McConnell: Midterms could be 'a Category 3, 4 or 5' storm for GOP

(R-Ky.) says that November's midterm elections will be "challenging" for Republicans, but he can't yet predict the strength of the headwinds.

“This is going to be a challenging election year,” McConnell said in a Tuesday interview with Kentucky Today. “We know the wind is going to be in our face. We don’t know whether it’s going to be a Category 3, 4 or 5.”

McConnell said he’s optimistic his party can hold on to a majority in the Senate but the fight for the House, where every seat is up for election this year, will be more daunting.

Why would McConnell think this? We keep hearing about how wonderful Trump is, how this is the best economy in the history of our economies, the illegals are going to be kept at bay, we've pulled out of almost everything Obama got un into, we are building a big beautiful wall, Trump has virtually singlehandedly defeated ISIS, the kids protesting against gun violence in school have strengthened conservatives and gun owners, the Mueller investigation is nothing but a witch hunt against Trump, the Democrats and the FBI are completely corrupt and Trump was wonderful to point this all out....

So if all that is true, wouldn't we expect an overwhelming Republican blowout?

Good point. McConnell has done all he can to support Trump and with the tremendous results making America great again you would think they are all expecting to win at least 90% of House seats and gain 2/3 control of the Senate.

Unless of course its all BS coming out of their mouths for the past year and they really know how bad they have screwed the American people and how its going to be payback time in November.

Perhaps if McConnell passes the normal (12?) federal budget (appropriation?) bills before October (for the first time since 1997) then reoublicant congressional leadership just might gain a bit of respect.

Midterms typically go to the opposing party, so it is to be expected that the dems will gain ground. No surprise. The blow-back during Obama's two mid-terms was huge, and I wonder if this fall the dems will do as well.

i feel like i am pulling up to a huge accident on the road ahead....cant see what is there....but i know it is bad

just want to get through all the traffic, and get to the other side where at least i can see clear sailing ahead

Could be. But these GOP folks have really good gerrymandered bunkers to hide from the hurricane in. I think the dems will make big gains but I don't think the Dems will take majority this fall because of that unfortunately.

Given how ridiculously gerrymandered the House is in favor of Republicans and given that Democrats are defending significantly more Senate seats, and given that Democrats tend to struggle with turnout in mid-terms I'd say there is really no good excuse for Republicans to lose much ground unless there's a massive massive recoil against Trump.

That would actually be a very interesting thing to watch and I don't disagree with your thinking. If they were able to pass something before October, they could at least talk about that. As it stands, they won't have anything to talk about but the tax law, which may or may not be enough come November. The Republican Party, with its majorities in Congress and control of the White House, has done virtually nothing since January of 2017.

I will vehemently disagree with you. The voters are the ones with the power, they are the ones that fail in the end. WE hire the political representatives, that we keep rehiring the same bozos (left and right) who fail us, is on the PEOPLE. It's not a shock though, and most of this can be tied back to the Roosevelts and the Progressive revolution of the first part of the 20th century. FDR and his Cousin laid a foundation of fail that haunts us still.

If I was a liberal, I'd want him to stay. I can't imagine a Democrat controlled Congress with a Republican President (opposite of what we had before Trump), where the Democrat leader bends over and gives him everything he wants. That's why I hate McConnell.

Because Trump's character, call it his persona has alienated independents against the Republican Party, the party of Trump. Not necessarily Trump's policies and his stances on different issues. Those independents are relatively split. For some, against some. If it were just policy, the issues, what Trump has or hasn't done, you'd be looking at a 50-50 split among indies.

That isn't the case. Trump's in your face, uncouth, obnoxious persona is driving them away. Remember independents went for Trump 46-42 over Clinton with 12% voting third party. At the end of January 2017 independents gave Trump a 36% approve/28% disapprove job approval. Question 34.

It's those that caused Trump's rise in disapproval that will most likely be voting Democratic in the upcoming midterms. Its not that the Democrats in congress are liked anymore than the Republicans by independents. They're not. Only 20% of all independents have a favorable view of the Democrats in congress, 54% unfavorable. Republicans in congress, independents view them with a 19% favorable, 55% unfavorable. Questions 109A and 109B.

Trump won the presidency because of the independent anti-Clinton vote. 70% of indies had a negative view of her vs. 57% for Trump. It will be the anti-Trump indies that will hand Democrats a win in November. As I stated and I must emphasize this, not because independents like the democrats or think the democrats will do a better job than Republicans. They don't. But by voting Democratic they are shoving his obnoxious, uncouth, non-presidential behavior back in Trump's face.

Darn shame we don't have a viable third party, it would take over congress this year if we did due to how much disliked both the Democrats and Republicans in congress are.
