NK agrees to ‘complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula' after Trump-Kim summit[W:153]

Re: North Korea agrees to ‘complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula' after Trump-Kim summit

What we just witnessed was the total embarrassment of the United States in a shameful display of craven stupidity by our dear Leader, President North Korean Condo Builder. This is now the theater of the absurd. You folks realize that NK got everything they wanted, even got the trip paid for and we got absolutely nothing. You understand that right? My lord.

Re: North Korea agrees to ‘complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula' after Trump-Kim summit

You must not have heard Trump's remarks in the press conference after the meeting. This denuclearizing takes time; it will be accomplished as quickly as is "mechanically and physically" possible! ;)

without a detailed scope of work this means nothing!
;)

Re: North Korea agrees to ‘complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula' after Trump-Kim summit

Yeah it's pretty weird especially in the context of the JCPOA. As I've stated before, celebrating makes sense if what results from this meeting is a concrete treaty clearly outlining the steps to denuclearization, timetables, and level of transparency. I'm always cautious of these types of deals with regimes like North Korea and have been equally skeptical of Iran. The question is how much can be agreed to without going to war.

The JCPOA had all of those aspects - steps, timetables, transparency - and yet that wasn't enough for conservatives. Why? Was it Netanyahu's exposing of a nuclear weapons program almost two decades ago that we already knew about? We really don't know. But why would Kim agree to a similar plan? He's just gaming Trump. All he had to do was fly to Singapore for a day to get the ROK war games called off. And this is "President deal maker" in action.

North Korea agrees to ?complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula' after Trump-Kim summit | Fox News

It appears history is being made. For the first time a sitting US president met with the leader of NK and at this time there appears to be promising results and a focus on peace. I don't think we should make major judgements until it's proven that NK has denuclearized, but even so this is a major feat in US diplomacy and a step towards peace in a decades long conflict.

I have mixed emotions. On the one hand, diplomacy is good. On the other hand, Kim and NK is a prison state with massive human rights violations. And legitimizing him looks bad. Given NKs history this could very well just be a ego game for Kim, and he'll go back and use it to further enslave people. I dont know how much of a threat to the US or our allies NKs nukes are, though. Maybe its a higher priority than a possible land threat to South Korea, or the millions of people being hurt in NK.

Re: North Korea agrees to ‘complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula' after Trump-Kim summit

That and I'm not sure (correct if wrong) but I don't believe the world community was placing strict and devastating economic sanctions on N.Korea in 1993.

The US only used an Assistant Secretary of State to get as much as Trump, without the fanfares or acknowledging NK as equals.

They still don't. Hell, they'll figure some way to say we lost. Or, that Trump blew it....they can't stand any success from him, or for America

What's to disbelieve? Have they denuclearized yet? They've already agreed to the same thing under Clinton and Bush, so how is this fundamentally different?

Well Kim Jong-un finally got the legitimacy he wanted so there's that, but the rest is still vague. If you read the text of the agreement it's really just a summary of what's been agreed to in the Panmunjom Declaration; these kind of vague agreements are more for show; a kind of "we agree that we agree to talk more" scenario. The details about what measures the US will assure North Korea's "security" and cessation of military exercises are more interesting. The devil will be in the details of an actual agreement/treaty.

Are you kidding me? He sat with the President of the United States and later had him compliment NK on the world stage, even had Trump say he liked the guy. This makes Chamberlain look like Don Rickles.

Re: North Korea agrees to ‘complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula' after Trump-Kim summit

The Democrats need to pull no punches here and obstruct this the same way Repugnacins obstructed the Iran deal. Democrats never get rewarded for behaving well and centrist and independent morons just day "durrr both sides do it" anyway so we might as well blow this the heck up.

America can't afford to hand any political victories to a brazenly racist and sexist pig who is trying to destroy our democratic institutions.

Re: North Korea agrees to ‘complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula' after Trump-Kim summit

In this whole thing the DPRK got:
1. Recognition on the world stage by meeting with a leader of one of the most powerful countries on earth
2. A commitment by the US to stop war games with ROK
3. A free trip to Singapore

All for signing a piece of paper with no consequences or meaning.

To be fair, there are no consequences on our side either. We lost nothing. Kim cant use his recognition outside of his country, and war games were just a show of force anyway. If Kim even thinks of reneging, Trump isnt afraid to make him pay. Remember Trump already walked away once, forcing Kim to beg. North Koreans will be told the opposite, but the rest of the world knows the score.

