US issues steep list of demands for nuclear treaty with Iran

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States on Monday issued a steep list of demands to be included in a nuclear treaty with Iran to replace the deal scuttled by President Donald Trump and threatened “the strongest sanctions in history” if Iran doesn’t change course.

Drawing sharp contrasts with the 2015 deal, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said a stronger pact should require that Iran stop enrichment of uranium, which was allowed within strict limitations under the previous deal. Iran would also have to walk away from core pillars of its foreign policy, including its involvement in Syria, Yemen, Lebanon and Afghanistan.

“This list may seem long to some, but it is simply a reflection of the massive scope of Iranian malign behavior,” Pompeo said. “America did not create this need for changed behavior. Iran did.”

Pompeo vowed that Trump’s approach would ensure “Iran has no possible path to a nuclear weapon, ever.” As he called for a better agreement to constrain Iran’s activities, he said the U.S. would “apply unprecedented financial pressure” to bring Tehran back to the table.

COMMENT:-

One of the historically acknowledged "acceptable" ways of starting a war is to issue a long list of absolutely essential demands which you know that no nation could possibly accept and then use the rejection of those "legitimate requirements" as a causus belli. Modern examples include Czechoslovakia and Lithuania.

It's going to be interesting to see if the parties in power in Europe

  1. feel like getting voted out of office because they are viewed as being "servile lapdogs of Donald Trump" - Mr. Trump currently "enjoys" an "approval rating" of approximately 20% in Europe - [which will be the opposition line if the government does not resist]; or
  2. decide that staying in power based on "standing up for our country's independence, history, and national sovereignty in the face of the illogical, unrealistic, bellicose, and totally unjustified demands of Donald Trump - who thinks that he is the ruler of the whole world rather than just the current President of the United States of America" [which will be the government line if it resists] is the preferred course of action.

Bets on Option 2 will not be accepted in amounts of less than $1,000,000 due to the fact that I will have to deduct the cost of postage to send your winnings to you and any smaller amount would mean that the cost of postage would be higher than your winnings.

And so is formally begun what I suspect is yet another incoherent Trump Admin. initiative.

"America did not create"

****ing LOL!

American demands mean little, if Europe does their own thing. And it seems they may be.

I think a steadfast middle finger salute from Iran can and should be expected. The USA defaults alone with no support from the usual allies/toadies. Must tell you something, eh?

Pompeo is taking the long scenic way around. Plan B amounts to regime change.

Tehran will never agree to such demands, which is the underlying intent of the Plan B manifesto.

I agree with all the sensible people who have posted here to date. It is so nice to hear common sense.

Sadly, history, ----> Cuba, Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Korea, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Iran itself, Indonesia, East Timor, Mexico, Brazil, Angola, ... don't speak to this being a good thing, and here is the crucial thing which is always forgotten the PEOPLE of Iran who will be slaughtered just like all the people of the countries listed above.

The only safe position for Iran and any other country in similar circumstances is to have nuclear weapons.

Just like Israel does.

Can I mention the always stunning hypocrisy of the USA and its sycophant supporters?

Israel gets what, 3 billion a year in US "foreign aid". And Iran is threatened with another USA illegal invasion.

Remind me again what our results have been regarding regime changes.

If the people of the US brought about regime change in their own biggest banana republic in the world, tens of millions wouldn't have to have died.

Look at what y'all have done to Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, ... and you talk about this in the usual clinical fashion. Have you no sense at all of right and wrong, human compassion, empathy, ... ?

An Iranian position of (essentially) "We are more than willing to abide by the JCPA if you folks are, but if you want to abandon it and allow us to create nuclear weapons we're OK with that too." is going to go a long way towards further isolating the US from the EU (and the rest of the world).

An "interesting" fall-back for Iran would be to (very discretely) offer to reach an accord with Israel whereby Iran continues not to recognize the existence of Israel but agrees not to upset the de facto stus quo in return for mutual inspections and denuclearization. It wouldn't fly with the Israelis but the PR gain for Iran would be huge.

Indeed "Czechoslovakia II".

Great marketing opportunity for Iran. They have lots of sand and with so many USA politicians with their heads in the sand, there must be a developing market, don't you think? Now, of course, we can sanction Iran and boost USA oil sales and keep International oil prices up. Already, several Nations have negotiated with Iran to trade oil in native currencies and that leads to devaluation of the PetroDollar. Saddam did that and his demise followed. Qaddaffi did that and his demise followed. A kind of big business opportunity for sanctions and markets. Hmmm? Could we be in Afghanistan to block pipelines from Iran to China? Inquiring minds want to know, and those that don't understand the question can resume sucking their thumbs.

Lol that's Israel pulling the US puppet... what a load of BS conditions.

All it will do is push Iran even more into the hands of Putin...

Nearly complete disaster, in the form of short and long term harm to the region.

This is right in line with Trump's basic method of dealing with foreign policy.

This list of demands will also be interesting to the upcoming deal with North Korea. These demands would only work if everyone were on board, but currently the signatories of the JCPOA are moving to circumvent the US. What happens over the long term is still questionable given the impact of this on multi national corporations, but I can't imagine Iran or any country agreeing to this proposition. If you're a leader of a nation, you're not going to sign away the ability to use nuclear power just because another nuclear nation tells you too. Sure, Iran has supported less than desirable groups but so has the US to a far greater degree and in their borders as well. I suspect even if backed into a corner, Iran will remain defiant and pursue nuclear weapons at an accelerated rate because it's what gives them leverage against the US and Israel.

We shouldn't be issuing any announcements of demands. That's makes it much more difficult for NK to come to the table and have a positive outcome, without the ability to save any face.

tRump's reneging on the original deal tells every nation on Earth that America's word is not to be trusted.

This list of preconditions, demands, and veiled threats tells every nation on Earth that tRump's America does not negotiate, but bullies.

Great foreign policy. Sarcasm off.

If the US came to the table admitting its war crimes and terrorism against the people of Korea, this and most of the other problems in the world would go away. This would of course mean a degree of honesty that the US has never ever possessed.

The US wall of propaganda has some major chinks in it but the sheeple still pretend to believe.
