Hours after President Donald Trump told a group of Missouri donors that Japanese regulators were dropping bowling balls on American automobiles to keep them off the market, the White House insisted the president's anecdote was just an allegory.

"Obviously, he's joking about this particular test,” Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Thursday afternoon, telling a reporter who said he’d covered the auto industry in Japan that Trump's anecdote was merely "illustrative of creative practices” countries use to keep American goods out of their markets.

With Trump it's hard to tell the difference between lying, joking & telling the truth.

How many times do we have to hear this excuse? Trump runs off at the mouth, says something not based in fact, that is reckless, embarrassing, and it's once again "the President was joking".

Let's say that it's true, how many times does he have to do this before he learns his "jokes" aren't funny, aren't taken as jokes, and are continuously embarrassing.

Though most likely these aren't "jokes", it's Trump running his mouth loudly and recklessly. Wasn't he just bragging about how he lied to Canada about our trade deficit? Jesus tap dancing Christ on a pogo stick, someone get that man a portable teleprompter.

Here's the last paragraph of that WH statement that I snipped in my OP:

But the president, delivering the story Wednesday evening, offered no indication that he was joking. He told donors that one American automaker had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to build a model car to test the Japanese regulatory barriers, only to be foiled by this specific test.

Doesn't sound like he was joking to me.

Oh, I don't buy for a second that he was "joking". It's just that they use that excuse so much, good lord. I think they just need to put it on an automated recording.

"The statement made by the President in an entirely non-joking manner and tried to be passed as a fact was actually a joke. The President didn't mean what he said when he purposefully stated it"

He was not joking about the Japanese bowling ball test. He was not joking about wanting to be President for life.

Exactly. Trump gets a bad case of diarrhea of the mouth and then wants us all to pretend its fine Swiss chocolate dribbling off his lips instead of the more foul substance it is.

Among the Trump "jokes" were

Trump was "just joking" about killing people in broad daylight and it not hurting his popularity

Trump was "just joking " when he invited the Russians into the election to help him and then they did just that

Trump was "just joking" about grabbing women by the vagina and how he could not help himself from doing it

Trump was "just joking" about peeping in on minors half undressed at beauty pageants because he had the power to do it since it was his pageant

Trump was "just joking" about punching protesters at his rallies and having them carried out on stretchers like the old days

Trump was "just joking" about congressmen being guilty of treason for not clapping loud enough reminiscent of the Soviet Union or Nazi Germany

Trump was “just joking” when he said that police should rough up arrested suspects instead of respecting their constitutional rights

Trump was “just joking: when he said he challenged Sec of State Rex Tillerson to an IQ test to show he was smarter

Trump was “just joking” he accused Obama of being a founder of ISIS

Trump was “just joking” when he suggested a Second Amendment solution to dealing with Hillary Clinton

and the latest being this stupid bowling ball in Japan "joke".

The guy seems to be one living breathing joke - and a bad one at that. Sadly, that is a joke on the American people.

I am not laughing. Plus Obama is actually funny.
