Steel and aluminum tariffs

Should be interesting to see how bad the trade wars will be, my guess is Very Bad. Yes, other Nations will get hit, but we will be the big losers. They are all shifting their markets as we speak so even if we all eventually make new deals our place in the world economy will be greatly deminished. This BS by trump is going to cost us Billions in business and Major layoffs are going to follow. Sadly the damages that can result from this will probably not be reversable, this is what happens when you elected an Idiot to run your Nation. How many times has trump filed for bankruptcy, looks like he is on track for the next one, except he has bankrupted the Nation this time. Can a President be removed for incompetency?
God help us all....

Trump is basically Nixon morals without the intelligence and competence.

As of midnight tonight Trump is applying a 25% tariff on steel and 10% tariff on aluminum against Canada, Mexico and Europe. The first shot on a trade war that can't end well for anyone.

U.S. will slap Canada with steel and aluminum tariffs starting at midnight | CBC News

I'm glad we (Canada) got the trade deal with Europe done last year, and the TPP in place. The negotiations with the Mercosur trading bloc in South America are progressing as well. It's about damage control now.

He will reverse this decision.

I have no idea what your first paragraph is talking about. As for the second, Trump's real life business experience has landed him in bankruptcy proceedings at least four times, and made him less money than a Fortune 500 portfolio would have.

This will end badly for the US, and when it does all you guys will have the same bs to justify your Dear Leader.

If you ever paid attention to a news source that is not Leftist propaganda you would understand exactly what I'm talking about. You would know how and why China totally capitulated and that North Korea is almost begging for another chance at negation.

Trump had over 500 business ventures, 6 failed. That is not a record of failure, that is extreme success. You would have to go to people like Henry Ford to find businessmen more successful.

You should read Trump's "Art of the Deal" not Obama/Hillary's "Art of Benghazi."

Gawd, would he do that?
If he has any credibility left on the international stage after the North Korea fiasco that would pretty much torpedo it.

The unions he's trying to court here are blue. Therefore he will stab them in the back when he realizes it.

Damn, I can't believe you said that. Trump's been made to look like a fool in the China-North Korea fiasco, and he's still being played for one by one of the most despised characters on the world stage. Nobody earns any respect by swinging in the wind like Trump's been doing, reacting and responding like a puppet on strings.
Your boy's in 'way over his head. Your best hope is that none of the damage he's doing to your country will outlast his reign of error.

So in pressuring China what was won?

NK has not tested nukes or missiles for a while, but still has them. NK got a meeting with the president, which they wanted all along

He has already accomplished more with NK than any other President and it's not done yet.

In the future the Left will embarrass themselves by desperately trying to give credit for the fall of the NK regime to Obama the same way they humiliate themselves trying to credit Jimmy Carter with the fall of the USSR.

fiasco? .....My god Dude, learn some current events from a real news source.

I didn't think of the union angle. But I bet the leaders of the United Steelworkers Union know more about economics than Trump.

People in the welding industries are freaking out on Reddit. They are already pissed about the tariff on China. Can only imagine how this goes.

Kims 'little rocket man' and I'll rain fire on him.
I'm meeting with Kim to discuss his country coming into the family of nations.
The meeting is cancelled, nothing good could come out of it.
The meeting is back on.
Maybe.

Yeah, your boy's a regular Metternich, he is. A genuine stable genius on the world stage, the man of the hour.

I think there are too many balls in the air at the same time........trade, North Korea, Middle East, etc....

We all know Emperor Cheeto can't focus on any single issue for long... unless it is the Mueller Investigation.

What has he accomplished with NK?

NK still has the nukes and the missiles. Its testing site was from all reports going to collapse so that is not really a win.

Clinton actually had them shut down and mothball a nuke plant with an agreement made between the two countries

He has already accomplished more with NK than any other President and it's not done yet.

I await your list of actual accomplishments. Like... how he ALMOST talked with Kim Un.

At this point Trump can be most aptly depicted as Sir Robin.

Do you really think China is going to let NK collapse? China uses it as a buffer between it and US forces in SK

It is a bit insane. Normally when putting on such tariffs, it is because the country in question somehow has the ability to produce the goods cheaper.. usually because of lower labour costs or subsidies.

Now.. Canada and the EU dont have lower labour costs and as far as I know, we dont subsidies either.. so why?

The real question is how hard it will hit the US economy. The US needs steele, but it is now 25% more expensive and no alternatives. Starting up old steel works takes a lot of time and the costs are huge... so what will happen?

For aluminum, approx 40% of the costs to produce are energy related. Canada, Ontario, Quebec have lower power costs than in the US.
In the end the US will purchase aluminum, steel, the added costs will be passed to the consumer.

Same thing when Trump imposed lumber tariffs of 20-25 %- the tariffs imposed are passed on to the end user increasing the costs of building a home. Canadian exports to the US were not really affected.
US producers raised their prices and are making larger profits.
Ain't lobbyists great fro companies

Ya, those Unions who for decades destroyed the US steel industry know more about economics than the Guy who for the last year has been bringing those jobs back.

Reverse, No. But he might back off after the other side capitulates.

Read Trump's "Art of the Deal" instead of Obama/Hillary's "Art of Benghazi."

Art of Benghazi? Oh dear... its sad watching "deep state" conspiracy theorists losing their minds online.

I suppose that you missed the American reaction which "could" be rendered as Trump's Inspired Trade Move Makes Market Boom.

I'm glad we (Canada) got the trade deal with Europe done last year, and the TPP in place. The negotiations with the Mercosur trading bloc in South America are progressing as well. It's about damage control now.

Since Mr. Trump has breached NAFTA that means that Article 605 is no longer in effect and neither Canada nor Mexico are required not to impose any restrictions/tariffs on the sale of oil o the US.

I suggest a $10.00/bbl export tax, to take effect immediately upon the steel and aluminum tariffs taking effect AND also to take effect if the US does not drop all import fees, taxes, duties, tariffs, and penalties on Softwood Lumber. In order to ensure orderly compliance, any company exporting oil to the US will be required to deposit security equal to the amount of duty that would have been paid had the $10.00/bbl export tax have been in place for the previous three months, and to keep that deposit topped up on a daily basis. Naturally no oil could possibly be exported until that security deposit had been made.

Oh hell, let's toss in one on electricity and another on Potash.
