[R.I.P.] Former first lady Barbara Bush dies at age 92 [W:20]

I consider the Bush's to be the last great men to be president. Faulty, to be sure, but they put service to country above everything else. The assholes since then are of weak character.

I first met GHWB when he came to campaign at his alma mater in the spring of 1980. One of the former admissions officers I knew well (who was actually an NSA guy) was head of his security and that fellow got me a face to face 30 second meeting with Mr. Bush. I remember when he ran again for president in 1988, one of his campaign slogans was that GHWB had the best resume of anyone who ever ran for president. Bush had been a BMOC at Phillips Andover-my father (whose brother-KIA at Okinawa originally in Bush's class) was one at Hotchkiss and used to admit-"he's got one hell of a resume-even for an Andover guy). In fact just about everyone who knew GHWB respected the guy.

In 1992, it appeared he was sick of the BS. One close friend of his who lives in my home town noted that GHWB in 92 had the attitude that if people really wanted Clinton, after all the stuff GHWB had done for the country-"let them have him"

I'm not speaking from experience, thank god - but imagine the notion of killing a child in the womb when you've lost a child at age 3.

Choosing not to continue a pregnancy and losing a 3 y/o is not equivalent.

Why in the hell does that matter? What the hell is wrong with you people?
Perhaps I would be out of line, but I think you have his (their) intention(s) wrong.

I was just trying to answer the question asked. Still, you get a like from me because, you’re right, it doesn’t matter.

You would be correct.
The COPD just seemed very odd.
Being a former smoker makes me want to know.

I was watching a video news segment and couldn't help but smile at them at 1:14 in this tape, at the top of the page.

When was the last time you saw an older couple do that? :)

You have to love a woman who so fearlessly spoke her mind and loved her husband and family. RIP Barbara.

Bless her heart. She was all class, all grace, all beauty. What a woman! May she sleep with the angels and play all day. All women should look up to Barbara Bush. She epitomized grace, she set the stage. Amazing lady. Thank you, Barbara. You left your mark on this country and you will be forever remembered and missed.

I thought about this statement, running through the presidents in the following decades. I agree with you. Bush Sr. was a really great president, in my opinion. I was seriously annoyed when this Clinton "upstart" won (even though I did vote for Clinton 4 years later, because frankly Bob Dole wasn't my cuppa.)

One of my favorite memories of her was just a few years back, when Poppy was in a wheelchair. He'd always been old school, and used to tease women with whom he and Barb were good friends with a quick pinch on the, ahem, lower cheek. So there he was, at a public event, with a woman he'd known for decades standing beside him... and yes, his eyes twinkled and he made his signature move. Barbara just glanced down and said loudly enough for everyone in the vicinity to hear, "Someday you're going to get arrested for that."

Seriously, it cracked me up!

Didn't know much about her, but based on the little bit I saw, she seemed like a nice woman. May she RIP.

I wondered when I saw you were in the thread if your post would surprise me. It didn't.

While his post was in poor taste, and ridiculously partisan, he isn't the only one to be partisan in this thread. A few right wing posters here took cheap partisan shots as well, yet for some reason that went unnoticed.

My sister in law met her on the beach near Kennebunkport. She was walking her dog with curlers in her hair. She said she had some "shindig" to attend that night and had to walk the dog before they went. She was gracious , down to earth and very nice. She had a little baggy to clean up after the dog. The Secret Service guy was nice too. She even took a picture with my sister in law with the curlers in her hair as long as my sister in law didn't put in on twitter. She didn't want to have a picture out there with her in curlers. Nice lady. RIP.

Nobody else, right or left, attacked the very nice woman who died though.

Fair enough, but i personally think partisan politics period should be left out of this thread. This thread should be about honoring this woman's life, not attacking her, or others on the "other side", even if they are alive.

This is an official RIP thread, there are actual rules for RIP threads, and this thread has already been warned at post #20.

RIP to a very classy lady.

I understand what you're saying. Generally speaking, though, there seems to be a good deal more bipartisan agreement than most which says something about Barbara Bush, I think.

This morning on Morning Joe they did a very long montage of personal pictures from her life, and had Andy Card (her son's Chief of Staff) talking about her and her legacy. It was a wonderful glimpse into the woman, not just the wife and mother of two Presidents, but the woman who worshipped her family, suffered the tragic loss of a child, played with and enjoyed her dogs, had to spend her newly engaged days worrying about him at war, moved almost 40 times with her husband and family, supported him in his decades to the service of the country, made literacy her key agenda, raised truly great children, and really led the country as a mother/grandmotherly figure to so many of us. She made Talbots clothing chic. She made pearl necklaces en vogue. She had wisdom and patience and great insight.

My favorite "love story" shared this morning was how "Poppy" Bush (as Card kept calling him) first met her. It was at a dance, and he said something to a friend about the girl in the sweater. The friend said something like "Do you want to meet her?" and HW gave him very much a "Duh" reply. They got engaged 18 months later, right before he went off to WW2 to be a navy pilot - and he named his 3 planes after her (Barbara, Barbara II and Barbara III). Now that's love.

When a person passes on, you try to think about what impact that person had on the world and future generations. It isn't always a good impact, but many times it's meaningful and great. That was the case with Barbara Pierce Bush.
