Florida school shooter’s AR-15 may have jammed, saving lives, report says

Nikolas Cruz’s semiautomatic rifle may have jammed during the massacre at a high school in Parkland earlier this month, according to Miami Herald news partner CBS4.
Cruz then dropped the AR-15 and fled with other students, CBS4 reporter Jim DeFede tweeted Tuesday afternoon, citing three sources familiar with the investigation. Cruz still had 150 rounds of ammunition — meaning many more people could have died had he been able to keep firing.

It also says he only had 10 round magazines. So all this crap about "He had high capacity magazines!" Was total crap.

Yep, he passed the NICS BGCs, used low capacity magazines, used a relatively small calibre rifle round but he did choose a really scary black rifle to fire them (extra super-duper rapidly) so that was, obviously, the "root cause".

Why is this crap even a topic? How many ways are there to say the same thing?
Listen. Peope are shooting whole crowds of other people, killing lots of them, Sometimes it's crowds of school kids being shot and killed. And here you guys are bickering about how the rifle looks.
Tell me this- what would solve the problem? I don't mean what's the first step in a damage-control program, I mean what's the silver bullit?

I have already stated what will get rid of the lion's share of gun crime. End the war on drugs and defund the inner city gangs. semi automatic rifles pale into insignificance when compared to inner city shootings and suicide with handguns. In fact rifles only make up 2% of gun crime. Hundreds of blacks are killed every few months, far more than 17 kids. The problem is even one is to much. We don't however have to strip us of our rights to make the kids safer.

#1 Well trained armed guards at schools like the Israelis use. It obviously works.
#2 Get rid of "Gun free zones." They are a magnet for killers looking for easy prey.
#3 End the war on drugs and legalize them. Strip the money from gangs. We know this works because of prohibition.
#4 Better reporting to the NICS system. Stop people from falling through the cracks.
#5 Law enforcement follow up on reports of threats.

All of these are real answers. Not cosmetic changes like the 94 ban. Or a band aid like outlawing bump stocks. And we don't have to ban anything. People are trying to address the tool and not the actual crime.

Bravo! End the war on drugs, and you solve about half of the gun crime right there. Supply drugs to addicts and you solve about half of the gun crime that;s left.
But what about the mass killings? That's what I want to know. Psycho killers running amok. There's nothing that can be done about psychos until they pull the trigger because of the constitution.
Your constitution is getting in the way.

Strange how you only saw one of five possible answers. Again rifles makeup 2%. I think if we implement some of my reforms, we would stop most of the gun crime. Will it stop all gun crime? Of course not. We also have a saying in the US...

Freedom ain't free. Everytime you get on the road to enjoy your freedom to move about the nation, you risk your life. In fact you have a greater chance of dying in a car accident or being shot by a police officer, than being killed by a gun wielding psycho.

An assault rifle is a select fire military weapon like the M4 or M16. An AR-15 is a civilian semi-automatic rifle, and only resembles the M4 or M16 as it is not select fire and cannot fire in burst mode or full auto.

So your statement is uninformed and completely disregards my post.

In other words... A waste of everyone's time.

I would tell them how sorry I am for their loss and apologies for the complete and utter failure of law enforcement to do their job in this case.

I would then point out you are wrong again...

Their is nothing an AR-16 can do that my Remmington 30-06 can't do and my 30-06 will do way more damage. Its just a semi automatic rifle. To ban the capabilities of guns like the AR-16 would mean to ban all semi automatic rifles. The only thing a assault riffle ban does is ban a semi automatic rifle that has a folding stock, pistol grip. Your so called weapons of war crap is another mans hunting rifle.

These countries haven't had to consider armed School Resource Officers or guns in schools. In Switzerland, gun ownership is very widespread but also training is mandatory.

I wish I owned an AR16.... ;)

There is a world of difference between the full sized much heavier recoiling thurty ought and the 'varmint' round 5.56. No one disputes the massive power of your rifle, but the 5.56 is MUCH easier to carry, it's ammo much easier to carry, and you don't need 'over-kill' to kill a human. Dead is dead. The school shooting would have been far less deadly if a 30/06 bolt rifle was used. So the paradox is the far more powerful full sized cartridge is actually less deadly in shoot and scoot, multiple fleeing targets in close quarter engagements.

It doesn't ban all semis- it bans those with DETACHABLE mags. As far as the AR platform being a hunting rifle- I'd opine some carpool with 500 hp cars and crawl through rush hour traffic... doesn't make either a smart move... :peace

By that standard a 22 pistol is more deadly then a 9mm?
I think im gonna need a example of a semi automatic rifle that doesnt have a detachable mag. For the life of me I cant think of one. I can only think of Bolt action or lever action but those arnt semi autos.

Shows how much bad information is out there. In a school shooting scenario his remington would have done far more damage. Carrying ammo would have not been much of an issue. The 30 06 is not much heavier than a .223. We are talking a matter of a couple of pounds for 100 rounds. The Ruger mini 30 fires a 7.62 x39 just like an AK 47. The weight of the ammo is negligible.

(milsurp) British Radway Green SS109 63gr .223 Weight per 100 rounds (lbs): 2.69
Remington UMC 150gr FMJ .208 (comparable to 30 06) Weight per 100 rounds (lbs): 5.25

A 2 and a half pound difference. up to 3 x30 round magazines.

So I don't think there is any paradox here at all.

More executions of gun murderers (all murderers, actually) and better security.

We've been throwing ideas out like it's Mardi Gras, but the anti-gunners won't hear anything that doesn't involve banning guns.

Many of those countries have experienced the worst genocides in human history, too. I'll go with keeping the 2nd Amendment in place.

I also think a ban on the media releasing the name of the shooter, or his image, might help. These shooters seem to crave notoriety, even posthumously. It's like they want to go down in history with their name linked to their horrific crime. Perhaps if the names were kept under wraps (probably impossible today with the internet), it would take that little thrill away from them.

I do think executions are in order, too.
