"Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia is developing a new generation of advanced nuclear weapons including a hypersonic intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that can reach almost anywhere in the world and cannot be shot down by anti-missile systems.

Putin made the claim during his annual presidential address to the Federal Assembly in Moscow. He officially unveiled a new hypersonic nuclear-capable ICBM called the RS-28 Sarmat and said it would be able to strike anywhere in the U.S.—adding that testing of the weapon is now complete. Hypersonic? As in traveling faster than sound? All ICBMs are already hypersonic. You have to go that fast to reach a sub-orbital trajectory.

Don't know why this is such big news.....Hypersonic and High Hypersonic missiles are already in existence.

Supersonic; faster than the speed of sound.Hypersonic; many multiples ot the speed of sound and in this case 3500-4500 mph (speed of sound at sea level about 700mph). So fast that friction with atmosphere causes surface temperatures in excess of 2500 degrees. Different thatn a ballistic missile because they are steerable not following a pre-designated path like a big dart. China has also developed hypersonic craft also. The US has forced these Nations to develop by encroaching on Russian and Chinese borders with bases, miissliles, toadies (NATO), ships and aircraft and geosynchronous satellites with potentiallly offensive military capabilities. It all folllows the USA business plan, "War is good business, and business is good."/

I thought the same thing. If I recall correctly though there has been competition for high velocity missiles I think called a rammed air missile or something like that? Supposed to reach around mach 7 or so. Perhaps putin is trying to brag on achieving a break through on that tech? I dunno.

Hypersonic is generally the mach 5 and above level, with high hypersonic starting at mach 10....there are already ABM's that hit Mach 17, and at least one ICBM system reported to be around mach 25; anything above mach 25 is usually considered re-entry speed.

Im not an aerospace engineer, but my understanding is that those high end mach speeds are achieved much higher in the atmosphere where the air is much thinner and offers less resistance.

I also believe those are solid fuel rockets....RAM/SCRAM Jets simply will not function at ( mach 10 + )those speeds ( yet?)

Not so important supersonic missiles are or not supersonic. As I understand it, the main message was that the engines of these missiles work on nuclear fuel, which dramatically increases their effectiveness. Thus, these missiles are no longer ballistic, since they can make one turn around the Earth, and even several such turns before striking.

Honestly, I can hardly believe that all this is really true.

I wonder if Putin's weiner gained a few inches after this announcement.
