WASHINGTON — The National Guard will deploy nearly 500 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, the government announced Friday, in the first step in President Donald Trump’s plan to curb illegal immigration.

The first troops will arrive in the next 24 to 48 hours, according to a senior defense official.

What a colossal waste of our tax money. This is Trump's response to the Congress not funding his border wall.

Exactly.

Trump is a pit bull, he keeps moving towards the objective as best he can and a lot of people love him for that...that and his honesty.

Protecting the country is never a waste of money.

His honesty! Yikes!
Imagine someone who loves Trump for his honesty. Imagine what their world must be like, what kind of people they have in their lives.

Certainly not. But this is a misuse of our military.

Then you should have no problem here either as they are simply going to be doing the same thing that ICE does. Do their best to keep people that are attempting to enter the country illegally from entering. And its not like this is the first time that this has happened as your own article notes. Bush sent 6000 Natl Guard and Obama provided aerial surveillance.

Let me ask you another question. How would YOU secure our border?

I think big U.S. companies could invest more in northern Mexico to make it more attractive to stay there. I think Trump & his supporters are looking at this problem from the wrong perspective.

They could....but they don't want to keep paying ransom for kidnapped employees by the drug cartels.

Honesty? Trump is a proven liar and fake.

Did you feel the same way when Obama did it, or is it a big deal now because President Trump is doing it?

I think big U.S. companies could invest more in northern Mexico to make it more attractive to stay there. I think Trump & his supporters are looking at this problem from the wrong perspective.

Ah, invest in Mexico. I've heard of that route before. The problem with it is twofold.

1: There is way too much corruption in Mexico's government for it to actually succeed. Not to mention the Cartels.

2: Investment by our companies means not investing in ourselves. Unless you can figure out how to make sure companies invest in the US also? Ever since NAFTA our manufacturing jobs have steadily been moving south of the border leaving many cities and towns to either disappear entirely or become slums.

3: It would require far FAR more money to do what you wish than what is being suggested by Trump.

Now, I have no problem in the ideology of investing in other countries to help lift them out of 3rd world status. It's actually the most humane way of ensuring prosperity. But it can't be done at the expense of ourselves. As my folks told me: "It's great that you want to help others. But if you can't support yourself more than you help those you're wanting to help then you will be dragged down to their level and then you won't be able to help anyone." So between those three things, there's simply no realistic way of doing what you want done at this point in time. Sucks. But that is the reality that we live in.

BINGO!

What has amazed me in these three decades of NAFTA is that Mexico has not copied Canada, and built up an entire industry existent on proximity to the US border.

Love or hate Americans, but they, without realizing it, have created at enormously fat and juicy opportunity to make $$$$$$$$. You're never far from an interstate and never far from an interstate hub, transportation is cheap and things move between states very easily

There's no border anymore, at all; not for day shopping, dining out, movies, taking a drive, whatever. On both sides! Instead of walking north to pick fruit, pick Mexican fruit and offer it for sale at a border store.

(it's a metaphor, fruit that is)

Here, it's the reverse, Canada is the megalopolis with rural America along the border vying for our $. In Watcom county alone, more than 3,000 people earn their living directly or indirectly to Canadian business (which will die if NAFTA goes away).
I will not be convinced that business ON BOTH sides there have failed to see the ripe pickings or locating on or near the border. We have Vancouver based tech firms that ship out of warehouses in Bellingham where rental space if one 10th what it is here. And the stuff slides either way through the border like **** through a goose.
I've said this before, but it appears to me Americans have failed to take advantage of so many of the opportunities NAFTA have offered. Want to know the first industry to suffer in Canada because of NAFTA? Tulips.

They are sending in the National Guard. We, and maybe they, don't know what their duties are. Maybe they'll just hold them ready until they figure that out. ICE refuses to give the public the figures on how many are released under "catch-and-release." A guestimate would be 7,500 a month, which was before the recent high increase in illegal crossings. The immigration courts can’t keep up with their docket loads as is, let alone adding more. We don’t know the capacity of existing military facilities that can be properly used as detention centers, how many more detention centers must be built, and how long it will take to make all that ready for those to be detained. We don’t know on what day they will actually stop “releasing.” The courts have already ruled that women and children can’t be held any longer than 21 days. I doubt this will all turn out as Trump says, though I’m not sure of what he means by what he says until later on and again after that.

BTW, about half of illegal immigrants anew are from visa overstays. It makes as much sense to spend $25B there as on a border wall. The Great Wall of China did not work, either.

Exactly.

When has trump been honest about anything, all he does is lie!

The troops cannot do what ICE does, they cannot detain, they cannot arrest, they cannot stop anyone.

You mean outsource more jobs to Mexico

That business actually does exist on the Mexican side and it is drugs and the violence that goes with it.

If that violence wasn't there, you might have a point.

You mean outsource more jobs to Mexico

No. Invest in plants in Mexico to employ Mexicans, not replace Americans already working in the U.S.