Actually, its even weaker than those agreements.

The 'Agreed framework' had North Korea freeze and/or dismantle nuclear reactors, resulting in a massive delay in the progress of their program. While the agreement ultimately failed, it at least accomplished that. This agreement accomplishing no such thing.

The previous administrations can be excused for falling for such tactics, as they had not been seen before. But this administration can't be excused for falling for recycled trash that failed before, and not obtaining any specifics.

As we anticipated, the North gave-up absolutely nothing in this agreement, while getting a photo-opt and disgusting praise from a sitting US president - while he attacks our allies in Canada.

We also returned prisoners back home.

I have a feeling though Kim wants change. Trump may have opened his eyes.

This is a really pathetic statement coming from someone who’s zero sum game tribalism lead him to **** all over Kerry and Obama the entire way through the Iran negotiations and for years afterwards.

If a deal with NK was identical to the Iran one in every way, you would not do the same thing.

Take this in contrast with most of the liberals I’ve seen on this board besides maybe a couple of more extremes and POEs... they’re all cautiously optimistic that peace can be achieved.

Re: North Korea agrees to ‘complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula' after Trump-Kim summit

I believe NK also agreed to return the bodies of the dead bodies of U.S Soldiers that died on the battlefield in North Korea. That is a big plus.

Yep. This administration was just looking for a way out, and Netanyahu pitched them a soft ball. I don't trust either regime, but it's odd to celebrate a vague agreement and lambaste one that actually has the necessary framework to ensure compliance. This is why nothing short of complete transparency by North Korea will be a failure. If their military bases aren't on the inspection list then it's a failure. Trump's best deals were in his early real estate days; Trump Tower was a good one and you can make that argument about the Grand Hyatt, but many have been poor examples of negotiating prowess. The West Side Yards was a good example of how not to negotiate since he ended up going on his usual insulting spree and ended up having to sell to Chinese investors. He over payed for the airline he bought, and even made a bad deal with the ghost writer of "The Art of the Deal" by giving him a good chunk of the royalties. I've always found the idea of him being a good negotiator weird because all of the public ones have been fraught with insults and the shenanigans we're now use to seeing on the world stage.

The difference is....Trump of course

Seriously I agree and have some Trum,p friends bragging that Trump has ended the war. Never mind that the armistice agreement is still in effect and they don't even know HOW they will verify NK has no nukes but...Trump has ended the Korean War according to them.

Re: North Korea agrees to ‘complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula' after Trump-Kim summit

It's good news for sure, one less crackpot nation with nukes. Hopefully there is follow through and we can prove it. Though this is Under we're talking about here, so I don't necessarily trust what he says.

I hope it's true and it goes through and we can pull troops from that pointless Korean DMZ. It's good if NK becomes a friend. We have to fill one of the voids being made of our current allies. Perhaps Kim and NK can replace Trudeau and Canada as our BFF?

Um, that's not what happened.

Trump rushed into the summit without any road map for what could realistically be obtained from North Korea. He was head over heals for something to be signed, even if it was a technical nothingburger, and that's exactly what we got.

For all the conservative criticism of the Iran deal, this deal is comedic in how underwhelming it is.

Yeah they also agreed before that they would stop their nuclear program. I'm glad you just out of the blue all of a sudden believe the NK leader.

Re: North Korea agrees to ‘complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula' after Trump-Kim summit

Taking the agreement to the Senate better be done as soon as he gets back.

I'll bet senators are terrified of this notion.

Re: North Korea agrees to ‘complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula' after Trump-Kim summit

I also dont think we should deflect from the fact that Kim is a monster guilty of some of the worst human rights atrocities on earth. I had major problems with the media glorifying him and his sister during the Olympics. Hopefully peace talks and denuclearization pave the way to addressing human rights abuses

I'd like to see a post cold war Germany reuniting kind of thing but I just don't see that kind of dictatorship relinquishing power in any way to be able to do so.

Well I don't really want to be BFF with NK, they still have other abhorrent track records with human rights and Un keeps his people in the dark. But it is a good thing if this is for real and Un does destroy any nuclear weapon and nuclear weapon producing capabilities. I don't know if there's any timeline, it didn't look like there was. It didn't seem there was much actually to this agreement other than Un saying he was going to do it (which isn't worth much in my book). But if it does happen, it's a good thing.

No I am not kidding. Why are you so mad that Trump is trying to make friends with the other oddballs of the political sphere? Surely these are all lonely men who need some affection.
