On Monday night, a dog died in a plane after a United Airlines flight attendant forced the dog into an overhead bin.Maggie Gremminger, a passenger on a flight from Houston to New York’s LaGuardia Airport, uploaded a photo of the dog’s owners on Twitter. “I want to help this woman and her daughter. They lost their dog because of an @united flight attendant. My heart is broken,” reads the image caption.
The Points Guy reports that during their flight, an attendant insisted that the woman put her dog, which was held in a TSA-approved pet carrier, in an overhead bin for the rest of the flight.
Passengers heard barking during the flight, but didn’t learn that the dog had died until the flight was over.

I'd be absolutely devastated.

That flight attendant better be fired. Today.

Rest in peace, poor doggy. This is devastating. Shame on United.

I'm going to withhold judgement for a moment here, my spidy senses are tingling that this story may be fake.

That dog does not look dead in that picture, it's holding its paw up and why would the dog die in the overhead bin anyway?

It's not as if there's no oxygen up there and that the temperature could possibly be low enough for it to freeze to death.

Blast me if I'm wrong.

I for one would love for this to be "FAKE NEWS" but as it stands, it's not. Sorry.

They seem to find it legit.

What picture, Jet?

It must have been one ruff flight

The op link has a pick of the dead dog, I wasn't going to post it. It made me sad.

Ah, the NY Post link? I didn't look closely at it (picture) but I just looked again. The dog appears to be in rigor mortis. It's only a puppy and it looks like a pug so both of those things combined would bring about early rigor. It's usually 3 hours after death.

The story is definitely real as some of my fellow animal rescue friends are on an email tear about it, and one of my friends works for United and she confirmed it's true.

So goddamn sad. Poor baby.

United may be up the creek on this one. While in general I am annoyed when people bring their pets on flights, I am pretty sure there is no rule that they are overhead baggage. Not sure what could have caused it's death in overhead vs. on the floor, but those waters for muddied as soon as they demanded the animal be put in overhead.

United is going to owe the price of that dog.

If you are traveling, don't bring your dog. Find some one to take care of them. If you are moving, there are better ways to move your pet than an airplane. Bringing a dog on an airplane is a bad idea. The flight attendant was in the wrong, but that does not make bringing your dog on the airplane any more forgivable. If you really have to fly the dog, they will fly them carefully in the cargo hold if you make the arrangement.

edit: removed last paragraph as I misread the article.

Why didn't anyone stop the flight attendant? Call another attendant over. If I was that pets owner I would have stood my ground before I put my pet in an overhead bin. Everyone on the plane just sat there and watched and did nothing! Sad.

I think that's horrible and United needs not only to fire the attendant but also to change any policies that might endanger animals on planes. I'd sue that airline -- and the attendant, personally -- for as much as I could get out of them. Then, I'd donate that money to animal shelters.

Except for Continental, the cargo holds are not always climate controlled, and animals have died during transportation.

If someone pays for their dog to fly in the passenger section of the plane, that's where the dog should fly -- with its owner.

I agree. Heartbreaking.

She brought the dog on as carry-on luggage. She did not pay for a seat for the dog. And her pet tote was blocking the isle, which is not something that can be allowed.

Didn't they say it was in a NSA-approved online carrier? I understand that it might have had to be moved, but I think the airline should have taken steps to keep it in the passenger section, even if they had to move the lady and her dog to a different seat -- to first class -- or to the attendant's area.

Where did you read that she didn't pay the United fee (which is $125 as I recall), and that the tote was blocking the aisle?

The dog appears to be in rigor mortis.

Not something I'd like to have learned today but that explains the picture, holy mother.

United is gonna have to do a bit more than refund some tickets in this case.

Gotta wonder how it died though, I must be underestimating the possibility of oxygen deprivation in that space, there's no way temperature could factor into it but yeah, probably suffocated.

There'll be hell to pay for this one as there should be.

No on this one, I really wish you were right. I can't blast an honest hope.

Yeah mate, well I hope the owners can get some hefty restitution from United, it won't completely make up for the loss but they need to pay for this.
