Donald Trump has celebrated Xi Jinping’s bid to shepherd China back into an era of one-man dictatorship, joking (hopefully) the United States might one day “give that a shot”.

“He’s now president for life... and look, he was able to do that. I think it’s great. Maybe we’ll give that a shot some day,”

Forget about the joke for one second. Trump has just said that it's great that Xi was able to make a powergrab to become dictator for life. What the Hell??

Shouldn't the President be promoting democracy, not celebrating dictatorship?

Yeah Trump is crippled mentally, sometimes he just can't help himself; the idiocy gets the better of him.

Placating the stupidity of the white working class was worth letting a 71 year old entertain the prospect of being Sulla.

That's the problem...you and others WANT everyone to forget it was a JOKE.

This is what is so frustrating, and also does nothing to help your cause.

EVERYTHING is serious business, every comment, act, foible, whatever is treated as if 100% "serious" and "newsworthy" demonstrating how Satan (or Bozo the Clown) is sitting in the Oval Office.

How about you remember it WAS a joke, despite CNN's push to make it more than it is.

There are more than enough actual issues that even his supporters are becoming concerned about without this kind of over-the-top reaction muddying the waters.

Trump just loves to toy with people, this was fun for him, the more the literalists freak out and melt down the better....one day they will learn.

In this case I think he was just playing people. Which is still dumb and stupid and ridiculously lacks any semblance of presidential or American decorum. But it gets his Suckers to laugh and holster his 'member' yet again, so all is good.

This is not the sort of thing that should be joked about by the POTUS.

This is how Trump works: he tries to say controversial things on purpose, because he wants us to talk about this. If he wanted to stay on issues, he wouldn't tweet garbage constantly about celebrities he's having feuds with. Then of course, he pretends to be a victim and attacks the press for covering the distractions he created. Now here you are, carrying his water and trying to blame everyone else for actually wanting the words of the President of the United States to mean something rather than be a nausea inducing sideshow.

Not the worst we have heard, and unlikely to be the last time a POTUS makes a poor joke.

His comment about the US trying was a joke, but his comment about it being great that Xi was able to become President for life doesn't sound like a joke.

Does it matter, Trump is not likely to live a lot of more years no matter how many rounds of golf he gets in.

Well perhaps he should behave more diplomatically. He's the President and his words have consequences. His 'fun' is giving support and encouragement to an authoritarian dictator and other wannabe tyrants.

That is not his style....I wanted him to change it but he never has and probably wont, dictator/strong men are back in vogue the global elite having flubbed up affairs so badly.

It matters to the people of China who have just heard the President of the US welcome the fact that their brutal leader has just made himself President for life.

It's not his style to support and encourage democracy around the world?

Yes, people all over the world have had to hear the president of USA praising their brutal leaders that violates their freedom and rights.

You can also ask what the long-term consequences of Donald Trump will be. That if today is ok to have your supporters chant look her up about your political opponent, call the media enemy of the people and joke about USA might try one-man dictatorship someday. What will be ok for politicians to do and say tomorrow in USA?

That you already seen decline in democracy and press freedom and increase in corruption in countries their far-right leaders have come to power for example, Hungary and Poland.

Remember it was all about satire.

it's fair to point out that if Trump was a Democrat and advocated :

1. seizing guns without due process

and

2. a lifetime presidential term, even in jest

all within one week, impeachment proceedings would probably be underway by now.

Understood, as in jest being the most important term. If he were serious, even the staunchest of Trump supporters would quickly show their teeth. No doubt about it.
Until then, let us focus.

i have doubts, honestly. go read some of the due process threads. Trump supporters are apologizing for him in those threads, too.

You are confusing a few people behind the screen with citizenry. We don't even know if they are Trump supporters or merely pretend to be. So yeah, I take all this with a grain of salt.

i don't. my guess is that this asshole can do just about anything and his supporters will still vote for him. given that dynamic, comments like this are frightening.

the absurd has become found acceptable

it's almost as if our politics have been shaped by mad magazine

It's a "joke" only a President like Trump would tell. Is it funny? Is it even slightly humorous? Nope. Trump jokes are never funny. That's because they are not jokes. They are things he would like to be true. His audience at this joke didn't laugh. They cheered. You cheer at ideas you like.

That joke wasn't made in public, even though it was later leaked.

The unfortunate thing with Trump is that he's made a theme out of this, it's not just a one off or the occasional gaffe. If you assume he has any intelligence, he's either deliberately playing a heel for his Presidential reality show, or he's testing the waters to see what he can get away with. What else can you make of a leader that encourages violence against his political opponents, lies about his achievements, boasts about his followers fanatical support, and then "jokes" about being president for life?

"I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn't lose voters"
"We had a massive landslide victory, as you know, in the Electoral College" (actually bottom 10 electoral margins in history)
"If you see somebody getting ready to throw a tomato, knock the crap out of them, would you? Seriously, OK? Just knock the hell — I promise you, I will pay for the legal fees. I promise. I promise."
"I love the old days. You know what they used to do to guys like that when they were in a place like this? They'd be carried out on a stretcher, folks"
