Republican Sen. Thad Cochran announced Monday he will resign from his post on April 1, amid health challenges, after serving 40 years in the U.S. Senate.

Cochran, R-Miss., who sits as the chairman of the influential Senate Appropriations Committee, said he would “formally retire” following the completion of the 2018 appropriations cycle.

“I regret my health has become an ongoing challenge,” Cochran said in a statement. “I intent to fulfill my responsibilities and commitments to the people of Mississippi and the Senate through the completion of the 2018 appropriations cycle, after which I will formally retire from the U.S. Senate.”

Cochran was first elected to the Senate in 1978, becoming the first Republican in more than 100 years to win a statewide election in Mississippi. He is the tenth-longest serving senator in U.S. history. Prior to joining the Senate, Cochran served three terms in the House of Representatives.

I actually like the Senator and wish him well. What will this mean for the GOP? He wasn't up for election this year. Special election? The other Republican Senator (Wicker) is defending his seat. Now they have to defend 2.

What I’m seeing is that Governor Bryant will appoint a placeholder until a special election in November. And that if no one gets 50% there will be a runoff. The sources I saw weren’t entirely sure though.

Yes, this is what the NY Times is saying:

Mr. Cochran’s retirement means that Gov. Phil Bryant, a Republican, will have 10 days to appoint an interim senator. A special election would then be held on Election Day in November to fill the rest of Mr. Cochran’s term.

Do you find the news of his retirement to be surprising? i know he had some health issues the last few years but I thought he'd stay out his term for the next 2 years.

Not all too shocking. He had missed significant time in the Senate recently.

Looking at this on a national level, I'm sure the GOP wishes this wasn't happening. They don't need to be defending too many of their seats.

I didn't mind him too much - he first ran for senator (to take over for James O. Eastland - who my grandmother used to sell moonshine for (no kidding)) when I was in high school...so that's a clue about how old I am, I guess. And when he said complimentary things about Strom Thurmond, I wasn't surprised - that's about par for the course for most whites in MS.

Very true. They’re heavily favored still for sure, but there’s a path to victory for Dems. AG Jim Hood has easily won statewide in GOP years and Brandon Presley has won a heavily Republican area. Meanwhile Chris McDaniel is the likely GOP nominee and he’s often considered to be a Sharon Angle/Todd Akin type who can blow a winnable seat.

Oh terrific. Just what we need - another "legitimate rape" type candidate.

There were stories floating around over the last several months about Cochran needing to retract his votes upon suggestion by his colleagues or being seemingly lost in the halls of Congress. Hope he does well in retirement.

MS is a very red state, but then again, so is AL.

I do not expect either seat to flip to be blue. However, I suspect that a lot more resources are going to have to be expended to keep them red than otherwise.. and from a national perspective, that might upset the apple cart a bit.

Normally I would agree with you, but the Republican party has completely lost all its "values" and control over the primary process. A deep south state full of evangelicals with a legacy of racism just might nominate another child molester or a Klansman. I'm not so sure that Roy Moore could win even in MS. You're right about resources though. The more the party and the media have to focus on "safe" seats, the less they can focus on competitive races.

Time for Young voters, Women Voters, African American Voters to step and break the chains of the GOP....Mississippi can be free at last, free at last

The next elections will be fascinating, not just in MS, but around the entire country. A lot of liberals skipped the presidential election because of Clinton. A lot of moderates voted for the current president because of Clinton. The GOP has no such advantage in 2018, although they do continue to talk about Clinton literally every hour. A lot of moderates have also grown dissatisfied with the president for obvious and multitudinous reasons. I'm not rooting for the Democrats as much as I'm hoping the president's foul existence finally bites him in the ass and costs him the Congress. I hope it's just before Mueller announces some serious charges against him. I hope that Pence faces so much outrage and pressure that he can't pardon him in order to run in 2020. Then I hope the president dies in a prison somewhere.

Nothing quite like compassionate liberalism.

Were you planning to make a point or just make an ignorant jab at my compassion as a liberal?

I just like point out when supposedly tolerant and loving liberals reveal their true intolerant and hateful selves

Me as well. I think the Senator is a good man. Like with any or all of them, I didn't agree with him 100% of the time, but I think he's honorable, and decent, and very smart. He represented the GOP well and served admirably. I hope he takes the time to get well and enjoys every moment of his retirement.

Can someone please tell Saladin4 that its the current year and not whatever fantasy land he seems to be lost in this month.

no big thing. Unless the GOP nominates another wacko, like Roy Moore or Aiken or a Mourdock, this is one of the safest seats in the senate. This is just a foot note on my house and senate forecast.

Please tell me there aren't two Roy Moores lurking about the GOP.
