Full title: Trump personally pushed postmaster general to double rates on Amazon, other firms

Nothing to see here. Just the President of the United States trying to use the powers of his office to punish Jeff Bezos because the Washington Post publishes negative articles about him.

Yep, everything is a-okay.

President Trump has personally pushed U.S. Postmaster General Megan Brennan to double the rate the Postal Service charges Amazon.com and other firms to ship packages, according to three people familiar with their conversations, a dramatic move that probably would cost these companies billions of dollars.

Brennan has so far resisted Trump’s demand, explaining in multiple conversations occurring this year and last that these arrangements are bound by contracts and must be reviewed by a regulatory commission, the three people said. She has told the president that the Amazon relationship is beneficial for the Postal Service and gave him a set of slides that showed the variety of companies, in addition to Amazon, that also partner for deliveries.

Few U.S. companies have drawn Trump’s ire as much as Amazon, which has rapidly grown to be the second-largest U.S. company in terms of market capitalization. For more than three years, Trump has fumed publicly and privately about the giant commerce and services company and its founder Jeffrey P. Bezos, who is also the owner of The Washington Post.

Trump alleges that Amazon is being subsidized by the Postal Service. He has also accused The Post as being Amazon’s “chief lobbyist” as well as a tax shelter — false charges. He says Amazon uses these advantages to push bricks-and-mortar companies out of business. Some administration officials say several of Trump’s attacks aimed at Amazon have come in response to articles in The Post that he didn’t like.

It will be said that Obama did this too. He did not. It will be said that Obama publicly attacked Fox News, but voicing criticism is not the same as using the office of the White House to create policy that monetarily punishes a media outlet just for publishing negatives articles about him, which is what's happening here.

Follow the money.

Does Trump have stock in Fed Ex or other private postal companies? Because all this will do, is make Amazon choose another delivery company or as it has been thinking of doing... making its own.

What this means, is the US postal service might not exist within 5 to 10 years.

You can trust Trump and the USA, Korea, Iran, Germany, France, ... .

At the loss rate posted, I agree as to the viability of the business model. I’m sure Hillary did the same.........

Packages from Amazon and other online retailers are a profit business for the company. It is the other crap that is causing problems. This could be a death blow to the US Postal Service.

The irony could be, that the USPS goes bankrupt, and Amazon buys up its packages business at 10 cents on the dollar..

We have no clue what Trump is invested in, he has refused to release his Tax returns.

Yes. Endless attacks on enemies is the hallmark of corrupt regimes everywhere. Welcome to Trumpworld.

I'm sorry, but if this story turns out to be true, it's another massive, and I mean, MASSIVE concern people should have about Trump.

The President should not ever engage in this sort of behavior. It's sick and immoral.

No, Obama never did this that I'm aware of. Not even close. What would be the reaction if it came out that Obama ordered his Postmaster General to raise the shipping rates on Hobby Lobby?

a dramatic move that probably would cost these companies billions of dollars.

"Amazon ships an average of 608 million packages each year, which equates to (an estimated) 1,600,000 packages a day."

a dramatic move that probably would cost Amazon consumers a few extra dollars per package.

Will Melania have to curb her online shopping?

It probably shouldn't. They're a financial bust.

I don't even have to point out the hypocrisy.

Good question, which reminds me: it will be said that Obama used the IRS to go after conservative groups. There is zero evidence Obama ordered any such thing.

It's better to get ahead of these things.

It's past time for rich guy Jeff Bezos to pay his fair share to the Post Office!
Pay up Bozo and please stop complaining.

Jeff Bezos' wealth is now equal to 2.3 million Americans' It would take the combined wealth of 2.3 million Americans to equal the $127 billion that the Amazon co-founder is now estimated to be worth. Mar 6, 2018

Selective outrage?

Charles Koch, David Koch, Warren Buffet, ... .

Despite the periodic uproar about how much money the USPS loses, it was never intended to make money.

It's an organ of government that insures postal service everywhere, even places that aren't profitable to deliver to.

It's not going anywhere, with or without Amazon, regardless of their P/L, until and unless a commercial carrier agrees to guarantee service at that level in perpetuity.

Hey, I remember all those posts you made after the Republicans and Trump passed the tax reform bill which lowered both Amazon's AND Bezos's personal tax rates, complaining how wealthy he was and that he wasn't going to be paying his fair share.

Oh wait. No I don't.

I don't see how that's even legal.

But if it is, the cost will just be passed onto consumers and Bezos will still get his HUGE tax cut and the only people that will suffer are the middle class.

Trump abusing his power as president? man, i'm surprised. next, you're going to tell me that there was a secret account to which companies could send millions of dollars for bribes.

This sure smacks of abuse of power to me.

It sure does. It reminds me of presidents trying using the IRS or FBI against political enemies.

Aside from appointing directors for the USPS...I don't think Trump has the authority to raise the price of shipping for individual private companies.
