Re: David Hogg Goes After John McCain: Why Do You Take So Much Money From the NRA?
Speaking for myself here: For the first time ever (starting a few weeks ago), I seriously advocated for repeal of the 2nd Amendment. This was out of a frustration with gun rights activists for holding to the belief that they are not required to negotiate on gun control measures to any degree. More to the point, they behave with the entitled view that they don't even need to participate seriously in such a discussion. My goal in repealing the 2A is that it would force gun rights activists to the table and actually negotiate. As it stands, they stand comfortably shielded behind the 2nd Amendment and give nothing. If they relented on certain measures, my talk of repealing the 2A would dry up instantly, and considering that such a suggestion is creeping into the mainstream, I don't think I'm alone. And yet, for all our frustration, we're still not at the point of talking about banning guns.
If a comic book ever writes my villain origin story, it'll focus on the day that the NRA sued Florida over its gun control law. When I saw that headline I thought, "Oh, well that's the problem then. The 2nd Amendment has to go."
What the f.......??!?!?!?
Nah, I get it. You bring up a fantastic point. I never considered a threat to repeal as an attempt for gun owners to do something, ...anything!
You are absolutely right. Gun owners ("gun rights activists") do have a responsibility, no, an
obligation to defend the Second Amendment
properly. Instead they drink that NRA/GOP kool-aid that instructs them that "liberals" just want their guns so they essentially insist on anarchy.
However this is March of 2018. The Constitution was ratified in June of 1788. For 230 years, Americans have had the Right to "own and bear arms." To this day, you may legally purchase an AR-15, which is a civilianized version of the military's M-16 Assault Rifle (hardly a single-shot musket). It seems simple to me:
- No diagnosed mentally-ill person may handle/purchase a firearm (Sandy Hook, Aurora, and Florida)
- Be 21 (arbitrary age of decision)
- A clearly understood separation of military/civilian weaponry
Who does this hurt? There is no argument that anybody on the planet can produce that will legitimize a defense against such simple guidelines. America's Second Amendment used to be romanticized. Even in
Red Dawn it was used to illustrate defense against foreign invasion. But today? We are just a bunch of dumb asses imagining government dominance, illegal immigrants from Mexico, Muslim terrorism, and LIBERALS!!! And this garbage is very much a Fox News game.
But, like you alluded to, we have not seen enough dead elementary, high school, and concert goers die for us to really talk about it. I don't know what "responsible" gun owners are waiting for. We are fools and our youth are figuring that out. Such is the course of history.
