Mormon Church cuts ties with Boy Scouts - BBC News

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) will end its relationship with the Boy Scouts of America, a joint statement says.

The decision marks the end of a 105-year-old tradition that stated any boy in a Mormon congregation automatically became a Boy Scouts member.

The Mormon Church said it severed ties with the Scouts because it hopes to create its own global youth programme.

I read that the LDS are starting their own youth outreach program. But I think this has more to do with the BSA opening their ranks to gay leaders & scouts.

That began when the BSA started accepting gays as members, and then accelerated toward this end when the BSA began accepting gays and lesbians as leaders.
 
They are not the Boy Scouts anymore. They changed their name to the Scouts. Anybody can join.

Good forbid we have anatomical boys in clubs with only anatomical boys.

For 108 years, the Boy Scouts of America’s flagship program has been known simply as the Boy Scouts. With girls soon entering the ranks, the group says that name will change.

The organization on Wednesday announced that the Boy Scouts — the program for 11-to-17-year-olds — will now be Scouts BSA. The change will take effect in February.

“We’re trying to find the right way to say we’re here for both young men and young women,” said Chief Scout Executive Mike Surbaugh.

Surbaugh says that boys and girls in Scouts BSA will refer to themselves simply as Scouts, rather than adding “boy” or “girl” as a modifier, Surbaugh said.
 
Good, peoples POV’s change, society changes. Progress keeps moving us forward. Conservatives need a time machine so they can all zap themselves away to 1890’s America.

I actually wonder if doing that is why we have some of the problems we do.
 
I was surprised to hear that they made up ~20% of all Scouts, but if they are auto-enrolling them whether they participate or not maybe that's not as telling as you'd think.

I guess I'm not opposed to letting girls in (like anyone cares what I think) but I also can't imagine the sort of girl who'd want to hang out with my old troop, or who would enjoy many of the things we did.

I recall numerous "city" troops who really didn't do anything apart from prepared-site "camping" at regional BSA events. My own went out backpacking, hiking, canoing, etc several times a year, and also worked to pay for equipment and uniforms. At 11, I was picking up litter at a local chemical plant and helping to cut and deliver firewood to support my troop.

In hindsight, those were the most valuable lessons (becoming comfortable "roughing it" and contributing to the troop,) and I guess I think these changes will make troops less likely to teach them.

Different places, different people, different troops.
 
I don't see why anyone would want to join Scouting today. I was an active member for many years. Helicopter and sue happy parents sucked all the enjoyment from the program.

My breaking point was when we had to offer vegetarian, gluten free, and nut free alternatives on our survival weekend and canoe weeklong trip because it excluded non swimmers as a pre requisite you had to pass a swim test. (Swim 50 or so yards float or tread water for 1 min)
 
Australia's had girls and women in Scouts since the 70's, my mum was a scout leader and I did it growing up. According to the girls I was in Scouts with, we did a lot more fun stuff than the girls organisations.

I'm left wondering what will happen to Girl Scouts? Will that brand just devolve into nothing? Will all GS join Scouts? Will Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts top leadership merge??? So. So. So. Many questions. Where I'm not sure if there were that many grievances to match the changes. I understand the gay thing. I have no problem w/gays in boy scouts especially being that I am bisexual, and an Eagle Scout but... Why change to allow girls? Did that many girls want to be involved???

Isnt this old news? I have a idea that they decided this something like a year ago. I have the feeling that the goal of the former Boy Scouts with their decision to take girls or whatevers is to bury the Girl Scouts, to eventually be the only scouting organization left standing as they embrace the lefts project to rub out gender in America.

I am not seeing much value in that, so far as I am concerned they can all die if that is the way it has to be.

What about transgender? Bi-gender? Intersex? How to have a name that represents all sexes. They better think this thing through.

It is almost as if the Boys Scouts were some kind of organization trying to ensure its survival by expanding its market base.

I thought that happened 2 years ago. It must have been planning or something like that.
 
I will say this, scouting just got to be a whole lot more fun. I would think Boy Scouts would be excited to see Girl Scouts in the woods. Being Teenagers. Partially supervised.

Their decision to make. If what the BS are doing is against the church, they have every right to sever those ties.

From what I understand the girl scouts was never the program boy scouts was. I have heard many theories on this but I think it boils down to boys and girls being different and having different interests.

Kids will be kids. It will be summer camp in the woods. Only the lazy get caught.

Wanted to add a bit more:

I think it is great. Boys are going to have more fun with girls around in the upper levels. Most likely same for the girls. When they are younger, not so much as boys have cooties and what not.

Doubt it. The program existed for 105 years without there being girls in it. I don't think the appeal was ever about getting laid.

Yeah I understand most girl scout leaders think Girl Scouts is just arts and crafts and selling cookies, but there's nothing in the rules that states you can't run it more like a BS troop. My dad was a scoutmaster and my mom modeled her GS troop after it. She took her girls on camping trips, museums, hikes, bike rides, summer parties, and cross country trips. The girls all stayed until they were 18 because of how fun it was.
