis and the joint chiefs thx.

Mattis: No Plans To Discuss That Thing Kim Really Wants From A Trump Summit

June 11, 2018

When President Trump and North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un meet in Singapore on Tuesday, Kim is almost certain to press the United States to withdraw its troops from South Korea. But that is not an issue for North Korea to decide, said Defense Secretary James Mattis.

“That would be a discussion between two democracies: The Republic of Korea and the United States,” Mattis told reporters on Monday. “It’s a relationship between our leaders and those two countries. That is not something that other countries would have – I would say – initial domain over a discussion with us. We’re the only ones who make up our mind on this.”

The United States and South Korea are not currently talking about withdrawing any of the roughly 26,000 U.S. troops on the Korean peninsula, Mattis said at a Pentagon press briefing.

When asked if removing U.S. troops from South Korea is one the topics that is on the agenda for the president’s meeting with Kim, Mattis replied: “I don’t know. You’ll have to ask them out there. I don’t believe it is.”

Obviously further talks are necessary between Mattis and Trump. Maybe Mattis can get Trump to settle for a hotel deal and leave it all at that.

Committing...as in committing to the Paris Agreement or the Iran deal?

Commitment means very little to the U.S. and we have a long history of betraying even our own treaties with others. We broke just about all treaties with Native Americans throughout Manifest Destiny and expressly broke agreements over Korea and Vietnam. I certainly don't expect Kim to hold to a commitment, especially when it involves giving up a nuclear arsenal that ensures the survival of his family's dynasty.
