TOKYO — North Korea has vowed not to test missiles or nuclear weapons during proposed talks with the United States and South Korea, officials from South Korea said Tuesday after returning from surprisingly productive meetings in Pyongyang.

North Korea said it was prepared to hold “candid talks” with the United States about denuclearization and normalizing relations, and “made it clear” that it would not resume provocations while engaged in dialogue, the officials said upon returning to Seoul.
Kudos to Trump for bringing them to the table.
Now we wait and see what happens.
Or will this turn out like all the past agreements?

Do you really have to ask that? Even if one were to believe this is due to Trump (I don't), NK have NEVER kept their word on ANYTHING dealing with nuclear capabilities.

Don’t get your hopes up, guys.

Lack of confirmation.

Lack of specifics if North Korea will take anything less than undermining our alliance with South Korea and Japan or our position in the region.

In other news, Palestine has agreed to make Jerusalem the capital of Israel.

I dont see a petty (but dangerous) dictator ever giving up any of his power or leverage.

Why would he? What, specifically, would Un want that would come from giving up his nukes or reconciling with SK? Nothing with regards to benefiting his people, that's sure IMO.

I don't know about that. Trump has publicly done everything he can to push them away from the table.

This sounds more like North Korea just wanting to get past this latest episode in their nuclear drama. There is no sense in continuing to launch missiles into the Sea of Japan. And there is definitely no sense to disarmament. The best we could hope for is that North Korea agrees to not make intercontinental ballistic missiles that can strike the U.S.'s inner continent and to stop boasting about it. Of course, we need to also hope that Trump keeps his mouth shut and allows the process to get to a "conclusion" for this particular episode. You know, until later when they go ahead and present the world with their first intercontinental missile that can strike Idaho.

it's a 'dog & pony' show by Kim un ......... he is playing games & buying time ..........

it was America that broke the treaty with North Korea in 2005 and imposing more sanctions on North Korea after North Korea gave full access to nuclear sites to UN nuclear inspectors .... i just love the American revisionism in play re-writing history ... America and Bush are the reason why North Korea has nukes now ... you ripped up the treaty imposed more sanctions yet expected North Korea to still abide by the treaty .... utter hypocrites and you wonder why no one trusts America or it's word

IMHO sanctions did bring NK to the table.

Kim Jong-un had 2 priorities when assuming power aside from purges.
Make it impossible or extremely difficult to attack the Regime- Nukes gives him that.
Changing the economy allowing more free market as they have done with some farm production that began in 2012. If you recall at the end of the USSR they were doing the same thing and food production increases were substantial

Food supply- 2017 drought and flooding which has caused a massive shortage of food. Famine is a threat to stability within the Regime

For now it beats the hell out of giving NK a bloody nose.
I think NK is considering that Trump may order an attack on NK. If the US did, aside from causalities that could run into 10's millions, the Regime would fall.
And the Regime are survivors first and foremost.

China would be on board as they do not want nukes in SK, or Japan developing their own.

Recall the Cuban Missile crisis- US promised not to invade Cuba.
Do I think they will give up the nukes- No.
If they agreed to smaller numbers of Nukes that would entail invasive checks on any facility, by the US and UN thru NK.
Destroying all long range missile facilities and missiles. Again with invasive inspections, including destroying any chemical agents and delivery systems.
I realize that chemical weapons can be delivered by artillery.
Any inspections would need to be permanent to prevent any start of production.
Yes fissile grade materials can be easily hidden.

Do I think that will happen. No.
Do I think Trump will order a preemptive attack on NK. Better than 60-40 he will. Mattis and Tillerson have slowed McMaster from presenting a bloody nose plan to Trump.

Trump keep his mouth shut?

When has that ever happened?
