I beg to differ. In my last employment met 10's of thousands of people, some bright as hell to other not so much. Majority were truckers, and many would be surprised at how well educated many are.
Throw in that many got hung up on obviously false reports, from FB to some news site, to other sources.

But, as you point out, information travels very fast. I know it is chic to be cynical and Winnie has the best quotes, but that speed has also served to inform the public.
